11:04 PM IST, 6:34 PM Local Time: That will be Stumps on day one. A gripping day of Test cricket comes to an end. England knocked over West Indies on 282 and would have been happy before the visitors stormed back into the contest in the last half hour. England have been reduced to 38/3 at the end of eight overs and trail the West Indies by 244 runs. With those three wickets, the mood in the West Indies' camp will be much better after the dismal show with the bat.

Let’s recap this opening day of this Test. West Indies won the toss and opted to bat first. They had a steady start as their skipper Kraigg Brathwaite and Mikyle Louis survived the first hour of play and kept the hosts at bay. The English bowlers got plenty of movement with the new ball but the Windies openers were good with their decision-making and took their stand past 50.

Brathwaite brought up a well-composed fifty off 70 balls. Louis edged one to the keeper to fall on 26 against Gus Atkinson as the 76-run opening stand came to an end in the 22nd over. Kirk McKenzie started positively but was cleaned up Mark Wood on 12. Alick Athanaze dragged one back onto the stumps to fall on two right on the stroke of lunch.

Brathwaite was looking good at the crease but departed on 61 right after the lunch break. Kavem Hodge left one alone and got knocked over on 13 as the half of the West Indies side was back in the hut with only 115 on the board. Jason Holder and Joshua Da Silva led the recovery work for the visitors. Both looked solid at the crease and remained unscathed till tea.

Holder brought up his fifty off 92 balls and took the sixth-wicket stand past 100. England were looking clueless before local boy Chris Woakes broke the 109-run stand. Da Silva edged one to the keeper to fall one short of his fifty. Alzarri Joseph started aggressively but played one shot too many as he got dismissed on 15.

Holder was looking good at the crease but was cleaned up by Atkinson on 59 with a beauty. Shamar Joseph scored 16 while batting at 11 but the English bowlers did a fantastic job to knock over the Windies on 282 in 75.1 overs. Each of the English bowlers, barring their skipper, picked up at least a wicket. Atkinson grabbed a four-fer whereas Woakes picked up three.

Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett opened for England. Jayden Seales broke the 29-run opening stand by removing Crawley on 18. Ben Duckett chopped one onto the stumps to fall on three. Mark Wood was sent in as a nightwatchman but he edged one to second slip to fall without troubling the scorers. Ollie Pope and Joe Root remained unbeaten on six and two respectively as England ended day one on 38/3, trailing West Indies by 244 runs.

It's game on here in Edgbaston as both sides will be looking to come out hard in the opening session to take control of this Test. It's going to be another fascinating day of Test cricket tomorrow.
