Akshay: So the Boxing Day has certainly lived up to its expectations. After a scintillating first day's play between India and Australia, the BBL game went down to the wire. It was lovely to bring you the updates from this game. Tata from me, Akshay Bhide and my colleagues Arjun Bhalla and Sourya Chowdhury. Do join us tomorrow for another cracking day of cricket. Bye bye.
Daniel Hughes, Player of the Match: A lot was going through my mind. But I just swung hard. Things went according to our plan. If they can get 193, so can we. Didn't bowl well though but it was a nice wicket. We wanted to take it deep. We enjoy each other's success.
Daniel Hughes is awarded the Man of the Match award for his sensational knock of 96 runs from 51 balls.
Akshay: They both put 125 for the 5th wicket in just 63 balls which turned the whole complexion of the match. Pooran brought up his fifty in just 16 balls, which is the fastest for Melbourne Stars in the BBL history. Maxwell too brought up his fifty and ensured that he stayed till the end and help his side finish on a high. 132 runs were scored in last 10 overs and a daunting task was laid ahead of the Sixers.
Akshay: Earlier in the day, Hughes won the toss and put Stars in to bat. The bowlers backed this decision as the Stars batsmen couldn’t get going. Fletcher failed again and his poor form continued. Cartwright too departed in the 6th over. They were struggling at 49/4 in the 9th over when Pooran joined Maxwell. They both started taking on the bowlers and put pressure back on the Sixers. It was like they were playing on a different surface.
Akshay: The chase began on a worst not for the Sixers as both Edwards and Vince departed for nought in quick succession. Philippe too departed after getting a start. Hughes was going strong but had no support from the other end. He brought up his half century but the rate required kept climbing. Christian and Holder hit some lusty blows but fell at the wrong time. It went down to the wire and the Sixers managed to keep their cool under pressure and defeated the Stars by one wicket.
Akshay: 67 runs were scored in last 5 overs when the game seem to be way far from the men in magenta. Daniel Hughes led the charge with an incredible 96 from 51 balls comprising of 6 fours and 7 sixes. Holder, Brathwaite provided some support but it was left to the skipper to chase down 20 from last over. Maxwell had to bowl the last as Coulter Nile was out injured. 16 were scored in first 3 balls but Hughes departed trying to finish the game with a six. But the veteran O'Keefe heaved across the line and missed it but it brushed his leg and it raced away for a boundary. Maxwell was livid with himself as the Sixers go past them.
Akshay: No words to describe this match folks. Been a remarkable comeback from the Sixers and they beat Stars by 1 wicket with 1 ball left. And Arjun will be livid with himself because once again, his predictions have gone wrong.
Sourya: You cannot script that last over, drama, twists, turns, bravery, mistakes ,heroism, agony and ecstasy, everything there.
19.5 Glenn Maxwell to Steve OKeefe
4 FOUR and the game is over. What a game, we have witnessed today. Unbelievable and unthoughtful!! A surreal play of 40 overs it has been. Low full toss, Steve OKeefe swings his bat across the line and gets a faint little edge, the ball runs past the keeper to fine leg for four runs to finish the game.
Akshay: What have you done Daniel Hughes? Goes for a glory shot and perishes. But an incredible innings from the skipper.
Sourya: This is what T20 drama is all about. He just didn't time it well enough despite it being in his slot, caught in the boundary. Great knock from Hughes, one most doff his hat to him.
19.4 Glenn Maxwell to Daniel Hughes
W WICKETT!!!! Another twist in the nail-bitter. Hughes departs on well made 96. full in the slot for Hughes again as he backs away to smoke it over the boundary but holds out at deep square leg and
Akshay: Hughes on 96 and 4 to win the game. I'm backing him to get a hundred here.
Sourya: What a time to bowl a full-toss.
19.3 Glenn Maxwell to Daniel Hughes
6 Another maximum! Full toss on to Hughes who backs away and powered it all the way over the deep square leg region where the fielder runs across but he dives over the line and that goes all the way for a maximum.
