Match Details
12:40 PM IST, 6:10 PM Local Time - That’s that and it’s the Melbourne Stars that have secured the win by seven runs over the Perth Scorchers.
Batting first the Melbourne Stars compiled a first innings total of 154/7 from 20 overs of play.
Although the skipper Meg Lanning 5 (6) was sent back early by Alana King, the duo of Sophie Reid 25 (27) and Alice Capsey 31 (25) struck a 61 run partnership to add stability in the innings. Piepa Cleary managed to get the better of Capsey, whereas, Lilly Mills bagged two consecutive wickets of Reid and Maia Bouchier 0 (1) in the very next over.
Sophia Dunkley 8 (8) didn’t hang around much either as she was run out. That’s when the Melbourne Stars struck back as Annabel Sutherland 49 (27) and Nicole Faltum 22 (23)* struck a 71 run stand to bring their side back into the game.
Sutherland did most of the heavy lifting as she struck seven boundaries and a six, while batting at a strike rate of 181.48, meanwhile, Faltum played the role of an anchor as the Stars got to a fighting total.
For the Perth Scorchers, it was Sophie Devine who impressed with her spell of 2/21 from three overs.
As for the run chase, the Scorchers got off to an underwhelming start as they lost both Beth Mooney 9 (7) and Chloe Piparo 9 (12) for a total score of 21. It was Kim Garth who ended up dismissing Mooney, whereas Sophie Day sent Piparo back in the hut.
Sophie Devine 9 (14) turned out to be the second wicket for Day as Meg Lanning took a good diving catch to her right. Amy Jones too, couldn’t get going as she became the third victim for Sophie Dey.
Maddy Darke 45 (33) did show some fight out there in the middle and struck a quickfire knock, with six boundaries and a strike rate of 136.36 to her name. Just when Darke was looking dangerous it was Annabel Sutherland who chipped in with the big wicket in the 15th over.
Piepa Cleary’s 8 (10) wicket was the fourth for the day for Sophie Day as it seemed like the Stars were close to steam rolling the Scorchers with the score being 107-8 from 17.1 overs.
However, Alana King 21 (15)* and Taneale Peschel 12 (4)* made things interesting with a late onslaught. The duo struck 34 runs together from the final two overs but eventually fell short.
For the Scorchers, it was Sophie Dey who was the star of the show with her spell of 4/27 from four overs. Meanwhile, Annabel Sutherland and Alice Capsey also chipped in with two wickets apiece.
With that, the Perth Scorchers have secured a win after three straight losses, which should definitely add confidence in their camp as they head forward.
