That's it from Match 28 of WBBL 2022. We are halfway through the season as the Hurricanes climb up the table while the woes of the Renegades continue. Join us tomorrow for more WBBL and World Cup action from Australia as things are just heating up Down Under. For now, this is Ayan Chatterjee signing off on behalf of my esteemed co-commentator Anirudh Modi, alongside scorer/analyst Dushyant Madhukar Kumar. Stay safe, happy, and cool. Goodbye, and Take Care.
Maisy Gibson | Player of the Match: "I was trying to keep the stumps in play, as much as possible. The spin played a crucial role with especially the weather that has played out over the last week, we are happy to come away with the win. We are in control at home and we showed that today. Villani is amazing to have around and it's fantastic to play with her."
A commanding performance from the Hobart Hurricanes Women as they beat the Melbourne Renegades Women by 4 wickets with 11 balls to spare. The home team starts their campaign in front of the home ground with a win as they have outplayed their opponents in all facets of the game. Another demoralizing loss for the Renegades as the Hurricanes move up to 5th in the points table, while the Renegades stay at the bottom of the table with 2 points.

Chasing a modest target of 134 for the win, the Hurricanes got off to a solid start courtesy of their skipper Ellyse Villani and Lizelle Lee. Lee was the first one to be dismissed for 12 off 13 balls. Skipper Ellyse Villani looked to get back into form as she mustered 29 off 27 balls. Rachel Trenaman struggled for her 19 off 28 balls.

It was Heather Graham who held the innings together in a crucial stage of the game as she remained unbeaten on 39* off 26 balls and steered the side home. Ruth Johnston came and played a quickfire cameo of 15 off 6 balls. Naomi Stalenberg came and hit the winning runs as she finished with 6* off 3 balls. 10 extras were conceded by the Renegades bowlers as the victory was achieved in 18.1 overs.

For the Renegades' bowlers, A couple of wickets for skipper Sophie Molineux. A wicket apiece for Shabnim Ismail, Ella Hayward, Hayley Matthews, and Sarah Coyte. Hayward had excellent figures of 1/14 in 4 overs. Matthews had 1/22 in 4 overs. Ismail and Coyte were taken to the cleaners as the Renegades had 15-20 runs less to defend on this surface.

Earlier in the game, Melbourne Renegades Women put into first by the Hobart Hurricanes Women got off to a steady start courtesy of Hayley Matthews and Chamari Athapaththu as they put up 39 runs for the first wicket. Matthews was the first to go as she made 26 off 23 balls. The middle order fell away like a pack of cards. Courtney Webb scored 18 off 20 balls.

The innings was held together by the Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu as she carried her bat. She scored her second WBBL fifty and remained unbeaten on 75* off 59 balls as the Renegades got to a competitive 133/5 in 20 overs with the help of 5 extras given by the Hurricanes bowlers.

Maisy Gibson was the pick of the bowlers for the Hobart Hurricanes as she picked up 4/24 in 4 overs. The other wicket fell to Nicola Carey as she finished with 1/27 in 4 overs. The rest of the bowlers went wicketless but kept things tight to keep the score under 140. After the first 3-4 overs with the ball, they roared back into the contest thanks to Gibson as she was the star of the show today.

So, a win for the Hurricanes over the Renegades by 5 wickets with 11 balls left as they climb up to 5th in the points table. The Renegades stay at the bottom position in the points table.
