5:18 PM IST, 10:48 PM Local Time: That’s it. The Melbourne Renegades emerge victorious in this Melbourne Derby. A fitting farewell to one of Australian white-ball greats Aaron Finch as he bids adieu to professional cricket with a win. The Melbourne Renegades beat the Melbourne Stars by six wickets. This is only their second win of the Big Bash League 2023-24 and finish the home leg with a win. The Stars, meanwhile, will have to win their last game to qualify for the finals if the other results go their way.
Chasing 138, the Renegades got off to a shaky start. Aaron Finch, who was playing his final BBL game, departed on a three-ball duck. The ball was moving both ways and in walked Jake Fraser-McGurk who played positively right from the word go. Shaun Marsh took his time to settle in at the other end. Both made sure that they kept the Stars at bay in the middle overs.
Both Marsh and Fraser-McGurk played some beautiful strokes and brought up 50 between them. The Renegades were 74/1 at the end of 10 overs and they opted for Power Surge. Fraser-McGurk fell on 31-ball 42 in the 11th over. The Stars stormed back into the contest by dismissing Jordan Cox (4) and Will Sutherland 10) in quick succession.
Jonathan Wells joined Marsh who looked composed at the crease. He held the innings nicely from one end and showed his experience to bring up his fifty off 42 balls. He was well-supported by Wells from the other end as they made sure that there were no more hiccups in the chase. Marsh and Wells remained unbeaten on 64 and 14 respectively to take the Renegades home in the 18th over.
Earlier, the Stars were asked to bat first. They lost Daniel Lawrence (8) cheaply but Thomas Rogers (23) and Beau Webster looked solid at the crease. The Renegades bowled beautifully and didn’t allow any of the Stars batters to get away. Skipper Glenn Maxwell (20) played a cameo before falling in the eighth over. Marcus Stoinis also fell cheaply on two in his 100th BBL game.
Webster and Hilton Cartwright tried to resurrect the innings but the former departed on 29. The Stars kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Cartwright played a good knock of 38 to take the Stars to a competitive total of 137. It was a collective effort from the Renegades as each of their five bowlers picked up at least a scalp. Akeal Hosein and Kane Richardson picked up two each to restrict the Stars to a low total before their batters chased it down with six wickets in hand.
