In a massive setback to Australia Women’s chances, all-rounder Sophie Molineuxhas been ruled out of the upcoming multi-format Ashes series against England Women. She has been diagnosed with a foot injury while playing for the Melbourne Renegades Women in the ongoing edition of the Women Big Bash League. Now, Australia Women are hoping for a return to full fitness by the ODI World Cup scheduled to take place in March 2022 in New Zealand. "Sophie sustained a stress fracture to her right foot during the last week of the WBBL. She is currently offloading in a moon boot and a return to play plan has been developed in conjunction with Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia medical staff,” Australia team doctor Pip Inge said. "Sophie's focus now shifts to her rehabilitation plan which means she'll be unavailable for any upcoming domestic matches as well as the Ashes in January. At this stage, we are aiming to have Sophie available for the ICC Women’s World Cup in New Zealand in March." Her injury and unavailability for the Ashes series will dent Australia further as they are already without another spinner in Georgia Wareham, who ruptured her ligament in the early part of the WBBL. England Women are set to play a Test match, three-match ODI series and an equally longer T20 series on the tour starting January 27.

Perth Scorchers were crowned the champions of WBBL 2021-22 after they defeated Adelaide Strikers by 12 runs in Perth on Saturday. Chasing a target of 147, the Adelaide side had a disappointing start to the proceedings and lost a couple of early wickets before Laura Wolvaardt and Tahlia McGrath joined hands to steady the ship for the side. The two batters put 65 runs for the third wicket before McGrath was sent back in the hut for a 29-ball 36. The skipper’s dismissal was followed by a few more wickets that pushed Adelaide on the back foot once again as they were reduced to 120/6 in the 19th over. The Strikers then needed 22 off the final over but could only manage to score 9 runs to eventually suffer a defeat. Taneale Peschel was the pick of the bowlers for Perth as she returned with two wickets for 23 runs in 4 overs. Earlier, in the day, Sophie Devine and Beth Mooney provided the Perth team with a steady start as the two put 53 runs on the board for the first wicket. But Mooney was sent back in the hut for 19 off 25 and her departure saw a fall of wickets at regular intervals before a late surge from Marizanne Kapp helped them put up a decent total of 146/5 in 20 overs. Perth Scorchers Women will be up against Adelaide Strikers Women in the final of the WBBL in Perth on Saturday (November 27, 2021). Adelaide defeated Melbourne Renegades by 9 wickets in the Challenger match to make a place for themselves in the title clash. The Adelaide side was on a roll against the Renegades as the bowlers just dismantled the batting unit to restrict them to 83/8 in 20 overs. It was a total team effort on the part of the Adelaide Strikers Women as they put out yet another brilliant performance with the ball to dismantle favourites Melbourne Renegades and qualify for the final of the Women’s Big Bash League 2021. They will now face Perth Scorchers in the final on November 27 at the Optus Stadium. The match was actually no match in the Challenger as the Renegades Women were simply not able to put up any challenge and could score only 83-8 in their allotted 20 overs after falling to 30-6 in the ninth over with all their main batters including tournament’s top scorer Harmanpreet Kaur and opener Jemimah Rodriguez unable to make an impact in the big game. Sophie Molineux, the Renegades skipper wasn’t able to bat in the innings due to some problem and also bowled only two overs. For Strikers, Megan Schutt and Darcie Brown, two Aussie internationals picked two wickets each with Brown being declared Player of the Match for her early strikes and a spell of 2-9 in her four overs. Chasing the target the home team was not at all bothered as the openers Dane van Niekerk and Katie Mack put up a 72 runs stand in only 57 balls. Adelaide Strikers Women quick bowler Amanda Jade Wellington was on fire against Brisbane Heat Women in the eliminator of the Women’s Big Bash League as she picked up the best figures in the league’s history, finishing with ⅝ in her four overs spell. Courtesy of that record-breaking spell, the Heat could get up to only 114 for eight wickets in their 20 overs. Apart from Georgia Voll and experienced Grave Harris, none of the Heat pure batting talents could get into the double figures. Had Nicola Hancock not made 40 off just 26 balls while batting at number nine, getting past 100 would have also been very tough for the team from Brisbane. However, her efforts were not at all enough as the home team of the Strikers chased down the target of 115 in just 16.3 overs having eight wickets in the bank. While Katie Mack scored her fifth fifty of the tournament and remained not out on 50 off 42 balls, Strikers’ skipper Tahlia McGrath scored unbeaten on 38 off 27 balls to see her team home. With this win, the Strikers made their way to the next step in pursuit of their maiden WBBL glory. With this win, it has now been made clear that WBBL will see a new champion this year as all previous winners, Brisbane Heat, Sydney Sixers and Sydney Thunder are out of the race for the final. Strikers will now face Melbourne Renegades in the Challenger on November 25, the winner of which will face Perth Scorchers Women in the final on November 27 at the Optus Stadium in Perth.

Harmanpreet Kaur is hopeful that the women’s IPL will take place sooner than later which would eventually help the domestic players as they will get the opportunity of playing with international cricketers. "I think we have been looking at this for a long time and I hope, you know, sooner this women's IPL will also start and we will also invite overseas players over there so that they can also share their experience with our domestic players," said the Indian T20 captain. "I think this is something we are really waiting for and I hope, you know, this will start,” she added. The right-hander created history after she became the first Indian to be named WBBL player of the tournament while playing for Melbourne Renegades in the current season of the Australian domestic T20 tournament for women. The Renegades will be playing the Challenger on Thursday where they will face either of the two among Brisbane Heat and Adelaide Strikers. Harmanpreet, who has played 12 games so far has scored 399 runs at an average of over 66 and scalped 15 wickets at an economy rate of 7.46.
