Kusal Mendis (Galle Gladiators Skipper): " Yeah I think the toss was important as it was the same wicket like yesterday and the wicket was a bit slower. I think our fast bowlers used the slower balls pretty well. After losing early wickets Bandara and Fernando played very well."
Wanindu Hasaranga (Kandy Falcons Skipper): "I don't think the toss didn't play any part. We picked four wickets in the powerplay but leaked too many runs in the last overs. We lost three to four wickets in the middle overs against the spinners and that was the reason we lost the game."

Akshay | 18:44 IST: That’s the end of this game. It went down to the wire and the Galle Gladiators managed to hold their nerves to beat the Kandy Falcons by 12 runs. With this, the Falcons suffer their first loss of the Lanka Premier League 2022. The Gladiators grab their second win of the competition and beat the table-toppers to retain their third spot in the points table.
Chasing 154 was always going to be tricky on this surface. The Falcons didn’t have the best of starts as they lost a wicket inside the powerplay, with only 29 on the board. Pathum Nissanka tried hard from one end but lacked support from the other end as they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Nissanka’s scratchy knock of 29 came to an end in the 11th over.
The Gladiators bowled brilliantly in the middle phase and kept a lid on the scoring rate. As a result, the boundaries dried up and the required run rate crept up. Ashen Bandara (41*) and Chamika Karunaratne (32) lower down the order tried hard but it wasn’t enough as the Falcons eventually finished their innings on 141/7 to lose the game by 12 runs. Nuwan Thushara and Lakshan Sandakan bowled beautifully and picked up two wickets each for the Gladiators.
Earlier in the day, Galle Gladiators skipper Kusal Mendis won the toss and opted to bat first. The decision backfired as they lost early wickets and were reeling at 10/4 in the fourth over. Thanuka Dabare was joined by Nuwanidu Fernando and both led the recovery work. They were 23/4 at the end of the powerplay and the Falcons were right on top.
Dabare and Fernando took some time to settle in and started building a partnership. They were helped by some poor fielding from the Falcons. Their partnership helped them take the momentum away from the Falcons. The 113-run stand was broken when Fernando departed on 56. Dabare was dismissed on the last ball of the innings on 70 as his knock helped the Gladiators post 153 on the board. The Falcons picked up six wickets in total, with Carlos Brathwaite finishing with three.
