CSA Provincial T20 | Knights crowned inaugural champions, beat Dolphins in thrilling finale

It was a thrilling finish to the Cricket South Africa’s Provincial T20 Knockout tournament, which started out as the first tournament of the revamped domestic structure of South African cricket. Knights, a well established domestic giants beat another giant in Dolphins by seven runs to be crowned as champions of the season’s first and only tournament where division 1 and division two teams played side by side. Set a target of 177 to win for the Dolphins, the team from Durban were not able to recover from the early blows and by the time they did, it was almost too late to wake up. Dolphins lost two big wickets of Keegan Petersen and skipper Marques Ackerman early on the chase and then the re-build was started by two other senior pros in Khaya Zondo and Sarel Erwee. The two added 51 for the third wicket before Alfred Mothoa removed Erwee. Though Bryce Parsons tried to build a partnership with Zondo and the duo did add did 26 for the fourth wicket, Zondo’s dismissal off the bowling of Nealan van Heerden was a big blow to Dolphins’ hopes. However, not leaving the battle till it was done with, Parsons partnered Jason Smith and the duo added 52 runs in just 37 balls to bring Dolphins as close as the fact that only 33 runs were needed in the last two overs to win. But with Migael Pretorius picking two wickets in two balls including that of Parsons, Smith was left with too much to do alone. Although the 27-year-old did take strike on all the remaining 10 balls in the innings, Smith could only manage to get 25 out of the required 33 as his team lost the game by seven runs. Earlier in the day, after being asked to bat first, Knights, with the help of opener Patrick Krugerskipper’s 61, Pite van Biljon’s 42 and quickfire 28 and 29* respectively from experienced pros Rilee Rossouw and Farhaan Behardien, managed to get to 176-5 in their 20 overs. Pretorius for his figures of 3-30 and especially for picking two match-changing wickets was awarded Man of the Match.

CPL 2021 | Tallawahs keep Semis hopes alive after beating table-toppers Patriots

CPL 2021 | Tallawahs keep Semis hopes alive after beating table-toppers Patriots

It was a complete team effort by Jamaica Tallawahs which led to their comeback against table-toppers St Kitts and Nevis Patriots just a day after the thrashing they received at the hands of the Trinbago Knight Riders. The Tallawahs rose from that defeat and played it all out to win by 22 runs against the Patriots and thereby kept their Semi-Finals hopes alive and kicking. While it was Andre Russell with both bat and ball to drag Tallawahs to victory, other meaningful contributions came from skipper Rovaman Powell, Shamarh Brooks and pacer Migael Pretorious. The Tallawahs set up a target of 170 for the Patriots who were without their usual heroes in Dwayne Bravo Sherfane Rutherford for this game. The chase really couldn’t get going as the Patriots lost Evin Lewis and Chris Gayle inside the powerplay. These were the two men on whom the team was most dependent. After their departure, wicketkeepers Joshua da Silva and Devon Thomas tried to stitch a partnership and fuel the chase, but it was too much to ask from them as the partnership was nipped in the bud by a run out which led to da Silva’s dismissal wit the team score at 77 in the 13th over. With the required run rate increasing ever so fast, Dominic Drakes and Fabian Allen tried to keep up with it. But in the end, it became ever so high that the two batters crumbled under it and eventually the Patriots innings ended at 147-8. For Tallawahs, Pretorious picked three wickets while Veerasammy Permaul removed two batters. Earlier in the day, after winning the toss, Patriots skipper Gayle invited Tallawahs to bat first. After a cautious start by the openers Kennar Lewis and Kirk McKenzie, Powell and Brooks took control of the situation and guided the team past the 100 run barrier. Powell and Carlos Brathwaite then got out in quick succession, but Brooks continued with Russell who hit a quickfire 28 off 17 balls. In the end, the team ran out of gas and could only reach 169 even as they looked like crossing 180 easily. For the Patriots, Drakes, Fawad Ahmed and Jon-Russ Luke Jaggesar took two wickets each. After five wins in a row, this is now the third straight defeat for the Patriots who still occupy the top position on the table.

CPL 2021 | Russell and Migael Pretorius help Tallawahs register biggest victory in CPL history

CPL 2021 | Russell and Migael Pretorius help Tallawahs register biggest victory in CPL history

It was not a nice day, to begin with for the renamed St. Lucia kings in their very first match of the Caribbean Premier League 2021 and it surely wasn’t a nice day to end with as they were thrashed by the Jamaica Tallwahs and consequently suffered the biggest defeat in the history of the league’s nine-year history. After conceding 255 with the ball, the Kings were bundled out for 135 even as Tim David scored 56 at the strike rate of 200. The Tallawahs won by 120 runs, which is the biggest win by a margin of runs in the history of the CPL. The previous biggest defeat was in the name of the Tallwahs at the hands of St Kitts and Nevis Patriots which came in 2015 at this very ground. The Tallawahs were then defeated by 119 runs, getting bowled out for 80, chasing 200. Chasing a huge total, Rahkeem Cornwall tried to give the Kings a great start hitting the first two balls for a four and a six. However, his stay was short-lived as the bouncer from Migael Pretorius was enough to find him in the deep where he was caught by skipper Andre Russell. That wicket started the flurry of wickets and it just kept ongoing. There was no partnership of substance till the fall of the sixth wicket in the form of Keemo Paul. Wahab Riaz and David then tried to reduce the margin of loss as much as possible as the win had gotten out of the equation by that time with 200 needed off 15 overs at more than 14 runs per over. The duo added 53 runs in just 28 balls and looked like getting near to the 150-180 total to avoid humiliation. But it wasn’t to be as David became Pretorius’ fourth dismissal having gotten the wickets Patriots skipper Faf du Plessis and Roston chase along with Cornwall already. The end was brought about soon as leg spinner Imran Khan helped himself to three quick wickets. Earlier in the morning, thanks to brilliant batting by Kennar Lewis, Chadwick Walton and Haier Ali at the start of the innings and a superb 14 ball fifty by Dre Russ at the end made sure that Tallawahs recorded the second-highest team total in the history of the league. Russell’s 14 ball fifty also became the fastest fifty in CPL’s history. Courtesy that, the 33-year-old was awarded Man of the match. With this win, the Tallwahs got to the top of the table thanks to their better net runs rate. They will now face Barbados Royals in their next game on August 29 The Kings will take on Trinbago Knight Riders on the same day as well.
