Now that brings us to the end of our coverage for today. We had a tough day as a commentary team due to the lack of coverage early on during the match and we sincerely apologise for the lack of commentary at certain stages. In the commonwealth games, we won't be having a presentation ceremony as this is not an ICC tournament. The teams are also not wearing their original jerseys which they wear for an international game otherwise. The board logo in the T-shirt is also not there.
Arya- England didn’t get off to the greatest of starts as they lost Danielle Wyatt in the second over of the innings to Oshadi Ranasinghe. Sophia Dunkley started off well and scored 17 of 16 deliveries but was castled by a great delivery by Ranasinghe. Despite the two early wickets, England were still well and truly in the box seat and needed to bat sensibly to get over the line. Natalie Sciver also got off to a good start but perished to some good bowling by off-break bowler Inoka Ranaweera.
The Sri Lankan spinners kept them in the game as Ranaweera bagged the wicket of Amy Jones in quick time as England were reduced to 62/4. All of their experienced batters were back in the hut and it needed the young blood of Maia Bouchier and Alex Capsey to get them over the line. Capsey was exceptional with the bat and ensured that the target was achieved without too much fuss. She scored a delightful 44 and what was more important that she batted sensibly and according to the situation.
Maia Bouchier also gave her ample support at the other end and was composed during her unbeaten knock. She eventually remained unbeaten on 21 of 18 deliveries and smashed a boundary to win the match for England. Capsey was the top-scorer for England while Inoka Ranaweera was the pick of the Sri Lankan bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/29.
Arya- Sri Lankan skipper Chamari Athapaththu won the toss and opted to bat. It was a disastrous start for Sri Lanka as they lost Vishmi Gunaratne to Katherine Brunt on the very first delivery of the match. It was a great delivery from Brunt and Gunaratne missed a fullish-length delivery that tailed in just a bit. Athapaththu struck a couple of fours and shared a 33 runs stand with Hasini Perera. However, the run-rate wasn’t great in the powerplay.
Athapaththu and Perera were dismissed in quick intervals which never really allowed Sri Lanka to press on the accelerator after a relatively below-par start. The top scorer for Sri Lanka was Nilakshi de Silva. She was composed during her knock of 25 but it came in as many as 28 deliveries which meant that Sri Lanka was going nowhere. Kavisha Dilshari was dismissed after making 10 as wickets came thick and fast for the hosts.
For England, Sophie Ecclestone bowled brilliantly in the middle and towards the death and was the pick of the bowlers, finishing with figures of 3/25. None of the Sri Lankan batters could press on the accelerator and could eventually muster just 106 in their allotted 20 overs. It was certainly a below-par score and England would have fancied themselves to chase this down in a canter. While Ecceslestone bagged three, Wong and Freya Kemp bagged a couple each.
Arya- A convincing victory for the English women's team as they romp past Sri Lanka women by 5 wickets to notch up their first ever victory in the commonwealth games. They were tested a bit early on during the run-chase but Alex Capsey and Maia Bouchier ensured that the target was achieved without breaking too much of sweat in the end. Sri Lanka would be utterly disappointed with their batting performance and that is where they lost the game despite a fighting effort with the ball.
17.1 C Athapaththu to M Bouchier
4 Finished in style by Bouchier. Comes down the track and lifts this away towards the vacant wide long-on region and a one bounce boundary. She wanted to finish it off in style and does exactly that. Couldn't quite get to the pitch of the ball but her hands did the rest. A great shot to end the match, a convincing victory for England in the end.

16.6 I Ranaweera to A Capsey
W What a shame for Alex Capsey, she falls for 44 but a tremendous effort. She might not have finished the job but they are almost home. A great delivery from the left-arm spinner. Gets some grip and spin from the surface and she plays the wrong line. Comes down the track and tries to work it away towards the on side. Gets beaten all ends up, was squared up there and Sanjeewani behind the stumps does the rest. She had enough time there to whip the stumps there and inflict the stumping.
16.5 I Ranaweera to M Bouchier
1 Slower through the air, tossed up on the stumps and that has been nudged away with soft hands towards the square leg region for a single.
16.4 I Ranaweera to A Capsey
1 On a length around the off and middle-stump channel. Capsey turns it away towards the midwicket region and takes a single.

1 Misfield from the short fine leg fielder. On the leg stump and Bouchier clips it towards short fine and a misfield allows her to take a single.

4 Bouchier gets her first boundary. Was fractionally shorter on the stumps, Bouchier rocks back nd plays a flat-batted pull. The timing was great there and the it bisects the deep midwicket and the long-on fielder and off to the boundary ropes.

1 Capsey works away the tossed up delivery on the stumps down towards the deep midwicket region and rotates the strike.
