In the 2nd T20 World Cup 2024 match, the co-hosts West Indies will take on Papua New Guinea at the Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday (June 2).

The ICC team ranking and the return of some senior players make the West Indies one of the top contenders for the title this year. They will start their campaign as favourites against Papua New Guinea (PNG), who are featuring in their second T20 World Cup.

PNG were also part of the T20 World Cup 2021, held in the UAE but they failed to reach the next round, finishing last in the group stages.

For the West Indies, the return of Andre Russell has bolstered their middle-order and has given them flexibility in terms of team combination as he can bowl a few crucial overs in the middle phase of an innings.

The Rovman Powell-led side got a decent win under their belt in a warm-up clash against former champions Australia. The West Indies posted a mammoth first-inning total of 257 for 4.

Nicholas Pooran and skipper Powell hit half-centuries while Sherfane Rutherford's late cameo of 47 off 18 dismantled the Aussie bowling attack.

West Indies are one of the two teams (the other one being England) who have won two T20 World Cup titles and they are eyeing their third in front of their home crowd.

The West Indies have all bases covered for the marquee event. They have pacers like Alzarri Joseph, Obed McCoy and Shamar Joseph while spin bowling too is doing fine for them with the likes of Gudakesh Motie and Akeal Hosein taking wickets in the middle-overs.

Russell, Roston Chase, and Romario Shepherd are the all-rounders available for the co-hosts. Their batters have proven themselves all over the world, playing in different franchise leagues.

Papua New Guinea, on the other hand, are relatively new on the international scene and facing a former champion in their first match could be a daunting task for the associate nation.

Alie Nao, the right-arm pacer, impressed one and all in the warm-up matches. He picked up 2 for 9 against Namibia and 2 for 12 against Oman. The visitors would be relying on him to keep the star-studded Windies batting line-up quiet.

Charles Amini is one of the few PNG all-rounders who has over 1000 runs in T20 cricket as well as more than 50 scalps next to his name. He is also a key player for the associate nation as they look to upset the mighty Windies at home in their tournament opener.
