That's it from the first eliminator match of the PSL 2023 here in Lahore. The Peshawar Zalmi will now face Lahore Qalandars tomorrow in the all-important Eliminator 2 for a spot in the finals. Hope you have enjoyed all the action here at our network. For now, this is me Megh Mandaliya signing it off along with my co-commentator Saipavan Janaki alongside our scorer Manish Bishnoi. Stay tuned for more coverage going on in our network, take care, stay safe, and enjoy!!!!🙌🙌🙌
Babar Azam (Peshawar Zalmi Captain): "Yes, the way the fast executed the plans was fantastic. We did leak some runs at the start but we managed to pull things back really well. The ball also started to reverse and the bowlers made the most of it. The way we started the innings, 200 was always on the board. But we didn't finish well and we were around 20 runs short. In the second innings, the was not coming nicely onto the bat and the bowlers again adjusted their lengths perfectly. We will try to work on some areas and rectify our mistakes."
Aamer Jamal (Player of the match): "We tried to back our skills at the backend. Shaun Tait once told me fast bowling is all about attitude and I tried to focus on that today. The game was slipping away from us, but I always had the belief to execute the yorker at the backend. I and Irshad had clarity in our bowling and Babar also backed us."
Time for the presentation ceremony...
Shadab Khan (Islamabad United Captain): "We did not hold particularly well in the first 10 overs. We did not play bad cricket and credit goes to Zalmi bowlers. They executed the yorkers really well in the death overs. We were in control for most of the game, but that's cricket. Sometimes you lose and sometimes you win. Our body language was also not pretty good in the opening stages. Grateful that we qualified but we failed to play smart cricket in some matches and the same goes in today's match."
Salman Irshad: "I tried to stick with my basics. You can execute yorker on any wicket and any conditions and that's what I tried to do in the middle. Babar was telling us to grab a couple of wickets and we did exactly the same. Azam Khan's wicket was the turning point in the game. I always wanted to play under Babar's captaincy and do well."
11: 05 PM IST | That’s it! In what was a rollercoaster of a knockout game, Peshawar Zalmi held their nerves to advance to Eliminator 2. Zalmi continues the trend of defending a total here at the Gaddafi Stadium and they have defeated United by only 12 runs in a close-fought encounter. The Babar Azam-led side will now face Lahore Qalandars in Eliminator 2 tomorrow.

In pursuit of a competitive total of 184, Rahmanullah Gurbaz started the innings on a fiery note and went after his countryman Mujeeb Ur Rahman in the first over. However, his stay was soon ended by Azmatullah Omarzai as the right-hander Gurbaz returned for 10(7). Sohaib Maqsood, the next batter in, then joined forces with English batter Hales and resurrected the innings after an early wicket.

The right-handed duo stepped on the gas straightaway and gained momentum for United. Hales was the primary aggressor in the partnership and cruised United to 67/1 after the powerplay while Maqsood also kept on moving the scorecard. Both the batters completed their half-centuries and just when they were completely taking the game away from Zalmi, Aamer Jamal cleaned up Maqsood 60(48) and ceased the 115-run partnership between the duo.

Following Maqsood’s wicket, the Zalmi bowlers were excellent to dry up the runs as both Azam Khan and Hales strived to middle the ball. The right-hander Azam eventually succumbed to building pressure and he was cleaned up by Salman Irshad. That was soon followed by the massive wicket of Alex Hales 57(37) as Aamer Jamal gets rid of him with an excellent yorker to level the contest.

After the departure of Hales, the wickets kept tumbling for United and a fantastic display of death bowling by Jamal and Irshad handed Zalmi a place in Eliminator 2. Both Irshad and Jamal claimed a couple of wickets while Omarzai also extracted a breakthrough.

Earlier in the day, after being invited to bat, Saim Ayub attained some streaky boundaries in the first over before Babar Azam went all guns blazing in the following over. Both the batters kept striking the ball inside the powerplay and kept the scorecard moving at a swift rate. The left-right duo kept toying with the bowlers in the field restrictions before Mohammad Wasim Jr dismissed Saim Ayub 23(16).

Nonetheless, skipper Babar Azam kept attacking the bowlers and cruised Peshawar to 77/1 after the end of the powerplay. Haseebullah Khan, the next batter in, played some good strokes before Shadab Khan outwitted the left-hander for 15(11). Mohammad Haris also swatted the bowlers all around the park and notched up a quick 34(17) before Hasan Ali dismissed him.

Following Haris’ wicket, Peshawar suffered a mini-collapse and drifted away from the course but eventually, it was Azmatullah Omarzai’s cameo of 10(6) that took Zalmi past 180. Skipper Shadab Khan was the pick of the bowlers for United and the leg spinner bagged two crucial wickets despite leaking few runs. Stick around for the post-match presentation!
