Sam Curran (Player of the Match): "Really pleased. Amazing way to start the tournament. Nothing better than beginning with a victory at home. I wanted to take it deep. It's all about taking risks. (On being handed a lifeline) You need some luck to go your way. The ball was traveling well. Not much spin. The ball was coming on nicely from the pacers."
Sam Curran is the Player of the Match
Shikhar Dhawan (Punjab Kings Captain): "Yeah, it feels great. I was happy to be on the ground and I've been preparing for this tournament, actually, after the last IPL, this IPL I'm playing such a highly competitive cricket, so I was a bit nervous as well.

[After last over's 25 runs] I didn't chat with anyone because I was supposed to go for the batting and bowlers go through their own emotions, so I would rather let them in their own space. And once things get calmed down, then we go and chat. And we got tomorrow, so we'll chat tomorrow and learn to get better.

I felt that we leaked a few extra runs and of course, it's the first match, so nerves are there and that's normal and it's fine.  I feel that under the light, the wicket played better and we got off to a good start. And then Sam played an amazing inning and then Liam finished it nicely. It is a new ground, so the focus was on using our brains and assessing the field."
On-the-go Fours: Sam Curran
Sixes of the Match: Liam Livingstone (3 sixes)

Time for the post-match presentation...
Liam Livingstone (PBKS): “Yeah, I thought we did quite a lot actually. Our spinners pulled back things in the middle overs and our seamers did well at the back end of the innings. The wicket got better under lights and the ball came nicely onto the bat. The toss played a crucial role.

The bowlers bowled well in the practice games and in the nets as well. We have got enough options and it always handy to have those. We were pretty happy mid-way through and hoping that the wicket would get better under lights and it did.

It’s the first time I have batted for more than 10 balls in nine months. But coming back into this group and environment, it has been good. They give a lot of confidence. I have done the work by moving away for a couple of weeks and it has helped me.

We have got a good mixture of players. Sam is a match-winner and he was striking the ball well. we have to be flexible going ahead in the competition as we have got plenty of options."
Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals Captain): “I think that Ishant’s injury was evident as we were playing with one bowler short. Abishek played well but we fell one bowler short. The bowlers pulled back in the end but it wasn’t enough.

Personally, pretty nervous but you have to go through it when you enter the field. I feel we were with the par score but with Ishant’s injury, we were one bowler short. We are not making any excuse. Having one bowler short on this surface is always difficult.

(On Abishek Porel's innings) It was an amazing innings from him. It helped us finish on a high. Congratulate to him because this was only his fourth of fifth match and he batted brilliantly.”
19:18 IST and Local TimeThat’s it. Punjab Kings win by 4 wickets. Full marks to Sam Curran & Co. for their attacking display. Liam Livingstone held his nerve and got his team over the line with a maximum. Delhi Capitals, on the other hand, were ordinary in the field, and they paid the price for it.

Chasing a target of 175, Shikhar Dhawan and Jonny Bairstow were off to a fiery start but they departed in quick succession. Sam Curran, promoted to No. 4, and the impact player Prabhsimran Singh continued the momentum and punished loose deliveries. DC dropped a few chances, and it didn’t help their case. Curran was handed a lifeline on 33, while Harpreet Brar was put down by David Warner in the penultimate over. Curran made 63 as Khaleel brought Delhi Capitals back in the contest with 2 wickets in the 19th over. However, Livingstone finished it off for PBKS. DC missed Ishant Sharma, who walked off due to an ankle injury.

Earlier, after being asked to bat first, a 25-run last over helped DC finish on 174. The visitors had many batters - David Warner, Mitchell Marsh, Shai Hope, and Axar Patel - who got a start but they didn't convert it into a bigger score. Shai Hope was the top-scorer with 33, and the impact substitute Abishek Porel's heroics guided them to a decent total. For Punjab Kings, Arshdeep Singh and Harshal Patel grabbed 2 scalps each. PBKS’ disciplined bowling, and later their batting made sure they opened their account on a positive note.
That's the way to end the contest. Livingstone deposits one into the stands and puts an end to this encounter. The Punjab Kings start the IPL 2024 with a victory.
