7:21 PM IST | Gujaratโs dominance over Lucknow continues in the Indian Premier League as the head-to-head record stands four-nil in favor of the Hardik Pandya-led unit now. They have won both fixtures against LSG this year and stand tall at the top of the points table with 16 points from 11 matches. With this 56-run comprehensive victory, the Titans steamroll two heavy-weight oppositions in a space of three nights.
Winning the toss Krunal had decided to bowl first and that didn't bother much to Hardik as he was okay to bat first. Openers- Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill offered a flying start to the home side and went on to rack 142 runs for the first wicket stand. This became the second-highest opening partnership in IPL 2023.
It was Saha who blew hot against the LSG bowlers and belted 22 runs off the fourth over from Mohsin Khan. He was just timing the ball and playing some proper cricketing shots. Gill was seen anchoring the innings at the start and switched gears with the passage of time. They piled up 100 runs in the 9th over and went berserk against both the pacers and leg spinners. At the cusp of reaching 150 runs, Avesh Khan drew the first blood after he trapped Wriddhiman Saha (81 off 43) in the deep.
Shubman Gill continued the assault from the other end with skipper Hardik Pandya (25 off 15) joining the party. The pitch turned out to be getting two-paced at the late end of the first innings and timing wasn't that easy for the batters. But somehow Miller (21* off 12) and Gill extracted some boundaries and ended up steering Gujarat to 227-2 after 20 overs. Gill (94* off 51) was unfortunate enough to miss his century by 6 runs.
Arriving for the chase, new opening combo for LSG- Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock started off with a blast. Despite a decent first over from Mohammed Shami, Hardik Pandya was on the receiving end of three successive fours. This is where the openers picked up momentum and lit up the Narendra Modi Stadium.
They brought up fifty runs within the fourth over and the scoreboard saw 72-0 at the end of the powerplay. As usual, Mohit Sharma was introduced late and he went on to damage the partnership. Mayers (48 off 32) was removed and it was the veteran behind the masterplan. Hooda came in at no.3 but was a no-show and got dismissed to Shami off a juicy full toss.
Some tidy overs in the middle phases from the trio of Rashid Khan, Noor Ahmad, and Mohit Sharma pushed the visitors to a point where they needed 107 runs to win from the last six overs. There was a need for spark from Marcus Stoinis and Nicholas Pooran today and both batters failed to glow. Both of them were caught at short third man by Mohammed Shami off widish deliveries from Mohit Sharma and Noor Ahmad respectively.
Ayush Badoni (21 off 11) was pushed in as the impact sub and he brought up some lusty blows at the cue end of the innings. Mohit Sharma snapped a couple of wickets in the penultimate over and it was Alzarri Joseph who was asked to bowl the ultimate over as a matter of regulation. Mohit ended up with a four-for and was the hero in the second innings for GT. Noor Ahmad was brilliant as well, being economical and grabbing a wicket. Shami and Rashid bagged a solitary piece as well.
