The first win for England while Bangladesh gets their maiden defeat in this mega-event. England will move to Delhi to face Afghanistan next while Bangladesh while go south in the land of Chennai to meet New Zealand.

This is it from the first game of a doubleheader Tuesday. This is Arijit Kundu, signing off along with co-commentator, Akshay Bhide and scorer, Zeeshan Naiyer. Cheers and goodbye!
Jos Buttler (England Captain): "I think really good performance. Just the backend of the innings, we could have got a few more. We went harder at the first and the pitch slowed down a bit. Jonny Bairstow, Dawid Malan, Joe Root, they were all great. Dawid Malan to go out there and get a hundred is what you need. yeah, I think you are always looking for the perfect performance. From the overs 30-40, we probably scored some 100 runs. The guys attacked that period and it was very smart.

Yeah, I think it can be one of the challenges in the tournament- reading the pitch and reading the conditions. We have got a very good balance and combinations and we shall try to read the conditions well and get the perfect combination."
Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh Captain): "I thought it was a good toss to win. It was colder weather and you can also see the snow on the mountains. There was help for the bowlers but we didn't make use of the conditions. They have quality batters on their side and they were always going to come out hard. We pulled back things in the last 10 overs but were sloppy in the first phase.

We had plans but failed to execute them. The ball was swinging and we failed to hit the right areas. The momentum shifted to England and they took the game away from us.

I thought they would score 380 but we pulled back things well. But 320-325 looks to be a good total here at this venue.

It's a long tournament. We can't put our heads down. Big fixtures coming up in Chennai. New Zealand have been playing well and we just have to focus on one game at a time. We can't lose our hope. We have to keep doing the right things."
Dawid Malan (Player of the Match): "No idea. I was going to say experience or anything but it's nice to contribute. It has been a long journey to get here but will look to contribute consistently.

Sometimes people create a narrative to justify their writing or view but sometimes I play good shots and sometimes I play bad shots. That's all. And you have to cash in when it's your day.

You got Joe Root at number three. He is consistent and it allows us to play around him. That helps me a lot.

I'm desperate to do well in this format and do well in this format. I want to prove people wrong and score consistently and win games for my country."

6:29 PM IST | A comprehensive triumph for the defending champions and it will act as an equaliser to the drubbing they earned in the tournament opener against New Zealand. Bangladesh never looked in this chase and was reeling back right from the second over.
Dawid Malan's scintillating century and Reece Topley's new ball spell being the major highlights behind England's first win in the 2023 World Cup.

In pursuit of a gigantic chase, Bangladesh earned three boundaries in the first over of the bat of Litton Das. However, things weren't the same from the other end. Reece Topley broke through the backbone of the top order within the first powerplay, toppling Tanzid Hasan Tamim, Najmul Hossain Shanto, and Shakib Al Hasan. The first two were sent back to the dugout on back-to-back deliveries while Shakib was removed by a Jaffa and clipped the top of the off stump. While Woakes' leaked a lot of runs in his first spell he managed to bounce back at the fag end of the first powerplay by removing Mehidy Hasan Miraz.

A 72-run stand followed between Mushfiqur Rahim and Litton Das- the two batters who got a half-century in this innings.

Litton continued to fare well against the pacers but was taken aback for 76 (66) when Woakes returned for a second burst. Topley was brought back for a second and final burst as well and he showed the exit gate to Rahim for 51 (64).

Towhid Hridoy did show resilience with the but failed to convert it into a bigger total. He was briefly supported by Rahim and it was Sheikh Mahedi Hasan who accompanied him for the seventh wicket. The tail dragged the chase till the 49th over before the English bowlers could actually strike and restrict them 137 runs shy of the asking total.

Topley was the best of the bowlers with a four-for. Chris Woakes was the next best with a brace. All the other four bowlers- Adil Rashid, Mark Wood, Sam Curran and Liam Livingstone pocketed one each.

Earlier, England were put to bat first after Bangladesh captain, Shakib Al Hasan won the coin flip. The Three Lions garnered 364 runs on the board banking on the top three batters.

The pitch was on the skidding side initially and the openers- Jonny Bairstow and Dawid Malan scratched their way out and scored runs for fun with the progression of time. The wicketkeeper-batter got a fifty on his 100th ODI game and was cleaned up by Shakib Al Hasan when the score was 115.

Malan on the other hand continued to tick the scoreboard and raced to his fourth ODI century in the calendar year 2023. Malan got the support from Joe Root who notched up back-to-back fifties in the World Cup 2023. The pair added 151 runs to the tally with Root scoring 82 (68) and Malan getting to 140 (107). The scoreboard was such that it seemed as if 400 was not that far away.

But the Bangladesh bowlers pulled things back in the final powerplay and restricted England to 364 at the end. Jos Buttler Harry Brook, Sam Curran, Chris Woakes, etc made brisk contributions to help them reach the total. Mahedi Hasan was the pick of the bowlers with a four-for while Shoriful earned three wickets. Stay tuned for the post-match presentation and player quotes.
48.2 S Curran to T Ahmed
W Nails the yorker this time and the stumps are disturbed. Curran from over the wicket bowls a perfect yorker on the stumps, Ahmed goes for a big hoick across the line but misses it completely. You miss I hit stuff from Curran as the ball hits the base of the middle stump. After a humiliating defeat in the opening game, England have bounced back to beat Bangladesh by 137 runs.
Strange!! The ball did feather the leg stump but did not dislodge the bail from the grooves. Nor did the lights flickered!!
48.1 S Curran to T Ahmed
0 Is that a dropped chance? Length delivery around leg, Taskin goes for a big slog across the line and gets an inside edge. Buttler behind the stumps gets a hand to it but fails to hold onto it. Certainly a dropped chance and Buttler has a smile on his face. Hang on. Taskin completely missed it and the ball clipped the leg stump but the bails don't fall off the grooves. This is really strange.
