MoM: Lendl Simmons
In response, T&T openers- Evin Lewis and Lendl Simmons, provided them a solid start with a partnership of 81 runs for the first. It set the tone for the chase real nicely. Evin Lewis was outdone by Dember but Simmons kept going. He paced his innings nicely and notched up his personal milestone of a century. He demonstrated all his experience in this innings and made sure that T&T were in the driver’s seat all throughout the chase. He was nicely accompanied by Nicholas Pooran who was sent to the dug-out by the stunning catch taken by Larry Edwards at fine-leg. Soon after Pooran, Simmons got run-out and then Jason Mohammed too departed in a short span of time. A few wickets went down in a cluster, and made the game a bit tense. The rest of the work was done the by the captain, Pollard after a few blows in quick succession. He ensured that he propelled his team towards victory without any further damage with few lusty blows down the ground. Apart from Larry Edwards, none of the Volcanoes bowlers looked impressive. In the end, it turned out to be a comfortable chase for the T&T. All the players chipped in at different junctures of the game which resulted in the victory for them.
T&T Red won the toss earlier in the day and the bowlers proved their captain’s decision to be right. The innings of Windward Islands Volcanoes never seemed to be on track. They kept on losing wickets in quick successions. Every batsman struggled out there in the middle apart from Sunil Ambris, who went on to notch his half century and was adjudged LBW of Philip’s delivery at 66 and Cottoy, was the only other batsman who flowed some runs down the order. He held the fortress at the other end and guided the sinking ship of the Volcanoes to give their bowlers to stand a chance in the contest. He was caught behind by Ramdin on a Rampaul’s delivery at the far end of the innings, scoring 72 runs in 75 balls. Few other batsmen got the start but couldn’t capitalize on that and perished to the tight bowling from the bowlers of T&T Red. Philip and Jason were the picks amongst the bowler, scalping 3 wickets to his name whereas, Akeal Hosein got two wickets and Narine doing what he does the best, choking the runs from one end and creating the pressure. All in all it was a collective effort of the bowling unit to stall the Volcanoes batsmen at a below par total of 227 runs only which seemed to be too less with a power-packed batting line-up of the T&T.
Trinidad & Tobago has chased down the modicum target of 227 runs in 45.3 overs with 4 wickets remaining in hand. The writer of the show for T&T has to be Lendl Simmons who batted the Volcanoes out of the game. T&T moves to the top of the ladder with this victory.
