2:21 AM IST, 9:51 PM Local time: Derbyshire win their home game against Leicestershire by 71 runs in the North Group fixture of the T20 Blast 2023. Losing the toss and batting first, Derby put up their highest ever T20 total scoring 231/4 on the back of Tom Wood's 110* as the opener handled the bat.
Coming back in the XI and opening the batting, Wood hit 4 sixes and 12 fours adding 148 runs with Harry Cane for the opening wicket. Skipper Leus du Plooy scored 30 in 15 balls and Wayne Madsen scored 15 off 9.
In response, Leicestershire also got off to a flier but didn't capitalize on the good start as they kept losing wickets. Peter Handscomb scored 61 in 43 balls with 5 fours and a six adding 75 with his opening partner Wiaan Mulder (35 off 23).
Number 3 Rishi Patel's 19 and Nick Welch's 11 were the only other double figure scores for the Foxes as Zaman Khan (3/27 in 3 overs), Zak Chappell (2/20) and George Scrimshaw (2/30) broke the back of their middle order to take the home side to a big margin win.
Chappell also broke the Derbyshire record for getting most number of T20 wickets in a season during his spell and has 24 wickets to his name in the season. Zaman Khan is right behind him with 23 wickets and thanks to their contribution, the Foxes could only pile up 160 runs in 18.1 overs with Ed Barnes unable to bat due to an injury he faced in the first innings.
