3:20 PM IST | That concludes the 4th encounter of Marsh Cup 2022-23 between Tasmania and South Australia from the Allan Border Field, Brisbane. Tasmania has started its Marsh campaign with a colossal victory over in-form South Australia. They win this encounter by 8 wickets and attain their first points of the tournament.

In pursuit of a below-par total of 221, the Tasmanian openers started on an electrifying note and polished off the scant chance South Australia had to win this encounter. They needed early breakthroughs to sustain in this fixture, but instead, Ben McDermott and Caleb Jewell orchestrated 75 of the powerplay without losing any scalps.

The South Australian bowlers kept on delivering faulty lengths and both the openers kept toiling them. The duo was constantly striking at a run rate of above 6 and as a result, Tasmania was 162/0 at the halfway stage. Soon after, Caleb Jewell scored the second-fastest Hundred by a Tasmanian in just 76 balls, just behind his teammate Matthew Wade (65 balls). The Southpaw demonstrated his versatility and thrashed bowlers all around the park; he finished with 126(97) under his belt, including a whopping 20 fours and 1 maximum.

Similarly, Ben McDermott also managed to score 71(90), including 8 fours and 2 maximum. The right-hander played second-fiddle to Jewell and kept rotating the strike before losing his wicket to Ben Manenti. Captain Jordan Silk, the next man in, also departed early for 7(6). Manenti was the only successful bowler for South Australia tonight and he finished with 2 scalps.

Earlier in the day, after winning the toss and electing to bat first, South Australia was bundled for 220 in 44.1 overs. The men in red were off to a sedate start as they only managed to orchestrate 48 by losing three top-order wickets.

South Australia was tottering at 43/3 when Alex Carey alongside Nathan McSweeney resurrected the innings. Carey was striking the ball and playing the aggressor while McSweeney adjusted to the conditions and played the second fiddle. The turning point in the game arrived when Carey hammered Riley Meredith for 16 runs in the 12th over. The over reads: 4,4,0,4,4,0.

The left-right duo of McSweeney and Carey stitched a partnership of 86 before Peter Siddle broke the stand. McSweeney, who was dropped on 24, scored 29 (58) before edging one to the keeper and that was soon followed by a massive wicket of Carey 59 (45), including 9 fours and 1 maximum. Since that, South Australia constantly kept losing wickets and was unsuccessful to build a partnership.

For Tasmania, Tom Rogers was the pick of the bowlers as he clinched a five-wicket haul and he completed his stint on 5/32. Riley Meredith, despite being a touch expensive, grabbed a couple of wickets (2/46) while Peter Siddle, Jarrod Freeman, and Tom Andrews attained a scalp each.

Ultimately, Tasmania wins this encounter by 8 wickets and will attain five points in the points table.
