That's it from the first rain-hit and hopefully the last rain-hit encounter of the Indian Premier League 2023. Ninaad Dixit here taking your leave on behalf of my co-commentators Akshaya Krishna Polya, Arijit Kundu, and scorer Paras Yadav. Stay tuned for more cricketing action from around the world.
Arshdeep Singh: "I made an effort to be unpredictable. I was mixing it up because the wicket was good for batting. (After celebrating Anukul Roy's wicket) He was my under-19 cricket batchmate. I wanted to be aggressive because he started hitting me right away. Because he was acting aggressively, I was also acting aggressively. Players expect me to bowl yorkers, so I tried to surprise them by bowling bouncers.

Because there had been some rain, the wicket had become sticky, so I was taking advantage of the conditions. I'm having a good time, and the atmosphere in the dressing room is fantastic. Going forward, we'll try to keep having fun while also winning games for our team. (On Shikhar Dhawan) He has created a very positive environment amongst us, and we are enjoying it."
Shikhar Dhawan (Punjab Kings Captain): It's a great feeling to start the tournament with a win; we'll try to carry that confidence into the next game. I used those bowlers based on the situation; fortunately, we have plenty of bowlers on the team. I knew Raza would come in handy against the left-handers, so he provided us with three quality overs. There are also experienced bowlers in the side, such as Sam Curran and Arshdeep. I wanted to be both aggressive and smart. I was trying to hold one end because if I got out, someone else would. They are children who are still learning. We are all living our dreams, and we should be grateful. As a captain, I try to calm things down in the dugout and keep the players on the happier side."
Nitish Rana (Kolkata Knight Riders Captain): "I considered using Anukul with the ball but couldn't find the right situation. Russell's being unable to bowl at the death was not due to an injury. I just wanted to go with my five main bowlers. They batted well and read the wicket better than we did. If the rain hadn't come, anything could have happened. Unfortunately, Venkatesh was out as we were trying to get ahead on DLS. The shot was there. Overall, it was an enjoyable game. There are numerous takeaways from it. It's only the season's first game."

7:50 PM IST | The Punjab Kings win their opening encounter of the season by 7 runs thanks to the Duckworth Lewis Stern method. A lively performance by the bowling attack well led by Arshdeep Singh and a brilliant batting show from Bhanuka Rajapaksa (50), Shikhar Dhawan (40), Prabhsimran Singh (23 off 12) in the top order and then some fireworks down the order from Jitesh Sharma, Sikandar Raza, Sam Curran and Shahrukh Khan helps the Kings to put their first couple of points on the table.

A quick recap to match number 2 of the 2023 season. KKR won the toss and elected to bowl first putting a strong total of 191/5. Tim Southee picked up a couple of wickets but conceded 54 runs in his four overs. Umesh Yadav bowled economically and picked up a wicket alongside Varun Chakravarthy and an expensive Sunil Narine.

KKR didn't get a very good start losing 3 wickets in the powerplay including their first 2 in a single Arshdeep over when the left arm quick bowler got rid of the opener Mandeep Singh and number 3 Anukul Roy. Rahmanullah Gurbaz got a good start but was dismissed by Nathan Ellis in the 5th over.

Venkatesh Iyer was the impact player substitute for KKR and scored 34 in 28 balls getting in partnerships with Nitish Rana and Andre Russell. Newly appointed skipper Rana scored 24 in 17 balls adding 46 runs for the 4th wicket. Russell also got some good hits finishing at 35 in just 19 balls hitting 2 sixes and 3 fours.

Iyer was dismissed just before the rain interval in the 16th over but Shardul Thakur understood the assignment in the drizzle and smashed a six off his very first ball adding 8 runs in no time with Sunil Narine. The rain got heavier and the umpires got the players off the field. After waiting for around half an hour, it was confirmed that the match could not proceed further and KKR were left short of just 7 runs of the DLS par score.
7:46 PM IST| The umpires walk around the boundary ropes and enter the dressing room. They had a chat with skipper Nitish Rana. They even shook hands with one of the staff members of KKR. Was that a hint?
7:40 PM IST | It's still raining at Mohali. Raining cats and dogs. The stadium is getting emptied.
7:20 PM IST | KKR need 46 runs from 24 balls. But the rain is getting heavier now. If the match starts by 7:54 PM IST, there will be no overs reduction. Else there will be an over loss for every 4 minutes.
7:17 PM IST | UH OH! SAD NEWS! The covers are being rushed in on the field. The rain has become stronger! The players are coming off the field. The DLS par score at the moment for KKR is 153. They are 7 runs behind it.

6 SIXXXX!! Sunil Narine with the whack this time. Looked more like a pick-up shot and the ball flew over the vacant deep mid wicket region for a maximum. Shortened the length this time over the middle and leg. Narine waits and lofts it off the middle of the bat.
