It’s a wrap from our coverage of this game. Afghanistan made history with their first-ever win over New Zealand in a T20 World Cup. But the cricket continues on our network. Later in the day, Netherlands will take on South Africa and the big one coming up from Barbados where Australia will take on defending champions England.

For now, it’s me Ajay Pal Singh signing off on behalf of my co-commentators AkshayaKrishna Polya and Deepak Prakash along with scorer/analyst Ashok Dayma who brought you all the updates from this clash. Cheers!

NUMBER'S GAME:

-Fazalhaq Farooqi is the first Afghanistan bowler to pick up consecutive four+ wickets in T20 World Cup

- 84 runs: This is the biggest margin of defeat in terms of runs for New Zealand in T20 World Cup
Rashid Khan (Afghanistan Captain): "Yeah, it was a great performance from us. The way they played, didn't throw their wickets. They think to take it deep, overall a great win for Afghanistan.

Yeah, it was just that we haven't score too many but we haven't lost wickets either. It was communicated to the batters to go hard in the last 10 overs and attack, looking at their options and match-ups.

The bowling we have, we knew we can make it hard for any side. That's what happened. The way our seamers started and then spinners Nabi and myself, we were focussed on our skills. Dew was there but we stuck to our plans.

It was about the energy, the way Gurbaz and Zadran were running. For us, it was about putting in 100 percent effort each and every ball.

I don't like taking wickets that much, it is the energy every ball that gets me excited. Yeah, Farooqi has given us great starts with early wickets and that has helped our spinners to come in and attack from the word go."
Kane Williamson (New Zealand Captain): "Yeah, look, firstly, congratulations to Afghanistan. They outplayed us in all facets of the game. To get a total like that on a fiddly surface, they kept wickets in hand and played it beautifully.

It wasn't good enough for us as a group to start a big tournament. It will be a quick turnaround for us, and we need to be ready for the next one. The boys were focused and worked hard in preparation for this game, but it was not our best performance.

We will have a chat about it, review it, and move on quickly. This is a long tournament, so we need to put this performance behind us and look forward to the next one. The games come thick and fast, and we need to be better. With the bat in hand, you want to get a partnership together. They were excellent. The opportunities we had and didn't take - on a surface like that, it goes a long way in changing the outcome. Not over-analysing but there are some things we need to address.

Having said that, we needed to put together a partnership, chasing 160. It was frustrating. Especially the fielding in the first 10 overs. It is difficult on a wicket like that when you are not putting things together in the field.

We need to take a step forward. Next up for us is the West Indies. They are playing a fantastic brand of cricket.

Our performance was not good enough. We have another big challenge coming for us and it is about putting together a performance we can be proud of. Having said that, take nothing away from Afghanistan. They executed really well.

The opportunities we had and didn't take - on a surface like that go a long way in changing the outcome. We will examine our performance, but we must avoid overanalyzing. There are a certain things we will address in the meeting."
Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Player of the match: "I think, nothing special than the win. We waited three years for this. We have played them in the past but couldn't get the job done. We will have to quickly put this win behind us and get back on the next job at hand.

The wicket was not easy, the total that we got was good. A bit frustrated because couldn't end the way I wanted to. The total in our mind was 130-140. Credit to bowlers, the way they bowled against a world class team like New Zealand.

We knew this is a very good partnership at the top. We discuss that when it is not my day, he takes on the bowler. When it is not his day, I do the attacking.

My job is to keep everyone active on the ground. If I am not active, I make sure other players are loud and give energy to the bowlers."
PLAYER OF THE MATCH: Rahmanullah Gurbaz
8:15 AM IST & 10:45 PM Local Time: That's it, Afghanistan have created history. They have beaten New Zealand for the first time in a T20 World Cup contest. A comprehensive 84-run takes them to the top of the points table.

Earlier in the match, New Zealand had won the toss and opted to bowl. The decision backfired as Afghanistan openers Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz put on a century stand for the first wicket.

Zadran was the first to depart after scoring 44. Gurbaz kept going from the other end and played a fine knock of 80 off 51.

Trent Boult picked up two wickets in the last over to restrict Afghanistan to 159 for 6.

However, it proved to be too much to chase for New Zealand. Fazalhaq Farooqi started well with the ball, giving a breakthrough on the first ball of the second innings. He castled Finn Allen on the first ball.

The left-arm pacer then got Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchel in successive overs to derail the New Zealand chase.

Rashid Khan came in and ran through the middle order. He finished the night with four wickets and gave away just 17 runs in his four overs.

Farooqi too picked up four wickets for 17. Mohammad Nabi also chipped in with a couple of wickets as New Zealand were bundled out for 75 in 15.2 overs.
