Earlier in the game, Deccan Gladiators had won the toss and opted to bat first. Jason Roy and TKC (Tom Kohler-Cadmore) opened the innings for them. Akeal Hosein struck in the first over itself, dismissing TKC. Matiuallah Khan joined Akeal Hosein to dismantle the top order of the Gladiators. Suresh Raina shepherded the innings till the cue end of the innings and tinkered around with the other players going for the big hits.
David Wiese smoked a few sixes off Jordan Thompson but the latter had the last laugh in the same over. Odean Smith tonked around the park smashing 38 runs from 18 balls with 3 sixes and as many fours.
