So, that’s it from his Group A fixture of ICC Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023. Join us tomorrow for some Group B action and stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world. For now, this is Megh Mandaliya, signing off on behalf of my co-commentator Ayan Chatterjee alongside our scorer/analyst Dushyant Madhukar Kumar. Cheers!
Shai Hope (West Indies Captain): "One thing I want to stress on is a collective effort to get runs on the board. Centuries don't matter. Mistakes happen, we need to learn and move forward. I think Singh played well and could have pushed more but a great innings from him in ODIS. I think we need to be ruthless and being positive in our going. Don't be negative. We need to assess better. They bowled well in the first 10 overs and we have to assess better and play better. We came here to win and we got that. Happy with that."
Monank Patel (United States Captain): "I think we started really well. We bowled really well with the new ball. Saurabh and Kyle were really good in the powerplay. We created a lot of changes but we dropped a lot of catches. We ended up giving 30-40 runs extra. The wicket was really nice. It was difficult in the second innings as it was holding a bit. Really happy with the way Gajanand Singh played today. If someone supported Gajanand today, the outcome would have been different.  We were pretty confident today. We made some mistakes today and we have to make sure to rectify those in the upcoming games."
Jason Holder (Player of the Match): "Yes, was really pleased. The situation demanded that. Had a partnership between Roston and that was crucial for us. You need to start well and stick to the processes and need to be disciplined. Stay calm and composed. The tosses will be crucial with the early start. We were on the wrong side. We have to keep out the first spell and then see how it goes. I though Gajanand played a great knock and credit must be given to him and he brought the total quite close to us. Had he got support, it would have been close. But happy for him, it's an ODI hundred. Happy that we got the win."

8:35 PM IST | The two-time World Cup winners West Indies have started their Cricket World Cup Qualifiers 2023 campaign on a stellar note. A remarkable century from Gajanand Singh goes in vain as the Men in Maroon have defeated the United States by 39 runs. The Windies always had the whip hand in the contest and Daren Sammy would be a happy coach at the moment.

Chasing a stiff target of 298, Steven Taylor and Sushant Modani shepherded the USA innings on an unhurried note. The left-right opening pair of Taylor and Modani batted in a precise manner and took control of the chase. The Windies’ pace attack rarely dished out any looseners but the USA opening duo was able to survive a tricky period inside the powerplay. Modani 14(29) attempted to push the pedal but the right-hander perished in the process. Taylor smashed Kyle Mayers for back-to-back boundaries but Mayers exacted retribution and outfoxed the southpaw for 18(21).

The skipper Monank Patel and the vice-captain Aaron Jones joined forces to provide some respite but it was the golden arm of Mayers that clicked again for the Windies. The right-arm pacer got the better of Monank Patel 6(10) courtesy of some brilliant athleticism by Roston Chase. Alzarri Joseph also joined the wickets tally and dismissed Saiteja Reddy Mukkamalla for a duck. The Windies pacers bowled in tandem inside the 20 overs and kept the batters under control. Gajanand Singh and Aaron Jones played with discipline and notched up a 42-run stand for the 5th wicket before Jones 23(30) was involved in an unfortunate mix-up.

Shayan Jahangir, the next batter in, also displayed some resilience but the Windies were able to tighten the screws once again. Little partnerships kept developing for the USA but they were always behind on the asking run rate. Gajanand Singh 101*(109) was able to withstand the heavy Windies’ bowling attack and accumulated his maiden century in ODI cricket but the absence of enough support deteriorated USA’s chances to bounce back.

Earlier in the day, after being invited to bat first, the USA pacers exploited the sideways movement and some extra zip on offer and unnerved the West Indies openers. The left-arm pacer
Saurabh Netravalkar gave the Windies a huge setback early on in the innings as Brandon King 0(7) chipped one straight to the square leg. Netravalkar and Kyle Phillip bowled with control and accuracy in the powerplay that kept vexing the Windies batters. Johnson Charles cut loose immediately and helped the Windies to open their account in the 18th delivery of the contest. However, the right-pacer Phillip cleaned up Kyle Mayers 2(15) in the 6th over with a nip backer.

Johnson Charles pulled through a few close calls in the powerplay, not to mention he was dropped by Steven Taylor on 12 runs. Tottering at 14/2. the Windies skipper Shai Hope paired up with Charles and kept pegging away by playing some single-minded cricket. The surface started to flatten in the middle overs and the Windies batters were quick to shift gears and bat with calculated aggression. Both Charles and Hope took the aerial route on the spinners and played some ferocious shots. The left-arm spinner Nosthush Kenjige broke the threatening 115-run partnership for the 3rd wicket by outwitting Hope 54(60) and that was soon followed by another massive scalp of well-set Johnson Charles 66(80) as the right-hander holed out in the deep.

Two wickets in quick succession again pushed the Windies on the backfoot but it was Nicholas Pooran who counterattacked and swung the pendulum in favor of his side once again. Roston Chase was promoted up the order and maneuvered the ball nicely into the gaps. Pooran and Chase added 55 runs for the 5th wicket before a double-strike Steven Taylor once again allowed the USA to bounce back. Taylor bagged two huge wickets of Pooran 43(38) and Rovman Powell 0(1). However, another partnership flourished for Windies as the USA dropped as many as 4 catches. Crucial contributions from Holder 56(40) and Chase 55(55) took the Windies closer to the 300-run mark.

1 The last ball of the game. Short of a length, Singh drills it down to long-on for a single to end the over and the match. So, Singh finishes on 101* off 109 balls as USA finish with 258/7 in 50 overs. West Indies win this game by 39 runs to collect their first points of this tournament.

1 Short of a length, heaves it away to the deep midwicket region for a single.
There it is! An exceptional century for Gajanand Singh. He is elated at the moment. He removes his helmet and celebrates the milestone. His maiden in ODI cricket and what a tremendous knock this has been. The Guyana-born left-hander has scored a century against a team that he once wished to play for.
49.4 R Chase to G Singh
1 That's it. Fuller length around off, Singh works it away down to long-on for a single as he gets to his maiden ODI hundred. Take a bow, Gajanand Singh.
49.3 R Chase to N Kenjige

49.1 R Chase to G Singh
1 Fuller and wide outside off, Singh carves it away through the point region for a couple of runs as he moves to 99. Oh, there is one short here. So, it will be only a single and this will be one short.
Gajanand Singh is on 97. Roston Chase will bowl the final over of the contest.
