That is the end of our coverage as well. Australia got their first win, while Sri Lanka succumbed to three defeats. For now, this is me, AkshayaKrishna Polya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator, Akshay Bhide, who, alongside our scorer/analyst Zeeshan Naiyer, brought you all the live-action of this contest. We will meet again in another World Cup match. Until then, it's cheers!
Sri Lanka equal the tally of most defeats in the ODI World Cups. They have now lost 42 games and tied up with Zimbabwe.
This is Sri Lanka's 8th straight loss to Australia in the ODI World Cup since the 1996 World Cup final.
Pat Cummins (Australia Captain): "Yeah, happy today. Ahh... Probably nothing was said. It was on the back of two losses. The group has got high standards. Everyone was up for it, and they did well on the field.

Not really, we didn't start well. But we bowled well. At 130 off for 1, Sri Lanka was going well. But we stayed in it and scratched our way back into the game.

I am not the right bloke to ask for that (chuckles on asking for the par score on this pitch). The bowlers did well and hit the deck hard. Maybe 300 would have been a par total.

There are a lot of people watching it. They speak, and the outside noise is not a matter of concern for us. Most of the parts of the game came together for us. We will try to keep it up and continue."
Kusal Mendis (Sri Lanka Captain): "I think, credit to Kusal and Nissanka for the way they batted at the top. The middle and lower batters didn't contribute and maybe 280-290 was a good total on this wicket.

More dot balls and less strike rotation led to regular wickets. I think we played high-risk strokes and failed to post a good total on the board as the wicket looked good for batting.

We have batted really well in the last two games. Today, we struggled to get going. I hope we can do better in the next game. We still have six games and I'm confident of my batting unit.

Madushanka bowled really well. He bowled beautifully with the new ball and picked wickets. Dunith struggled a bit but I'm confident that he will bounce back.

I hope KJP and Pathi recover quickly and get available for our next match."
Adam Zampa (Player of the Match): "To be honest, not great. I have been sporting some back spasms for a few days. I just tried to get through this match. But happy to get four wickets and contribute.

I think it was the captain's decision to bowl a right-arm off-break bowler against a left-handed batter. So, I couldn't get a chance to pick up a fifer (laughs).

I haven't been bowling at my best. I feel like I have to be doing better and I have been critical of myself. It took me a lot of time to get into the contest. As I said before, haven't been at my best. But I tried to keep the attitude of picking wickets.

Same role next game. We have got a good game next. We face Pakistan in Bengaluru and that will be a tough game. But just trying to do things right."

Earlier in the match, Sri Lanka won the toss and opted to bat. The Lankan openers Pathum Nissanka (61 off 67) and Kusal Perera (78 off 82) gave the team a head start, adding 125 runs in just over 21 overs. Both the openers got through their respective half-centuries and were looking in ominous touch.

Australia’s confidence was down since the first ball, where they burnt a review. A couple of close chances went down as Josh Inglis put down one, and the lbw appeal wasn't reviewed by Pat Cummins in the bowling of Glenn Maxwell.

Cummins provided the first breakthrough by dismissing Nissanka in the 22nd over. Sri Lanka lost their way in the middle and end overs as Australian bowlers fastened their seatbelts. There was a rain and storm interruption in the middle as well. The Men in Yellow scalped wickets at regular intervals and saw the Lankan Lions fall like nine pins as Sri Lanka was bundled out for just 209 in 43.3 overs.

Adam Zampa (8-0-47-4) was the successful bowler, while Cummins and Mitchell Starc picked a couple of wickets each. Maxwell got the last wicket as Charith Asalanka (25 off 39) holed out at long-on in the 44th over.
9:35 PM IST and Local Time: The Five-Time Champions survive an early scare and get back to the winning ways as they beat Sri Lanka by 5 wickets! Marcus Stoinis, the Hulk, belted one over the sightscreen to kill the contest at his IPL home ground, Lucknow. You can't keep great sides down for a long time. Sri Lanka lose three in three!

Chasing the target of 210, Australia were off to a horror start, with the left-arm pacer Dilshan Madushanka trapping both David Warner and Steven Smith in front of the stumps in what was a double-wicket maiden. Warner was fuming at the umpire Joel Wilson as he raised the finger on one, which looked like going down leg to the naked eyes, and on review, Davey saw the marginal umpire's call on the leg stump. Smith was dead in plumb, and it was his first duck in the World Cups.

Soon, Marnus Labuschagne survived a strangle down leg with a review as the other umpire Chris Gaffaney had to overturn his original decision of out, giving a sigh of relief to the Australians. Mitchell Marsh was on a roll and thrashed the Lankan bowlers left, right and centre, completing a swashbuckling half-century.

Marsh and Labuschagne added 57 runs for the third wicket before the former misjudged the second run in the 15th over and got runout for an individual score of 52 off 51 balls.

Labuschagne and Josh Inglis batted impressively and added 77 runs for the 4th wicket, killing the hopes of the Lankan Lions. Inglis was brilliant with his first World Cup fifty, scoring 58 off 59 balls. Both Labuschagne (40 off 60) and Inglis were taken care of by the Sri Lankan bowlers in the last phase of the run chase, but Glenn Maxwell (31* off 21) and Marcus Stoinis (20* off 10) gave no chance for the Lankan to come back as the Aussies chased down the total with 5 wickets and 14.4 overs to spare.

Madushanka was superb for the Asian side, ending the night with figures of 9-2-38-3, while Dunith Wellalage picked one wicket. Lahiru Kumara was wayward and went for 47 runs in his four overs. The rest of the bowlers did try, but the target was not big enough to put Australia in deep trouble.

This is Pat Cummins' first win in a World Cup game, and the Men in Yellow would breathe a sight of relief after opening the winning account.

Stay tuned for the post-match presentations!
35.2 D Wellalage to M Stoinis
6 SIXXX!!!! The 'Hulk' finishes things in style. What a strike this is from Marcus Stoinis. Wellalage tosses this up around leg, Stoinis gives himself some room and tonks it straight over the long on fence for a biggie. It came right off the meat of the bat and sails over the ropes comfortably. With this, Australia beat Sri Lanka comprehensively by five wickets and register their first win of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. Sri Lanka, on the other hand, lose three in a row and remain winless.
35.1 D Wellalage to M Stoinis
0 Round the wicket, a yorker-length delivery outside off, Stoinis goes for the drive and mistimes it straight back to Wellalage.
Just one is required now for Australia. Dunith Wellalage to bowl probably the last ball/over of this game. Stoinis is waiting for the field to be set. Everyone has come up.

34.5 D Madushanka to G Maxwell
1 Another slower delivery from Madushanka and Maxwell cuts it to the right of point for a run.
