Mumbai Indians Rope In Kerala Pacer To Replace Jasprit Bumrah in IPL 2023
In a significant development, Mumbai Indians have drafted Kerala seamer Sandeep Warrier into their squad ahead of the IPL 2023.
SL vs IND | Sandeep Warrier makes T20I debut as India bat first in series decider
India have called upon yet another debutant of the T20 series decider against Sri Lanka and replaced Navdeep Saini, who did not get to bowl a single over in the last game with Sandeep Warrier, a pacer from Kerala. Warrier plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League and is rated highly for the extra bounce he extracts off the surface. Saini had injured his hand while fielding at the cover position in the death overs of Sri Lanka’s chasing efforts. This will be the first occasion for Warrier at the international level and he was travelling with the squad just as net bowlers. India skipper Shikhar Dhawan won the toss and elected to bat first in the final game of the tour. The decision could well have been taken in the dressing room looking at the nature of the pitch in the last game where balls were holding up in the surface and spinners were turning the ball from good parts of the surface. The series is level at 1-1 and the onus will be on India to win the game and the series as they had come on the tour with big promises and flamboyance. However, to be fair to them, the Covid-19 crisis in the camp that ruled as many as nine players out of the last two games of the series depleted their chances massively.
IPL 2021: WTC stand-by Prasidh Krishna becomes 4th KKR player to test Covid-19 positive
Kolkata knight Rider pacer Prasidh Krishna has tested positive for Covid-19. The pacer was picked as a stand-by for India’s World Test Championship Final squad on Friday, May 7. With this, KKR now have four players from the IPL 2021 camp who have tested positive. Earlier today, new Zealand batsman was the third KKR player to test positive after Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier. “He is down with Covid-19, the results have come in and he tested positive,” a source close to the development was quoted as saying to ANI. Krishna, 25, clocked great pace during the IPL and was considered as one of the bright prospects for India’s England tour, although he was not picked in the main squad. The Karnataka pacer picked eight wickets in seven games before IPL was suspended due to rising Covid-19 cases in the Bio-bubble. He has so far represented India in three ODIs. While Warrier and Chakravarthy are undergoing treatment, Seifert was supposed to return back home on one of two charter flights back to New Zealand. Since he has tested positive, the New Zealand Cricket is in touch with him and his family and the player is being transported to Chennai from Ahmedabad. Over there he will undergo treatment at the same private hospital as Chennai Super Kings' Assistant Coach Michael Hussey.
IPL 2021: New Zealand Cricket promises full support after KKR’s Tim Seifert tests positive for Covid-19
New Zealand and Kolkata Knight Riders’ Tim Seifert has tested positive for the Covid-19. After Sandeep Warrier and Varun Chakravarthy, Seifert is the third player in the Kolkata based franchise’ IPL camp to test positive for the virus. New Zealand Cricket, the governing body of cricket in the Kiwi nation, has promised full support to Siefert and his family during the testing times. “It’s really unfortunate for Tim and we’ll do everything for him that we can from this end, and hopefully he will be able to test negative, and be cleared and approved for discharge as soon as he’s well again,” NZC chief executive David White said to the official Blackcaps website. The wicket-keeper batsman was bound to return to his home one of the two New Zealand bound charter flights arranged by the IPL Governing Council and BCCI. Now that he has tested positive, the 26-year-old would rather be transported to Chennai where he would be treated in the same private hospital as former Australia international and Chennai Super Kings’ assistant coach Michael Hussey. The Whanganui born player failed both his pre-departure RT-PCR tests and is said to be experiencing moderate symptoms. White, the NZC chief further said that they are in contact with both Siefert and his family and hope that he would get well soon to return back home. “Since receiving the news, we’ve organised support for Tim and have also – via the players association, been in contact with his family to ensure they’re kept fully informed and updated on developments,” he said. According to NZC, Kiwi players who are part of the World Test Championship squad, including skipper Kane Williamson, Kyle Jamieson, Trent Boult and Mitchell Santner along with one physio would be moved to Maldive from New Delhi and from there they will catch their England bound flight.
IPL Chairman Brijesh Patel confirms; BCCI seeking window around ICC World T20 to complete IPL 2021
Amid increasing uncertainty over the fate of the 14th edition of the Indian Premier League that was cut short due to rising number of Covid-19 cases across multiple franchises, IPL governing council chairman Brijesh Patel has said that the tournament will be resumed from where it was left and during a window period before or after the ICC World T20 scheduled for later this year. “The remaining 31 matches will be completed whenever we can. So, matches will resume from where we left this year. We have to look at a window, before the ICC T20 World Cup or after the World Cup (October-November 2021),” Brijesh Patel said in an interview with News 18. He also added that the BCCI and IPL governing council first thought of rescheduling some matches of the sides that were affected by the Covid-19 cases in their camps. However, he added that once it spread across to as many as four franchises, the option of rescheduling matches became untenable and the BCCI had to take a tough call on suspending the league. Reportedly, the BCCI is set to lose approximately Rs 2,000 crore after a suspended edition of the IPL and hence it is likely that the board will be willing to find a window to complete its cash cow.
IPL 2021 | Michael Hussey tests Covid-19 positive, to face uncertainty over going back home
A day after the bowling coach Lakshmipathy Balaji tested positive for the novel coronavirus, batting coach Mike Hussey has also tested positive. The development came in the backdrop of the IPL governing council suspending this year’s edition for an indefinite period. "Hussey was tested and his sample came positive. We sent it for retesting but that has also come positive," PTI quoted an unnamed IPL source. Hussey testing positive for Covid-19 will most likely complicate his return to Australia where the federal government has imposed restrictions on people including players coming from India that is hit severely by the Covid-19 pandemic. Other players, support staffs and commentators are reportedly looking to spend their time in the Maldives in order to be eligible for getting entry to their homeland. But, Mike Hussey might well have to go through a tougher route. The 14th edition of the IPL was on its way till the halfway stage before cores of Covid-19 cases struck teams. First, cases were reported from the Kolkata Knight Riders camp then the Chennai Super Kings along with the Sunrisers Hyderabad and the Delhi Capitals. Initially, the BCCI and the IPL governing council started with rescheduling the matches one after another before finally giving up on this season and avised all stakeholders to go back to their homes and spend time with their families.
IPL 2021 | Tournament to continue as of now, KKR squad in hard quarantine for five days
The 14th edition of the Indian Premier League will continue as of now with the defending champions Mumbai Indians locking horns against the Sunrisers Hyderabad at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Tuesday (3 May). The development comes after two KKR players Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier tested positive for COVID-19. Meanwhile, three staff members of CSK which includes Lakshmipathi Balaji, the CEO of the franchise and a bus driver has also tested positive for the novel Coronavirus. However, their result in the rapid antigen test turned negative which makes the situation a little dicier. In a recent podcast by Boria Majumder, he clarified the fact that there was no bubble breach as far as the Kolkata Knight Riders are concerned and will be under hard quarantine for the next five days and if all the tests come out negative then only the match against RCB might be rescheduled on 7th May. Hard quarantine means none of the KKR players can go outside their rooms and will be served food in disposable cutleries which will be placed outside their respective rooms. As far as CSK is concerned, the situation can go out of control if the RT-PCR tests of the three aforementioned members come out positive. Balaji was present in the dugout and if his RT-PCR test comes out positive, it means that he might have exposed the virus to quite a few. However, if the results come out negative, the situation should be under control as told by Boria Majumder in his podcast. He also added the fact that none of the groundstaff members who were there yesterday for the match duties has tested positive after several media outlets reported that five to seven DDCA groundsmen who were present for match duties yesterday have tested positive.
#CancelIPL trends on Twitter after 2 KKR players and 3 CSK staff test positive for COVID
The ongoing edition of the Indian Premier League was jolted severely after two members of the Kolkata Knight Riders squad tested positive for COVID-19. It is learnt that Varun Chakravarthy and Sandeep Warrier contracted the virus after going for a test in a hospital nearby. Though their first report came out negative, both the players tested positive in their next tests. Both players have quarantined themselves and the scheduled match between Kolkata Knight Riders and the Royal Challengers Bangalore for today has been postponed. Meanwhile, it must also be noted that three CSK members are also found to be COVID positive including the CEO and Lakshmipathy Balaji. With quite a few players already leaving midway through the tournament, IPL’s recent future remains in jeopardy. Players like Ravichandran Ashwin, Adam Zampa, Kane Richardson, Andrew Tye and Liam Livingstone had left the IPL midway. Meanwhile, umpire Nitin Menon also withdrew his name after his family members tested positive. The ultimate decision will be taken by the BCCI and it remains to see what fate has in store for the remainder of the IPL this season. Amidst the chaotic situation, Twitterati has gone wild demanding a cancellation of the ongoing IPL. Few people felt that while IPL at these tumultuous times was giving some entertainment to the people of India, it is not a good idea to continue the tournament especially after positive cases coming out from the bio-bubble.
IPL 2021: Now a Knight Rider, Sandeep Warrier recalls Virat Kohli's role in his IPL journey
Sandeep Warrier was one of the emerging pacers during the 2012-13 edition of the Ranji Trophy when the big opportunity of the Indian Premier League came knocking his door. The offer came directly from the recommendation of Virat Kohli—who was rising with every game and were to lead the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the next edition of the league in 2013. Looking back at his IPL journey, Warrier recalls how he received a call from the Royal Challengers Bangalore management right after he bowled against Indian batsmen such as Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja. “When I came back from the Ranji trophy, MA Satish sir was the manager of the Indian team that time and India had a One Day match against England in Kochi. He asked me whether I can come to bowl in the nets in Kochi. I went to bowl in the nets. I bowled to Rohit bhai (Rohit Sharma) and Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja). So, that’s how Virat saw me that time he told RCB management that day itself and I got the call from Avinash sir (AvinashVaidya, RCB team manager), that we are interested in signing you,” Warrier recalls his journey to the cash-rich league in a video posted by KKR on its YouTube channel. He recalls that Virat Kohli did not bat against him in the nets before an ODI against England in 2013, but his exploits against other batsmen were good enough for him to recommend his name to the RCB management. Warrier was only 21-year-old in 2013 when RCB handed him a contract for one year. However, he could not feature in their playing XI and had to wait for a long time to make his debut that came only in the 2019 edition of the Indian Premier League. Warrier is a vital cog for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the upcoming edition of the IPL starting April 9 as he forms a formidable group of Indian pacers who will partner Pat Cummins to dismantle opposition batting line ups.
