So it’s the Birmingham Bears that have come out on top and secured a comfortable win by 21 runs over Northamptonshire.
Batting first the Birmingham Bears got to an intimidating first innings total of 202-6 from 20 overs. The opening duo of skipper Alex Davies and Rob Yates were in the groove as they compiled a 100 run stand for the first wicket from 10.1 overs.
Davies was the first wicket to depart for 46 (29) with five fours and a six to his name as Freddie Heldreich got into the act. Heldreich stepped in with another wicket off the very next delivery as he dismissed the dangerous Glenn Maxwell for a golden duck.
Nevertheless, Rob Yates went onto score some valuable runs as he got to a well made 71 (53) with eight fours and a six to his name. Just when Yates was looking to change gears, that’s when Josh Cobb took one of the catches of the tournament at the deep during David Willey’s over.
The onus was then on Sam Hain as he cruised to a fiery 48 (27)* while batting at a strike rate of 177.7 which eventually got the Bears to an above par score.
For Northamptonshire, it was Freddie Heldreich who stood out with his spell for 2/32 from four overs.
As for the run chase, Chris Lynn proved to be ineffective as he got dismissed for 7 (6) by Craig Miles, but his partner Ricardo Vasconcelos was on song tonight as he smashed his way through 65 (39). With the use of some quick hands, Vasconcelos fetched quite a few boundaries through the off-side which eventually got his strike rate to 166.66.
The specialist opener was dismissed by Miles as he skied one straight to David Briggs. The Northamptonshire captain David Willey did try to step in as well but was unable to get things going as he scored a jammy 33 (27) before getting sent back by Danny Briggs. The likes of Josh Cobb 7 (6) and Saif Zaib 14 (15) didn’t have much to offer as they were dismissed by Dan Mousley and Craig Miles respectively.
Lewis McManus did tonk a few as he got himself to 29 (14) but none of it proved to be enough as Northamptonshire were restricted to 181-6.
The Birmingham Bears had a near perfect evening as they scored ample runs, kept things tight with the ball and took some good catches on the field. Criag Miles was the star of the show as he bowled a spectacular spell of 4-29 from four overs. The likes of Glenn Maxwell, Danny Briggs and Dan Mousley also chipped in with a wicket apiece.
