8:15 PM IST | And with that, the Sunrisers Eastern Cape become the first team to clinch the title in the SA20 competition🏆. What a season they’ve had. They came into the final with some momentum and finished it on a high.
Despite chasing a low total, the Aiden Markram-led side made heavy weather of it. Temba Bavuma failed to get going once again and the Capitals got the early breakthrough. But it was the Adam Rossington storm that was on display in the Bull’s Ring.
The wicketkeeper batter was tremendous in his display and took apart the bowlers of the Capitals. Hermann anchored the innings from one end after the first wicket and the two batters glued a partnership of 67 runs. This was the indispensable partnership that breathed life into the chase. Wayne Parnell introduced Adil Rashid late today and it was the leggie that put the brakes. He dismantled Hermann and it opened the way for a quick collapse.
Aiden Markram played some flamboyant shots and paved the way to take it deep. Unfortunately, he fell out of partners and in the end got out. But the required rate wasn’t steep and Marco Jansen finished things off in a charismatic fashion.
Earlier, none of the Capital's batters could really get going. Phil Salt left the house early today. Kusal Mendis looked in good form, scoring 21 runs in a quick start. They were 56-2 after the powerplay and only if they knew that a collapse would follow. The spinners were the ones who turned the tables for the Cape. Van der Merwe returned with four wickets, while Markram had one.
In the end, a flurry of wickets followed and the Capitals could score just 135 runs.
