Unmukt Chand fails to impress on Big Bash League debut

Former India U19 captain Unmukt Chand made his BBL debut for Melbourne Renegades against Hobart Hurricanes on Tuesday, 18 January. He was expected to do well considering his promise and being one of the most talented young prospects while he was growing in India. Things did not go very well for Unmukt though as the right-hander’s stay wasn’t a long one at the crease. He was dismissed for 6 runs off 8 deliveries by Sandeep Lamichhane after being caught in the deep by Caleb Jewell. Chand came into the crease after the dismissal of Shaun Marsh who played a good knock of 51 off 38 balls setting Renegades up for a win. However, after coming into crease, Unmukt was fed straight to speedster Riley Meredith, whom he found tough to negotiate. Chand dealt in singles as he found it tough to get away frustrating Aaron Finch at the other end. Having already played five balls, Unmukt tried to cut loose against Nepal spinner Lamichhane and lofted a ball to deep midwicket. The shot was not timed well, and he got caught yards inside the boundary line. The wicket ended up halting Renegades' momentum and the team eventually lost by 6 runs.

BBL 11 | Watch Unmukt Chand receive maiden cap and become first Indian to play in men's Big Bash

India’s Under-19 World Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand has become the first Indian to officially play in the Big Bash League, Australia’s domestic T20 competition after he received his maiden cap from the Melbourne Renegades, the franchise which had signed him before the start of the tournament. Prior to coming to Melbourne, Chand, who represented Delhi in the Indian domestic circuit and had moved to Uttrakahad off late, went to the United States and played in their domestic competitions. The 28-year-old moved to the US after having lost all his hopes of making it big in Indian cricket as he was unable to make a mark in the Indian domestic circuit even after playing 67 First Class, 120 List A and 77 T20 games. In total, he has scored 18 centuries and 53 half-centuries in all formats combined, but could never have a perfect season to knock at the doors of the Indian national team. Now, in his second innings, he has chosen the USA and hopes to start afresh with his BBL campaign. He is playing his first game against Hobart Hurricanes. Chand had scored a century in the final of the 2012 Under-19 World Cup against the hosts Australia to lift the World Cup.

Former India U19 skipper Unmukt Chand likely to make BBL debut for Melbourne Renegades

Former India U19 captain Unmukt Chand is in line to make his BBL debut as the right-handed batter has been roped in the squad for the clash against Hobart Hurricanes. The Renegades have made four changes in the side after Mackenzie Harvey and Jake Fraser-McGurk have returned positive COVID-19 tests and have been isolated. Apart from these two, captain Nic Maddinson has been ruled out due to a hamstring injury and Aaron Finch will be taking up the skipper’s role. Kane Richardson has also returned home due to family reasons. “Former India A and India U19 captain Unmukt Chand has been added to the squad, with Zak Evans, Mitch Perry and James Seymour all returning,” Renegades said in a statement. “In the absence of Maddinson and Richardson, former skipper Aaron Finch will lead the team,” the statement added. Chand had made headlines after he led India to their U19 World Cup winning triumph back in 2012 but failed to make a cut in the senior team. The right-hander hung his boots from Indian cricket in August last year. SQUAD: Aaron Finch (C), Cameron Boyce, Unmukt Chand, Zak Evans, Sam Harper, Zahir Khan, Joshua Lalor, Shaun Marsh, Jono Merlo, Mitch Perry, Jack Prestwidge, James Seymour, Will Sutherland

Melbourne Renegades sign up Unmukt Chand in first Indian men signing for Big Bash League

Former India U-19 World Cup-winning captain Unmukt Chand is set to be the first Indian men cricketer to play in the Big Bash League as he has been signed by the Melbourne Renegades for the next edition of the tournament. Notably, Unmukt Chand had announced his retirement as an India player and moved to play in the USA and hence he did not need any permission or no objection certificate from the BCCI. Chand opened on the “difficult to accept” fact about not playing for the country again but nevertheless, he is cherishing the freedom to play in all leagues across the world. "It wasn't easy, to be very honest, the fact that I won't be playing for the country anymore is something that is difficult to accept. But I enjoying playing for the US, it's been getting better every day. And I can now play all the leagues around the world, that's a great opportunity for me personally. On his upcoming stint with the Renegades, Chand said that he is looking to earn a name for himself in the Big Bash and help the men in red to win the championship. "I've loved watching the Big Bash and players around the world coming in ... it's a great platform and I always wanted to play there. I'm really looking forward in the coming years that I can make a name for myself and hopefully win championships for the teams I play for. I'm really looking forward to coming to Melbourne and to get going. I've always enjoyed playing in Australia. I haven't been to Melbourne before… I know there are lots of Indians in Melbourne, so it's going to be nice, and I hope the crowds turn up for games as well." The Renegades coach David Saker is banking on the “wealth of experience” that Chand is bringing with himself after leading India Under 19 side and A sides on multiple occasions and flexibility with the bat. He said that the right-hander has the capability to turn things around quickly and the Renegades are looking forward towards him with various roles in their minds. "He brings a wealth of cricket experience," coach David Saker said of Chand. "To have a player joining our team who has represented three IPL teams and led his country at 'A' and Under 19 level is fantastic. As a batter, Unmukt is dynamic and can change games quickly. He has spent much of his career at the top of the order, but we believe he has the flexibility to fill a variety of roles as we need,” Saker said. Unmukt Chand could not play for the senior India side as his stocks could sustain at the highest level after the highs of the Under 19 world cup triumph in 2012. He led the India U-19 side to the championship title on the back of a stupendous century in the final of the World Cup in 2012. He was picked up by the then Delhi Daredevils, the Mumbai Indians and the Rajasthan Royals but his bat did not do justice to the talent and promises he offered at the start of his career.

Former India U19 captain Unmukt Chand who had retired from Indian cricket will now be a part of Minor League Cricket (MLC) in the USA. The right-handed batsman will play for Silicon Valley Strikers for the 2021 season. “I’m delighted to take the next step in my cricket career by being part of the long-term growth of American cricket and the launch of Major League Cricket,” said Chand. Chand who led India U19 to a World Cup win back in 2012 further added that he was excited to play for the Strikers. “I’m excited to have the opportunity to play for the Strikers in Minor League Cricket starting this weekend and help grow the sport locally in the Bay Area, where I have already seen impressive passion for the game of cricket,” he added. The right-hander announced his retirement in a social media post. “Cricket is a universal game and even though the means might change, the end goal is still the same- to play at the highest level. Also, a huge thanks to all my supporters and well wishers for always carrying me in their heart. There is no better feeling than being loved and appreciated for who you are,” he wrote. The tournament will have more than 200 matches taking place at 26 venues and will feature over 400 players.
