Session Breakdown (Day 3)
Session 1: 23.1 Overs, 66 Runs, 10 wickets.
Session 2: 22.4 Overs, 104 Runs, 3 wickets
The session began with two Australian batters -Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne, at either end of the crease.
It was the Ashwin-Jadeja tag team that fell heavy on the Aussie batting order. The astute right-arm off-spinner petrified Travis Head in the first over of Day 3, and it was up to Steve Smith and Marnus Labuschagne to take the tally deep. But it wasn't an ordinary day for the middle-order duo as the two spinners edged past.
Ashwin removed Smith, leg before wicket, and then, Jadeja forced Marnus on the backfoot to yield a chop back onto the trunk. From Renshaw to Handscomb and Carey to Cummins, the middle and lower-middle order got wrapped up in haste. Wickets fell like nine pins and the Australian batting fell short to 113 runs in the third innings of the match.
With a lead of 1 run, 115 was the target for India and they already lost KL Rahul in a freakish fashion before Lunch.
The intent of the Indian batters seemed a bit unusual in the second session as Rohit Sharma took the role of a semi-aggressor. He counter-punched the spinners whenever there was a loosener and ensured two maximums before falling trapped via a run-out.
Cheteshwar Pujara and Virat Kohli had a brisk partnership between them and ticked the scoreboard around. Both the batters glued 30 runs together. Shreyas Iyer arrived in and went back after a few slogs. Eventually, KS Bharat and Cheteshwar Pujara joined hands in hand to steer India past the finishing line.
