T20 World Cup | Clinical Pakistan breeze past Scotland, enter semis as the only unbeaten side

It was all hunky-dory for Pakistan as they nailed an expected victory against Scotland on Sunday night at Sharjah. They won their last game of the Super 12 to end up as the only unbeaten side in this edition of the T20 World Cup. They would now enter the semi-finals having won all their games and face Australia in the second semis at Dubai International Cricket Stadium on November 11. Chasing a target of 190 was never going to be easy for the Scots. The challenge for them never looked like chasing 190, it was always about showing better application with the bat against one of the best bowling attacks in the tournament. But they failed to do that and apart from Richie Berrington, who scored his first fifty in this edition of the World Cup, and to an extent George Munsey, no other batter was able to stay there for long. At the end of the 20 overs, the team in purple could only reach 117 with Berrington remaining unbeaten on 54 off 37 balls. They lost the game by a huge margin of 72 runs. For Pakistan, Shadab Khan picked two wickets while Haris Rauf, Hasan Ali and Shaheen Afridi picked one each. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss, Pakistan decided to bat first - making it twice in a row that they chose to take up the challenge of batting without the dew factor. The reasoning behind the decision making was to test themselves in situations that would be unfavourable to them and would have to set a total for the opposition team who would be batting in far better conditions. The opening partnership was once again steady as usual, but Pakistan were once again slow to get off the rails. They were 35 for no loss at the end of the powerplay with Mohammad Rizwan batting at 15 off 18 balls and captain Babar Azam striking almost at 100 SR with 17 off 18 balls to his name. The Pakistan keeper, who has been having a stellar tournament got out on the first ball outside the powerplay but that did not halt the scoring rate of the team. Babar Azam continued his good run and hit the fourth fifty in his fifth game of the tournament, a record held only by three players in the world. But it was the innings of Shoaib Malik that changed the course of the game as he hit an 18-ball fifty, the fastest for any Pakistani in T20I cricket. Thanks to his fifty, Pakistan scored 65 in the last four overs to reach 189 in their 20 overs. Scotland remained winless in the Super 12 stage even though they won three out of three in the first round of the tournament to make it to the Super 12. Speaking at the post-match presentation, Pakistan skipper Babar Azam was confident about his team’s chances in the semi-final at Dubai against Australia. He said, “We have confidence and belief in the team-mates. We are playing as a team and hence playing consistent cricket. We would want to continue with the same momentum.” On other hand, Kyle Coetzer, the Scottish skipper was happy to have been able to inspire a few people back home to pick the game and make the country progress even more. “It's a huge occasion for an associate team to play in the World Cup. Hope we have inspired a few people. There is plenty of room for growth and I am sure these guys have learnt a lot,” he said.

T20 World Cup | NZ vs SCO Preview: Kiwis look to fly high against depleted Scotland

New Zealand will have a great opportunity to build on the momentum as they take on a depleted Scotland on Wednesday in Dubai. The Blackcaps are coming into this game on the back of a sensational bowling performance against India. The Kiwis bowling unit was on song and thoroughly dominated a formidable Indian batting order to restrict them to 110/7 in 20 overs. Scotland on the other side, have struggled in the Super 12 stage and have lost both the matches that they have played so far. Moreover, it’s been their batting order that has struggled. In the previous clash against Namibia, the top-order just got dismantled like a pack of cards and it was Ruben Trumpelmann, a left-arm pacer who scalped three in the first over. New Zealand have Trent Boult, a much more experienced lad. While for the Kane Williamson-led side, it would be a chance to continue form, Scotland have an uphill task of getting themselves back on track. Match Details New Zealand vs Scotland, Match 32, Super 12 Group 2 Venue: Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai Date & Time: 3rd November at 3:30 PM IST and 2:00 PM Local Time Live Streaming: Star Sports Network and Disney+Hotstar Pitch Report The teams batting second have had the edge at the venue. The seamers will have something on offer from the track and can play a prominent role in dominating the opposition. So, if you win the toss, field first. Trent Boult: A cause of concern for Scotland New Zealand pacer Trent Boult is one bowler who can create some problems for the top order. The Scotland batting unit went haywire after Trumpelmann unleashed that bowling performance in the first over. The horrors of that particular over would still be afresh in Scotland batters’ mind and it would be very important for them to negotiate that. New Zealand’s opening stand The Blackcaps have a chance to fine tune that one issue which they have faced in the first two matches and that is the opening stand. Martin Guptill and Daryl Mitchell have given steady starts to the side but they now need to capitalise on that. The two batsmen put 36 against Pakistan and 24 vs India respectively for the first wicket. The team management would now want them to put some more runs on the board to provide the team with a solid foundation. Kiwis’ strong batting order The New Zealand side has one of the most stable batting unit. While Guptill and Mitchell can provide them with steady starts, Williamson has his work cut out to stay as long as he can at the crease. Apart from him Conway’s ability with the bat is known to everyone. Probable XI New Zealand: Martin Guptill, Daryl Mitchell, Kane Williamson (c), Devon Conway (wk), Jimmy Neesham, Glenn Phillips, Mitchell Santner, Adam Milne, Tim Southee, Ish Sodhi, Trent Boult Scotland: George Munsey, Kyle Coetzer (c), Matthew Cross (wk), Richie Berrington, Calum Macleod, Michael Leask, Chris Greaves, Mark Watt, Josh Davey, Safyaan Sharif, Brad Wheal CE Fantasy XI Devon Conway, Martin Guptill, Kane Williamson (VC), George Munsey, Calum Macleod, Richie Berrington, Mitchell Santner, Daryl Mitchell, Trent Boult, Ish Sodhi (C), Mark Watt

T20 World Cup | AFG vs SCO: Mohammad Nabi and co. need to yard out Scotland to begin their campaign

T20 World Cup | AFG vs SCO: Mohammad Nabi and co. need to yard out Scotland to begin their campaign

It’s yet another World Cup and once again Afghanistan team is in contention, not for making it to the semi-finals but at least upsetting one or two against and making their road difficult for them to reach the semi-finals. That road would however have to be travelled through by meaning out the so-called easy challenges, the first of which is in the form of Scotland. But it would be no easy challenge by any means, to say the least. Different routes to the Super 12 Leading up to the World Cup, the last few months haven’t been easy for the Afghanistan team. The regime change in their country meant that its coaches Lance Klusener, Shaun Tait and recently inducted Andy Flower were not in contact with the entire team for quite some time. Hence the time together that the team has spent with all its staff is even less than a month. But even after that, the kind of form that the Afghan side has shown in the warm-up games has been amazing. They beat defending champions West Indies outrightly and gave a tough time to South Africa too. On the other hand, Scotland, which is not a permanent member of the ICC, has done exceedingly well coming into the Super 12. They beat Bangladesh in their first match and then kept their composure to win against Oman and Papua New Guinea to get through to the next round for the first time in their history. Even their preparation coming into the World Cup as they won three out of four games before the tournament which included two warm-up games, but all those matches were against Associate nations. Thus taking them lightly would be no good to Afghanistan at all. What's at stake? For Afghanistan, this is a game that could very well shape their campaign. With Pakistan beating India comprehensively in their first match, Afghanistan wouldn’t have it easy in their second game against the neighbours. Hence if they lose even their first game, they would be very low on confidence going into the big game. For Scotland, it is an occasion to show their skills and what they are made up of. If they win this one and can get one past Namibia, then not only would they give a better account of themselves, but could also bring in a lot of funding to their game. Now that they already have an ODI status, and with ICC already having 13 teams in the ICC Super League, they might as well make their case for a 14 team Super League and get more chances at the bigger stage. Afghanistan vs Scotland: Match Details Match Number - 17 Date and Time: October 25, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 06:00 pm Local, 2:00 pm GMT Venue: Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah Broadcast and Livestream: Star Sports and Hotstar Pitch Report The wicket at Sharjah in the last game played well as even a total beyond 170 was chased by Sri Lanka against Bangladesh which had a formidable bowling attack. Agreed that the Bangladeshi team made a lot of errors and dropped crucial catches, but still, the wicket was better than before for stroke-making and hence Scottish players, if they can apply themselves a bit better, could pose a decent enough challenge for the Afghans. Weather Forecast The temperatures in the evening are going to remain in between the higher twenties to mid-thirties throughout the game. Humidity will be low, below 45 and hence not much sweating for the players as compared to the recently concluded IPL. This would also mean that there would be dew as the evening approaches night. Thus the best bet in such conditions would be to win the toss and bowl first, give your spinners a chance to use the wicket first and try and extract some help. Chasing would be easy as the ball would skid along. Team News Afghanistan The Afghan side would be chummed with its last warm-up game and would like to get a smooth combination going with PSL star Hazratullah Zazai and in form Mohammad Shahzad opening the batting. Rahmatullah Gurbaz and Asghar Afghan in the middle are more than good enough to build the innings and with the finishing abilities of Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan, the batting lineup looks as good as any. The fact that Afghanistan are lacking in fast bowler is a problem that might haunt them a little. Probable XI Hazratullah Zazai, Mohammad Shahzad (wk), Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Najibullah Zadran, Asghar Afghan, Mohammad Nabi (c), Gulbadin Naib, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman, Naveen ul Haq, Hamid Hassan Scotland Scotland on the other hand would look to continue with the winning momentum and anyway tier spinners have done well, so no point in bringing about any change in the Playing XI. PNG fighting spirit too little too late as Berrington, Davey power Scotland to second win

PNG fighting spirit too little too late as Berrington, Davey power Scotland to second win

The way Norman Vanua and Kiplin Doriga were hitting the ball between overs 14 to 16 and brought the required run rate from more than 12 at the start of the 14th over to only 46 from the last 24 balls with two set batsmen in, it seemed like Scotland were about to have a taste of their medicine. But first Mark Watt and then Josh Davey bowled brilliantly to squeeze the run-scoring as well as get both batters out to make it almost impossible for two new png batters to get 38 off the last two overs. However, Chad Soper didn’t lose hope and thanks to six on the last ball of the 19th over from number 11 Kabua Morea, the Barramundis needed 24 from the last six balls. With Soper hitting the second ball of Josh Davey’s and innings’ last over for a huge six over the cow corner, for a moment ‘remember the name’ must have flashed in front of the eyes of the supporters of the Pacific nation. But it wasn’t to be as Davey, who had bowled brilliantly up until then bowled a slower bouncer, the same ploy he used against Vanua, and got the wicket of Soper to end the innings and win it for his team by 17 runs. Davey’s figures of 4-18 are now the best bowling figures for a Scotland player in a T20 World Cup game. Though PNG got so close at the end, it didn’t look like happening when they had lost five wickets for 35 runs and had gotten off to a worse possible start. Their top two batters in skipper Assad Vala and Charles Amini were gone and it was only up to Vanua and Sese Bau to get the team as close as possible to the target. The two partnerships of 37 between Bau and Vanua and 53 between Vanua and Doriga were crucial in getting where PNG eventually got to. Earlier in the day, after winning the toss Scottish skipper Kyle Coetzer decided to bat first. Though Coetzer himself and the other opener George Munsey failed once again, Richie Berrington and Matthew Cross steadied the ship with a 92 run stand. Though Cross got out on 45, Berrington made sure that he completed his third T20I fifty. The Scotts were going great guns until the 17th over with Berrington touching his 70 run mark. However, in the last three overs, they lost track and lost six wickets for just 19 runs as the PNG team pulled back and restricted the Scots to only 165-9. Morea was the pick of the bowlers for PNG as he ended up with figures of 4-31 in his four overs. The Scots are in for a great game once again when they face Oman in their last game and that game might just turn out to be a virtual qualifier if Bangladesh go on to win against Oman and PNG in their next two games.

World T20 2021: Scotland lose six wickets in final two overs against PNG

PNG made a fine return against Scotland with the ball during the World T20 2021 match in Al Amerat on Tuesday after they scalped six wickets in the final two overs. Batting first, Scotland lost a couple of early wickets and were reduced to 26/2 when Cross and Berrington joined hands to provide the resistance to the side. The two batsmen compiled a partnership of 92 runs for the third wicket before Cross was dismissed for 45 off 36. Berrington on the other hand went on to score a 49-ball 70 that included three maximums and six fours during the course. The right-hander also stitched a stand of 33 runs with MacLeod for the fourth wicket but the latter’s dismissal broke the shackles and PNG were back in the game as Scotland saw a flurry of wickets in quick succession. They were reduced to 165/7 to eventually get restricted to 165/9 in 20 overs. Kabua Morea picked up a total of four wickets at the cost of 31 runs in 4 overs while Chad Soper had three scalps to his name for 24 runs in 4 overs. Simon Atai returned with figures of 1/20 in three overs. Scotland who have a win under their belt in the competition lost four wickets in the final over of the innings.

Fresh from historic win, Scotland eye big gains against PNG to confirm Super 12 entry

Fresh from historic win, Scotland eye big gains against PNG to confirm Super 12 entry

Scotland achieved a historic feat against Bangladesh in their first game after they defeated them by six runs and gained precious two points, That was the big game for the Scots as they would now have comparatively easier games against Papua New Guinea and Oman. The first of those games happen to take place on October 19. PNG looking to get past opening match horror While Scotland started with a win, PNG had a horrible showing in their maiden T20 World Cup appearance as they were thrashed by 10 wickets by hosts Oman. The entire batting order of the Barramundis fell like a deck of cards except for their skipper Assad Vala, who hit a historic maiden World cup fifty and all-rounder Charles Amini, who looked in good nick but got run out, unfortunately. The bowling of the PNG team was equally bad, as they were unable to pick a wicket. However, what disappointed me most was the fielding especially the catching by the players from the Pacific nation. While that might have been the big stage fright and hence when they face Scotland next, they might just be ready for the ultimate clash against a team which they have not beaten in their previous two T20I meetings. Scotland look to sharpen batting skills Scotland on the other hand also have a lot to change as far as their batting is concerned. The likes of skipper Coetzer, Richie Berrington, George Munsey and Callum McLeod would look to get back to form after being muddled by the spin of the Bangladeshi bowlers. The bowling of PNG will also be relatively better to face for the Scots who like pace on the ball. The match being a day game also help their cause. Scotland vs Papua New Guinea: Match Details Match Number- 05 Date and Time: October 19, 2021, 03:30 pm IST, 02:00 pm Local, 10:00 am GMT Venue: Oman Cricket Academy Ground, Al Amerat, Oman Broadcast and Livestream: Star Sports Network and Hotstar Pitch Report As far as the evidence from the first day of the tournament is concerned, the wicket at Oman Cricket Academy had no demons in it whatsoever. Oman’s Jatinder Singh and Aqib Ilyas showed that in the first game. In the second game too, it was disciplined bowling rather than the wicket that resulted in 140 being defended. Weather Forecast With plenty of sunshine and no chances of rain or any other disturbance in the offing, this day game wouldn’t have anything depending on the weather.
