That's it from another low scoring but a thrilling encounter in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. Ninaad Dixit here signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Akshay Bhide and scorers/analysts Paras Yadav and Bishal Mandal. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world.
Najmul Hossain Shanto (Bangladesh Captain): "The way everyone showed the body language on the field was good. All the batters and bowlers did their job well.

Last 10-15 days we are planning all those things and did our job so very happy. Not very easy, they bowled really well but on wicket like this we should have batted easily.

Very important for Litton as he is struggling since the last 2 series. He batted really well. Hridoy was very courageous playing that Hasaranga over like that.

Very happy with the crowd. I hope they will come back again. Thank you for coming."
Wanindu Hasaranga (Sri Lanka Captain): "Yeah, of course. Our batters batted really well in the first 8 to 10 overs. But in the middle overs, we batted badly.

You know, our bowling attack is our strength. If the batters put 150-160, we can win the games with our bowling attack. In the last two games, the batters didn't do their jobs.

It's tough. We have lost the first two games. We have two more games. We will try to come back stronger.

We bowled with four main bowlers. We had to keep attacking. Our four genuine bowlers did the job but we had to make another four overs with our all-rounders. That was the turning point."

9:34 AM IST, 11:04 PM Local Time: Bangladesh hold their nerve to register their first victory in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. A closely fought 2-wicket win against Sri Lanka has got them a positive opening in the tournament.

The Bangla Tigers won the toss, opted to bowl and restricted Sri Lanka to 124/9. Mustafizur Rahman (3/17) and Rishad Hossain (3/22) breaking the back of the Lankan batting order.

The Lions' bowlers did well trying to defend the low score picking up 3 wickets in the powerplay. Dhananjaya de Silva removed Soumya Sarkar for a duck with Nuwan Thushara getting the 2 other breakthroughs in the first six overs.

Seasoned campaigner Litton Das scored 36 in 38 balls and with Towhid Hridoy (40 off 20) added 63 runs for the 4th wicket. Hridoy smashed Hasaranga for 3 consecutive sixes to put Bangladesh on top but the skipper struck back to get rid of both the set batters in quick time.

Matheesha Pathirana got rid of a struggling Shakib Al Hasan thanks to a magnificent catch from Maheesh Theekshana. Mahmudullah held his nerve till the end with an unbeaten 16 in 13 balls. Nuwan Thushara kept Lanka in the hunt with 2 more wickets but bowling Dasun Shanaka proved costly in the 19th over where 11 runs were needed. A six off the first ball eased the pressure off Mahmudullah.

Thushara (4/18) was the pick of the bowlers with Hasaranga (2/32), Dhananjaya (1/11) and Matheesha Pathirana (1/27) the other wicket takers. Maheesh Theekshana bowled well for his 0/25 but there were just not enough runs for Sri Lanka to put an actual squeeze.

2 THAT WILL BE IT!! Full on the middle stump. Advances down the track and drills it to mid off. Give up the run as the fielder has a shy at the bowling end but misses. A direct hit and Mahmudullah was gone. Overthrows in the leg side! The batters charge back for the second run as well. Throw is collected by the keeper but Mahmudullah has made his ground easily. Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by two wickets.
WIDE signaled by Michael Gough. So, the review works against Sri Lanka here. They went upstairs to check for caught behind but there was a clear gap between the bat and the ball. The side-on replays showed that the ball was well above the head and it has been signaled as WIDE.

WD WILD SHOUT FROM MENDIS FOR CAUGHT BEHIND! Mahmudullah looks for a wide. Dasun bangs it short outside the off stump. Mahmudullah chases it for a cut but misses. Looks at the umpire asking for an overhead wide. Sri Lanka take a review out of desperation. Fair delivery. Nothing on UltraEdge! Shanaka has taken the game into the final over. Hang on! Umpire has signaled wide now! 2 needed in 7 balls.
