BBL | Qualifier: Perth make easy work of Sixers, march to summit clash second year in a row
Led by a brilliant bowling attack and a blistering knock from opener Josh Inglis, Pert Scorchers reached the summit clash of Big Bash League 2021-22. They defeated Sydney Sixers in a repeat of the last season’s Qualifier where they were defeated by the Sixers. However, they were still able to make it to the final. Hence it would be interesting to see if it becomes a repeat even in the final as Sixers would now face the winner of the Knockout in the Challenger on January 26 in a bid to qualify for the final. In the Qualifier though, the Sixers were almost no match to the Scorchers who got off to a flyer with the bat after winning the toss and deciding to bat first at the Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The opening pair of Kurtis Patterson and Inglis added 120 for the first wicket in the first 12 overs only. From there on 200 was looking like a sure shot possibility, but the Sixers pulled back a bit. While Patterson got out for 64, Inglis went on to make 79 and was helped by Mitchell Marsh’s 28 to propel the team to 189-3 at the end of the 20 overs. With the ball in the hand, the Scorchers bowlers became lethal and remove the first seven batters of the Sixers for a paltry score of 51 runs. The Sixers in fact might have become a matter of ridicule if not for the brilliant face-saving knock of 66 which came in only 29 balls by bowler Ben Dwarshuis. The left hardener partnered with fellow pace bowler Hayden Kerr and added 41 for the eight-wicket before going on to add another 42 with last man Steve O'Keefe. The Sixers innings eventually ended with the team score at 140 in the 20th over. Apart from Dwarshuis, Kerr and skipper Moises Henriques, no other batter from the team in pink was able to get into double figures. For Scorchers, Jhye Richardson, Ashton Agar, Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye picked two wickets each while one wicket ent to leg spinner Peter Hatzoglou and Sean Abbott got run out. Sixers will now wait for the winner of the Knockout between Sydney Thunder and Adelaide Strikers to face in the Challenger. The winner of the Challenger will face Scorchers in the final on January 28.
BBL 11 | Covid-depleted Stars thrashed by Scorchers
With their 10 players having tested Covid positive, Melbourne Stars and its captain Glenn Maxwell didn’t really have much of a choice to field a playing xi. It was always going to be a tough battle for a below-par Stars side against Perth Scorchers one of the top-notch sides in the league. It turned out to be the same as they were thrashed by 50 runs to suffer their fourth loss of the tournament. The chase of 180 was started in great fashion by Stars openers Joe Clarke and Tom Rogers as they added 78 for the first wicket in only 51 balls. However as both of them fell in consecutive overs, it was difficult for the rest of the batters to keep up with the asking rate especially as Maxwell failed to make any significant contribution with the bat. Apart from Clarke’s 52 and Rogers’ 32, only Charlie Wakim and Hilton Cartwright could get into the double figures as the entire team got all out for 130 in the 19th over. For Scorchers, Tymal Mills, Andrew Tye and Peter Hatzoglou picked three, two and two wickets respectively. Leg spinner Hatzoglou was given the Player of the Match award for picking two crucial wickets of Maxwell and well set Rogers. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and choosing to bat first at the Junction Oval, Melbourne, Scorchers didn’t really have a good start as they lost Cameron Bancroft early on in the innings. However, two in-form batters in Colin Munro and Kurtis Patterson paired up to add 68 runs for the second wicket. While Munro was dismissed for 40 off just 20 balls, Patterson completed his fifty, scoring 54 off 39 balls. However, post that they lost quick wickets until skipper Ashton Turner scored 27 off 19 balls and Ashton Agar made 19 off 16 balls to take Scorchers to 180-8 in their 20 overs. With this win, the Scorchers have now reached the top of the table having accumulated seven wins out of eight games. They are 2.5 points ahead of second-placed Sydney Sixers.
BBL 11 | Kurtis Patterson, Ashton Agar shine in Perth Scorchers dominating win over Hurricanes
In their last two meetings, Perth Scorchers have literally muscled their way past Hobart Hurricanes to climb to the top of the Big Bash League’s points table. In their recent meeting which took place on December 20, Monday, the Scorchers beat Hurricanes by a huge margin of 42 runs. Kurtis Patterson and Ashton Agar were the heroes for Scorchers as Patterson scored a brilliant fifty with the bat while Agar scored a quick thirty and also picked two crucial wickets. Chasing a target of 168, the Hurricanes didn’t get a good enough start as any of its top batters were able to get a flying start and could not convert their slow starts into a big score either and by the end of the first half of their innings, the men in purple were reeling under pressure at 58-5. Soon they were reduced to 83-8. But, before they could be bowled out for under 100, Wil Parker, who came to bat number 10 and was the top scorer for the Hurricanes with his efforts of unbeaten 25, managed to provide some respectability to the dwindling scorecard. Apart from Parker, Nathan Ellis scored 20 off 15 balls as Hurricanes reached 125-9 at the end of their 20 overs. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first at the Optus Stadium in Perth, the Scorchers had a very troublesome start as they lost Josh Inglis in the very first over. However, Patterson was on a roll and had a 71 run stand with Micthell Marsh in which Marsh could score only 21 runs. Even as Marsh got out, the 28-year-old carried on, scoring 78 off just 48 balls. He hit six fours and five sixes before being eventually trapped by Jordan Thompson. Agar, who came to bat at number seven was the second-highest run-scorer with 30 unbeaten off just 11 balls, hitting three fours and two sixes to take his team past 150 and eventually to 167.
