Chasing a target of 270, the Northern Knights were off to an unpleasant start as Liam McCarthy removed Ross Adair 0(3) in the first delivery of his spell. Ruhan Pretorius walked in at number three and counterattacked but the right-hander’s stay was also soon ceased by the extra zip of McCarthy as the Knights squandered two wickets in quick succession under the first powerplay.
McCarthy and Michael Granger kept irking the Knights’ batters early on by generating some sideways movement. Cade Carmichael then joined forces with James McCollum to overcome early problems and the duo aggregated 42 runs for the 3rd wicket. McCollum took the aggressive route and just when he was starting to get into his grove, the right-hander holed out in the deep and had to walk back for 30(38).
Following the departure of McCollum, Morgan Topping paired up with Carmichael but they were unable to raise the tempo as the Reds were excellent to dry up the boundaries in the middle overs. The turning point in the game arrived when Topping swatted two maximums in the 31st over and broke the shackles. However, Liam McCarthy was brought into the attack in the following over and broke the 87-run stand for the 4th wicket by removing the well-set Carmichael 62(84).
The right-handed Topping got to his half-century and kept the Knights in the hunt. He was ably supported by gloveman Neil Rock, who immediately accelerated the innings. The duo hurried the pace at the backend of the innings and secured heaps of boundaries. They added 92 runs for the 5th wicket before Topping 92(92) was outwitted by McCarthy. The southpaw rock also accumulated a crucial 39(29).
The skipper Mark Adair 20(17) also went all guns blazing and almost got his team over the line. The Reds had a lackluster bowling performance after an early collapse and failed to bag wickets at crucial junctures. Liam McCarthy was the pick of the bowlers for the Reds and he finished his stint on 4/67 while Michael Granger also extracted a couple of wickets.
