Player Bio

A promising all-rounder from New Zealand, Jimmy Neesham is one of those utility players who have made his presence felt in the international circuit with his all-round performances. Rising into prominence as a skillful all-rounder in the 2010 U 19 World Cup, Neesham started taking rapid strides at the international level. With a couple of years of making his first-class debut, Neesham was drafted into the national T20 team during the series against South Africa in 2012-13. He was awarded his maiden cap in the T20 format in Durban and made his ODI debut during the same tour in Paarl.

Starting off his professional career as a domestic cricketer or Auckland, Neesham shifted his base to Otago and was an instant success there. He made a sensational impact with both bat and the ball in the 50 overs format for the 2011-12 season. He had a decent run with the bat and also picked up career-best figures of 5-44 against Wellington.

He was the star performer for the Otago Volts in the 2013 Champions League and was instrumental in leading them to several victories in the group stages of the tournament. Over the years and ever since making his international debut, Neesham has been an impact player for the Kiwis and has impressed all and sundry with his all-round attributes.

On the back of consistent performances, Neesham made his Test debut against India in 2014 and smashed a sensational 137 in his debut which remains the highest score for a No 8 batsman in his Test debut. Quite naturally, an IPL contract was beckoning and he was bought by Delhi Daredevils in the 2014 edition of the IPL before moving to Kolkata Knight Riders.

There was a hue and cry among New Zealand cricket fans and experts when he was dropped from the 2015 World Cup which New Zealand lost to the Aussies in the final. He had a poor time with both bat and the ball during the series against India in 2016 but kept on playing some useful knocks and bagging some important wickets especially in the limited-overs format.

Neesham almost handed New Zealand their maiden World Cup win in 2019 when he smashed Jofra Archer out of the park during the super over in the final. Eventually, New Zealand lost by the barest of margins on the basis of boundary count. There is no doubt about the fact that Neesham is an impact all-rounder but he has a tendency to leak runs at important junctures of the game which makes him a risky option at times.
