So that’s that and it’s Derbyshire who've got away with a narrow yet enthralling win by 2 runs against Leicestershire!
Batting first, Derbyshire got off to an underwhelming start as they lost both their openers cheaply courtesy Callum Parkinson. Luis Reece departed for not after getting out LBW on the second ball, whereas, Haider Ali was bowled for 10 (9). With the innings needing a rebuild at the very beginning the onus was then on Wayne Madsen and Tom Wood to take things forward.
The duo of Madsen and Wood brought Derbyshire back into the game as they struck an invaluable 95 run-stand for the third wicket. Wayne Madsen played the role of an aggressor and looked controlled throughout the course of the first innings, while Tom Wood anchored from the other end before getting dismissed for 37 (24) by Colin Ackermann.
With the score being at 117-3 from 11.5 overs, it was the wrist spinner Rehan Ahmed who added further pressure by bagging two wickets in quick succession as he got the better of Leus du Plooy 0 (2) and Anuj Dal 1 (2).
Wayne Madsen was losing partners from all angles, but he made sure to stick there right till the end as he eventually played one of the knocks of the tournament. Madsen powered his way through a spectacular 109 (61)* with 12 fours, four sixes and a strike rate of 178.68 to his name.
Brooke Guest’s cameo of 25 (20)* also proved to be pivotal as Derbyshire got to an above par total of 189-5.
Rehan Ahmed was the standout with the ball in hand for Leicestershire as bowled a terrific spell of 2-20 from four overs.
As for the run chase, it started off in a relatively slow manner as Sol Budinger got dismissed for 4 (10) after getting sent back by Zak Chappell. Nick Welsh and Rishi Patel did try to keep things going in the middle but it wasn’t for too long as Welsh departed for 30 (20) by Luis Reece.
With the skipper Colin Ackermann walking in next, the counter attack was on as he combined alongside Rishi Patel to string a partnership of 59 runs to get his team to 117 from 12.4 overs.
Just when it looked like Patel could cruise past his fifty, he ended up skying one to the fielder at the deep in Mark Watt’s over.
Wiaan Mulder struck a couple of boundaries and got to 12 (7) before nicking it to the keeper.
Colin Ackermann was the man under pressure as the wickets tumbled from the other end. However, Rehan Ahmed made sure to provide good support to his captain and put in a valiant effort with the bat as well with his 28 (14)*.
Ackermann topped the charts for his side with his knock of 59 (38)* but wasn’t able to guide his side across the finish line.
George Scrimshaw held his nerve and bowled a match winning final over as he ended up defending 14 runs. Mark Watt did well in the grand scheme of things with the ball in hand as he gave away 26 runs for a wicket from four overs.
As a result of that loss, Leicestershire still remain in the quest of finding their first win of the season.
