10:33 PM IST: That’s it. The Lyca Kovai Kings have defeated the Salem Spartans comprehensively by 79 runs. With this win, the Kovai Kings have sealed a spot in the playoffs. They grab their fifth win of TNPL and become the first team to qualify for the knockout stages of the competition. Spartans, meanwhile, suffer their fifth loss and have some soul-searching to do.
Chasing 200 was always going to be a difficult task against the Kovai Kings and the Spartans lost their first four batters inside the powerplay. They were reeling 44/5 in the eighth over as the Kovai Kings were in total control of the game. Sunny Sandhu (29) along with Muhammed Adnan Khan (20) tried to resurrect the innings but fell while trying to up the ante.
Akash Sumra lower down the order played some good shots and scored 20 off 15 balls but fell in the penultimate over. His wicket was the last to fall as the Spartans got bundled out on 120 in 19 overs to lose the game by 79 runs. Impact played K Gowtham Thamarai Kannan was the standout bowler for the Kovai Kings as he finished with figures of 3/20 in his three overs. Shahrukh Khan also chipped in with two scalps as they completed a fantastic bowling display with the ball.
Earlier, the Spartans opted to bowl first and did not have the best of starts as they bowled too many freebies and allowed the Kovai Kings’ batters to score freely. S Sujay and B Sai Sudharsan played brilliantly and put 75 between them for the second wicket before the former fell on 44. Sudharsan also departed on a 28-ball 41 in the 12th over.
The Spartans bowled well in the middle phase but failed to close out the innings. They bowled too many freebies and went on a journey. R Ram Arvindh played a blinder of a knock at the fag end of the innings. He hit some lusty blows and remained unbeaten on 50 off 22 balls to power the Kovai Kings to 199/8 at the end of 20 overs. Sunny Sandhu picked up three wickets for the Spartans. Their batters then failed to step up as they lost the game by 79 runs.
