12:13 PM (IST), 5:43 PM (Local Time): So that’s that and it’s Sydney Thunder that have secured a comprehensive win by eight wickets and 15 balls to spare.
Batting first, the Melbourne Renegades compiled a first innings total of 147-5 from 20 overs. The skipper Hayley Matthews 8 (10) didn’t have much to offer as she was dismissed by Marizanne Kapp. Tammy Beaumont 23 (20), Josephine Dooley 15 (14), and Harmanpreet Kaur 11 (8) did manage to get starts but failed to convert them into something significant.
Chamari Athapathtu and Ebony Hosking made sure to keep things tight there in the middle for the Sydney Thunder. Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, the Renegades struck back as Courtney Webb 31 (30)* and Georgia Wareham 47 (34)* stringed a 78 run stand.
Wareham impressed the most with the bat as she struck seven fours in her innings while batting at a strike rate of 138.23, While Webb played the role of an anchor.
The likes of Marizanne Kapp, Chamari Athapaththu, Hannah Darlington and Ebony Hoskin all chipped in with a wicket apiece for Thunder.
As for the run chase, the Sydney Thunder opening duo of Tahila Wilson 28 (24) and Chamari Athapaththu 80 (54) were in the mood as they dominated the Melbourne Renegades bowlers for majority of the second innings.
Tahila Wilson struck some early boundaries in the first few overs but it was then the Athapaththu show as she smashed fours and sixes all over the park to give her side the edge. Both sets of openers contributed to a 99 run stand from 11.2 overs.
Georgia Wareham broke the partnership by getting the better of Wilson and then also managed to dismiss Chamira Athapaththu as she turned out to be the only wicket taker for the Renegades.
The Renegades failed to impose any kind of pressure as the Phoebe Litchfield 18 (14)* and Heather Knight 13 (13)* did the rest to finish off the game.
It was a poor display by Melbourne Renegades with the ball as all bowlers apart from Georgia Wareham conceded runs with an economy of over seven per over. That being said, the Sydney Thunder will be mighty pleased with their nearly perfect performance today.
