2:31 AM IST, 10:01 PM Local Time: That's it. Surrey start their Vitality T20 Blast 2024 campaign with a win. They beat the Hampshire Hawks by five wickets with four balls to spare. The things were set up by their bowlers nicely before their batters stepped up and contributed to chase down the total in the last over.

Chasing 163, Surrey lost Daniel Lawrence (3) in the second over. Laurie Evans and Jason Roy started building a partnership for the visitors. Both put 43 for the second wicket before Evans (34) departed after playing a blistering knock. It was a short stay for skipper Ollie Pope (3). Roy kept going strong from one end and he received a good support from Jamie Smith at the other end.

Roy (21) and Smith (30) fell in quick succession but Tom Curran walked out to bat and changed the whole complexion of the match. He made sure that he kept the required run rate under control. He kept finding regular boundaries and stitched a brilliant match-winning partnership along with Jordan Clark. Both Clark (21*) and Curran (37*) put an unbeaten stand of 63 for the sixth wicket which helped Surrey chase down the total in the last over with five wickets in hand. Michael Neser picked up two scalps for Hampshire but they failed to defend the total.

Earlier, Hampshire were asked to bat first and they didn’t have the best of starts. Ben McDermott (0), skipper James Vince (9) and Alastair Orr (9) departed inside the powerplay. Joe Weatherley and Toby Albert led the recovery work for Hampshire as they were reeling at 35/3 at the end of the powerplay. Weatherley and Albert played some lovely strokes and put a good stand for the fourth wicket.

Weatherley (33) fell in the 12th over as the 63-run stand came to an end. Albert (46) looked good at the crease before departing in the 16th over. Hampshire lost their way a touch but Liam Dawson (30 off 12) played a brilliant cameo to take his side to 162/9 at the end of their 20 overs. Tom Curran was the standout bowler for Surrey. He picked up three wickets, giving away 32 runs in his four overs. Spencer Johnson and Gus Atkinson also chipped in with a couple of scalps. The batters then stepped up and got across the line with five wickets in hand to start the competition on a winning note.
19.2 C Wood to J Clark
1 Fuller delivery on the pads, Clark stays inside his crease and flicks it nicely past square leg for a single. It will be cut off out on the boundary but that's enough for Surrey as they get home in the last over with five wickets in hand.
