So that’s that and it’s Essex that has come on top with a win by three wickets and five balls to spare.
Gloucestershire put up to bat first, compiled a strong first innings total of 195-7 from 20 overs. Grant Roelofsen and Chris Dent struck a 61 run stand from 5.4 overs. Roelofson was dismissed for 29 (17) by Paul Walter, whereas, Miles Hammond also followed him back in the hut for 2 (4) as Simon Harmer got into the act.
Chris Dent couldn’t hang on for too long either as he walked back for 33 (23) with Matt Critchley getting the better of him. With the score being 80-4, Gloucestershire were in a spot of bother at one stage.
That’s when Jack Taylor and Ben Charlesworth came together to string a 77 run partnership to stabilize the innings. Jack Taylor’s 26 (28) and Charlesworth’s breezy 52 (20) were indeed the highlight of the first innings.
Marchant de Lange 17 (7)* and Danny Lamb 12 (7)* also tonked a few right towards the end. For Essex it was Paul Walter and Daniel Sams who were the standouts as they picked two wickets apiece.
As for the run chase, Adam Rossington was dismissed cheaply for 5 (4) after getting caught on a full-toss during Marchant de Lange’s over. However, Feroze Khushi and Robin Das made sure to maintain a positive intent as they struck a 40 run stand from just three overs while batting together.
Khushi struck a quickfire 34 (14) before getting dismissed to David Payne but Robin Das continued to take things forward for Essex. Das’ 69 (33) with 11 fours, two sixes and a strike rate of 209.09 indeed proved to be pivotal for his side in the grand scheme of things.
Matt Critchley 10 (11) and Paul Walter 15 (12) didn’t have much to offer as things got a bit tricky for a few overs in the middle. Nevertheless, Tom Westley and Daniel Sams 15 (8) contributed to a 30 run stand to give Essex the edge once again. Westley 31 (23)* made sure to stay there right till the end as he anchored his side to a deserved win.
For Golucestershire bowling unit it was Oliver Price who topped the charts with his spell of 2/23 from three overs. David Payne also managed to bag two wickets but conceded 34 runs in the process.
The Essex unit will be pleased with their performance as they ended up chasing an intimidating target in relatively comfortable manner.
