01:42 AM IST: That’s it. Warwickshire beat Northamptonshire by 30 runs. It was a complete performance from the hosts as they grab their fifth win of the Vitality T20 Blast 2023 and get back to winning ways. It was spin to win for Warwickshire and Northamptonshire were outplayed today as they succumb to their fifth loss of the competition.
Chasing 138, Northamptonshire got off to a worst probable start. Chris Lynn was cleaned up by Dan Mousley in the second over. Emilio Gay was looking good in the middle before he fell on 18. Mousley dismissed Joshua Cobb (6) in the very next over as Northamptonshire were reeling at 29/3 at the end of the powerplay. To make matters worse, David Willey departed on two in the next over.
The Warwickshire’s spinners bowled brilliantly in the middle overs and kept a check on the scoring rate. The boundaries dried up and as a result, the required run rate crept up. Northamptonshire were 50/5 at the halfway stage of their innings. Saif Zaib tried hard and scored 25 but it wasn’t enough as they finished their innings on 107/9 to lose the game by 30 runs. Dan Mousley and Moeen Ali picked up three wickets each for Warwickshire as it helped them defend the total successfully.
Warwickshire skipper Moeen Ali won the toss and elected to bat first. Alex Davies looked solid at the crease at the top of the order. He lost his opening partner Robert Yates in the third over. Moeen fell on 12 as they were reduced to 52/2 at the end of the powerplay. Sam Hain along with Davies led the recovery work for the hosts. Davies hit three fours and two maximums before departing on an 18-ball 32. It allowed Northamptonshire to get back in the contest.
The visitors bowled tightly in the middle phase and kept picking wickets at regular intervals. Hain was the lone fighter with the bat for Warwickshire as he top-scored with 35 but his departure in the 18th over meant that they got bundled out on 137 in 18.5 overs. Freddie Heldreich bowled brilliantly for Northamptonshire as he finished with figures of 4/27 in his four overs. The other bowlers also chipped in with wickets as they completed a fantastic performance with the ball. Their batters then faltered as they failed to chase down the total.
