Milestone
That brings an end to our coverage of this Test. It was an emphatic win for England to take an unassailable lead in the series. The third and final Test begins on Friday. Do join us for that.
It was a real pleasure bringing you all the coverage from this Test. For now, this is Akshay Bhide, signing off, on behalf of scorer Ghanendra Singh Thakur. Until next time, cheers and good bye.
Ollie Pope (England Captain): "Obviously, happy to get there. Two nil in the series is great and good contributions from everyone present in the team.

This week was different to last, with the mode of dismissals. With the slope here at Lord’s, you are always in the game. We were lucky to get to that lead after Root’s innings.

(On reviews) Those are not quite going my way. I’ll rather use them and have zero at the end rather than have 3.

Gus is a standout. He is a guy that is going to be spoken about a lot. Also, Matt Potts and Stone. Those 30-40 runs can take you into good positions and those runs were very crucial.

(On not enforcing the follow-on) It just made sense that the pitch was gradually getting worse. It was important to give the bowlers some time off the field and then have 10 wickets to pick rather than 20 on the trot.

We gave the spinners a crack. We could have tried something different but we knew the new ball was crucial. That was the reason we walked off. Absolutely. It’s always a special Test and there are a few more Surrey boys who will be looking forward to the next Test.”
Dhananjaya de Silva (Sri Lanka Captain): "Well, two days to bat, the message was to bat simple and bat long. They always put the pressure back on us. But we have controlled it little bit. But that’s not good enough to win a Test match in England.

(Whether he could have batted first on winning the toss?) I could have batted first. But the top order was struggling a little bit. I had to give them a chance to see how the pitch behaves but it didn’t work out. I have to speak with the coach and the management before the next Test.

(On Kamindu Mendis) Kamindu is getting the runs very quickly. That’s a positive sign for a batter batting at number seven.

As I said earlier, we have to do better to get a win in England and get a win against this England team. We have to do better in all three departments.
Gus Atkinson (Player of the Match): "I think a bit of both. Obviously, to get on both honours board is incredible and it will take some time to sink in.

Root has been incredible this week. To bat with him was great and to get twin hundreds here was incredible.

My first red-ball game at Lord’s and it has gone well. I think the slope is helping me and I’m enjoying bowling here.

The way we go about with the game. We like to attack. As a bowler, it’s great to attack and not worry about the runs. Looking forward to more Tests with this group."

9:33 PM IST, 5:03 PM Local Time: That’s it. A dominant performance from England at the home of cricket as they beat Sri Lanka by 190 runs. With this comprehensive win, England have taken an unassailable lead in the three-match Test series. All smiles in the English camp as they stay unbeaten in this home summer.

Let’s have a look at how things unfolded in this Test match. Sri Lanka won the toss and surprisingly opted to bowl first in lovely batting conditions. Despite that, they bowled beautifully and reduced England to 216/6 in the evening session before things slipped away from them. Joe Root hit a brilliant ton and scored 143. He received an excellent support from Gus Atkinson who notched up his maiden international hundred to get on the honours board for the third time in his short career.

Atkinson’s 115-ball 118 helped England post 427 on the board. His knock comprised 14 fours and four maximums. Asitha Fernando picked up a five-wicket haul for Sri Lanka, becoming only the second Lankan bowler to get on the honours board at Lord’s. Milan Rathnayake and Lahiru Kumara also grabbed a couple of scalps each.

What followed was a poor batting performance from the visitors. None of their batters converted their stars into big scores, barring Kamindu Mendis, who continued to impress everyone with his stroke play. He scored a fighting 74 before getting dismissed in the 56th over as Sri Lanka got bundled out on 196, handing England a massive first-innings lead of 231. Each of the four English pacers picked up two wickets apiece.

England batted again and Joe Root stepped up once again for them. He showed his class and brought up his second hundred of the match, becoming only the fourth batter in the history to notch up twin tons in a Test at Lord’s. This was Root's 34th Test ton and became the English batter with most centuries in the longest format. Root’s enthralling 103 helped England get to 251 as they set a target of 483 for the visitors. Asitha Fernando picked up three wickets in England’s second innings to finish with match-figures of 8/154.

Sri Lanka lost Nishan Madushka (13) and Pathum Nissanka (14) early in the chase. Prabath Jayasuriya (4) was sent packing early on day four. Dimuth Karunaratne showed good composure at the crease and brought up his 38th Test fifty but fell soon on 55. Angelo Mathews looked good for his 36 but played a loose shot and departed. Dinesh Chandimal at six scored a quickfire 62-ball 58 before getting dismissed.

Skipper Dhananjaya de Silva and Milan Rathnayake showed resistance lower down the order. Both put 73 between them and de Silva scored 50 before dragging one back onto the stumps. Rathnayake scored 43 before getting dismissed by Atkinson. Chris Woakes picked up the final wicket as Sri Lanka got bundled out on 292 to lose the game by 190 runs.

Gus Atkinson once again appeared on the honours board at the home of cricket. He picked up a fifer in Sri Lanka’s second innings to derail the visitors. Chris Woakes and Olly Stone also chipped in with a couple of scalps each as they completed a dominant performance with the ball in hand to clinch the series with a game to go.
86.4 C Woakes to L Kumara
W High in the air and taken by Stone. That's the final nail in the coffin as England beat Sri Lanka by 190 runs. Woakes with another slower delivery on the stumps, Kumara swings at it in looking to loft it down the ground but gets it off the toe end of the bat. Stone from mid on moves back and takes a good catch to put an end to this fixture.
86.3 C Woakes to L Kumara
0 A slower delivery outside off, Kumara pushes it straight back to Woakes.
86.2 C Woakes to L Kumara
0 Banged in short on the stumps, Kumara goes for the pull but misses.
86.1 C Woakes to L Kumara
4 FOUR!!! Slapped by Kumara. Round the wicket, shorter delivery outside off, Kumara backs away and slaps it hard down the ground through the vacant mid off region for a boundary.
