At the start of the T20 World Cup 2024, two teams from Group D who were favourites to make it to the next round were South Africa and Sri Lanka, based on ranking and form. However, as we come to the last match from this group, South Africa have lived up to the expectation and have qualified for the next round but Sri Lanka have faltered.

The Wanindu Hasaranga-led side has lost two matches out of three, their third one was a washout against Nepal.

The Netherlands, on the other hand, are still in with a chance but barely. They first want Nepal to do them a favour and beat Bangladesh and then they have to beat Sri Lanka by a huge margin to get their net run-rate above Bangladesh to qualify for the next round.

In the last game of Group D, Sri Lanka will lock horns with the Netherlands at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium, Gros Islet, St Lucia on Monday (June 17).

Sri Lanka's last match was against Nepal which was washed out due to rain in Florida. That result almost ended the Lankan Lions' hopes of reaching the next stage in the ongoing global event.

The Netherlands are coming off a loss in their last fixture. They lost to Bangladesh by 25 runs but did score enough to keep their net run-rate above Sri Lanka, officially knocking them out of the tournament.

Bowling first, the Dutch side conceded 159 runs in 20 overs against Bangladesh. Shakib Al Hasan roared back to form with a breezy knock of 64 off 46. He was well supported by Tanzid Hasan, who made 35 off 26.

Mahmudullah and Jaker Ali added 25 and 17 respectively to take Bangladesh's total close to 160.

The returning Aryan Dutt and Paul van Meekeren took two wickets apiece while Tim Pringle picked up a wicket.

In response, the top 5 got starts for the Netherlands but none of them managed to kick on and convert it into a big one.

Sybrand Engelbrecht top-scored for the Dutch with a knock of 33 off 22. They eventually fell short by 25 runs, only managing to make 134/8 from their quota of 20 overs.

Can the Netherlands win big against Sri Lanka and push their case for a spot in the Super 8s? To find out, tune in at 5 AM IST & 7:30 PM (Sunday) Local Time.
