Sri Lanka batter Avishka Fernando tests positive for Covid, doubtful for Zimbabwe series

Avishka Fernando, the man in form for Sri Lanka has tested positive for Covid-19 and hence would most likely miss the three-match ODI series against a touring Zimbabwe side. The series is set to begin from January 16 and the probable players for the Sri Lanka squad for that series have already entered the bubble, although the squad is still not announced. Zimbabwe however reached Sri Lanka on Sunday and would be stationed at Kandy, the place where the three-match series would be played at the Pallekele Stadium. According to Sri Lanka Cricket's medical staff, Fernando has received three vaccinations. The booster dose, however, was administered less than two weeks ago. Only Fernando has returned a positive test so far among all the players tested. Since the ban has been lifted from the trio of Kusal Mendis, Niroshan Dickwella, and Danushka Gunathilaka, the absence of Fernando might not trouble the team as much as it would have otherwise. In his last two games in the LPL 2021, Fernando struck 100 off 64, and 63 off 41 balls. The three ODIs would be part of the CWC Super League and Sri Lanka currently are sixth on its points table after 15 games. Zimbabwe on the other hand are at the bottom in the 13 team league with only two wins from nine games. Hence the three matches are really important for both the teams. The top eight teams qualify directly for the 2023 ODI World Cup in India. The other five would go into a qualifier where they will face five associate nations and the top two from there will make the World Cup.

LPL Final | Handed three losses in a row, Jaffna rise up to win the one game that mattered

After suffering three heavy defeats against Galle Gladiators in the 2021 edition of the Lanka Premier League, Jaffna Kings turned up when it mattered the most to successfully defend the title on Thursday, 23 December. A repeat of last year’s final fixture, this match was expected to be close, however, Kings, after choosing to bat first, blew Gladiators away with a thoroughly dominating performance. The top three fired in their individual capacities to rake up 201 runs in the first innings, setting Kings for a big win. However, the win took a little more time to arrive than expected with Danushka Gunathilaka counter attacking from word go. Once Gunathilaka was trapped by Wanindu Hasaranga, Gladiators failed to put up partnerships and keep the scoreboard in control. The de Silva brothers - Wanindu and Chaturanga were the picks among the bowlers picking up two wickets each conceding just 45 runs between them in seven overs. Kings had a lot of energy in the field as well, stark opposite to Galle Gladiators who dropped catches, misfielded to give loads of extra runs in the first innings. Conversely, the tremendous efforts in the field lifted up the spirits of the Kings, winning the game by 23 runs.

Lanka Premier League Final | Jaffna top three shine again; post 202 as target

The top three of the Jaffna Kings were at it again, combining their efforts to post a huge total in the finals of the Lanka Premier League on Thursday, 23 December. Choosing to bat first after winning the toss, the opening duo of Avishka Fernando and Rahmanullah Gurbaz wasted no time and put up a partnership of 50 runs within the first five overs. After Gurbaz was dismissed in the last over of the powerplay, man in form Tom Kohler-Cadmore got into the act and scored a splendid half-century in 38 balls to put Jaffna in charge. There were two phases of play for the Jaffna Kings in this game, one where the runs flew plentifully while Fernando was batting and then the one without him where Galle Gladiators did very well to squeeze a fight in. However, after an initial burst, Kohler-Cadmore showed good composure and took Jaffna to a safe score along with Shoaib Malik who scored 23 runs off 11 balls before getting out in the 19th over to Mohammad Amir. The bowling department did well in the second half of the innings. Medium-pacer Nuwan Thushara mixed his lengths and pace well to put a cap on the run flow. While his figures read 4-0-33-1, there were absolutely no doubters that he should have gotten more wickets. However, as has been the case throughout the day, Gladiators' fielding let them down. The final over of the innings bore 19 runs for Jaffna Kings after Gladiators were forced to bowl part-timer Dhananjaya Lakshan in the final over. Thisara Perera capitalised the last over and scored 19 off 7 balls. At the end of the 20 overs, Jaffna put on 201 runs losing 3 wickets.

Lanka Premier League Final | Jaffna Kings start strong in powerplay

The Jaffna Kings thrashed their way to xx runs inside the powerplay against team-to-beat Galle Gladiators in the final of Lanka Premier League on Thursday, 23 December. In a repeat of last edition’s final, Kings’ after winning the toss chose to bat first. With some luck in their favour, both openers - Avishka Fernando and Rahmanullah Gurbaz punished the pace bowlers for bowling wayward lengths. It’s not like the bowlers did not bowl good deliveries, but the edges seemed to fly by the keeper. Some really shoddy display in the field added to the misery of the Gladiators as Jaffna raked up 56 runs in the first five overs. The final over of the powerplay saw the first spinner in action and resulted in a wicket straightaway as Gurbaz looked to take on former England international Samit Patel. In an attempt to clear long on, Gurbaz failed to time the ball properly was was caught by Kusal Mendis. At the end of the powerplay Kings were bating on 61 for the loss of 1 wicket.

SL vs BAN | Shakib Al Hasan overtakes Shahid Afridi to become leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan became the leading wicket-taker in the history of T20 World Cups as he dismissed Pathum Nissanka of Sri Lanka in the 15th match of the T20 World Cup 2021. Tied at 39 wickets after picking four wickets against Papua New Guinea, Shakib was brought in by the skipper Mahmudullah in the powerplay itself. But then he gave away five runs without picking any wicket. But on his second coming in the ninth over, not only did Shakib break a dangerous-looking 69 run stand between Nissnaka and Charith Asalanka but in the same over also removed another Sri Lankan batter in Avishka Fernando for nought to bring the Tigers back into the contest. So far, Shakib has taken 11 wickets in this tournament. The Bangladesh side started the defence of their 171 runs in a geat style as World Cup debutant Nasum Ahmed removed experienced Sri Lanka opener, Kusal Perera, at the team score of only two runs in the very first over. But then Nissnaka and Asalanka brought the Lankan Lions back in the game with a 69 run stand in just 45 balls. At the time of writing this, the Sri Lankan team were struggling at 81-4 in the 11th over, needing 91 runs in 45 balls.

ICC World T20 2021 | Former champions Sri Lanka prepare for tough test against Namibia

ICC World T20 2021 | Former champions Sri Lanka prepare for tough test against Namibia

Former World Champions Sri Lanka start their campaign against Associate nation Namibia in the most un-world champion like manner, on October 18 in the Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi. It has been a steep fall for Sri Lanka since their 2014 campaign where they comprehensively defeated India in the finals. A squad that once housed the likes of Kumar Sangakarra, Tillakaratne Dilshan and Lasith Malinga among others now does not have a single world beater in their squad. After a string of bad patches in the last couple of years, Sri Lanka now find themselves unable to start the tournament at the Super 12 stage with bigwigs like Indian and England. They now have to play the First Round or the qualifying round and defeat their competition in Namibia, Ireland and the Netherlands to qualify into the Super 12s. While a squad of Sri Lanka’s stature should not have a problem, but this is the World Cup and weirder things have happened. Namibia come into the tournament as one of the strongest associate teams and are well capable of punching above their weight. This is going to be their first appearance in an ICC World Cup after a wait of 18 years. Coming into the tournament, they have form by their side, and have won six out of their last six games. David Wiese, once an able member of the South African squad, now vies his trade with their African neighbours. He is well travelled and understands what is required off a stage like this. He was among wickets in this year’s Caribbean Premier League and could well be the deciding factor in this game. Match Details Sri Lanka vs Namibia Match Number - 4 Date & Time - 18 October, 7:30 PM IST (6 PM local) Venue - Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi Broadcast & Stream - Star Sports network, Disney+Hotstar Pitch Report If the Indian Premier League is anything to go by, Abu Dhabi can turn out to be one of the most inconsequential pitches in the tournament. It has generally favoured the spinners and has produced uneven bounce in the latter overs. Even though this is going to be an evening game, teams, if they win the toss, should opt to bat first. Players to watch out for Sri Lanka Wainindu Hasaranga Don’t be fooled by his off form in the Indian Premier League, Abu Dhabi might bring the best out of Hasaranga. Hasaranga’s bowling attributes might be of mighty use in Abu Dhabi. His claim to fame has been his ability to attack the stumps from a very low release point which allows him to hit the stumps more often than not. This attribute might be of high demand in a track like Abu Dhabi and Hasaranga could be the most important asset that SL have. Namibia Craig Williams The Namibia batting order revolves around the capability of Craig Williams and his ability to play the role of an anchor. He has scored four half-centuries in his last five T20 games and it would not be an understatement to say that he could make or break the fortunes of Namibia tomorrow. Sri Lanka Probable XI Dinesh Chandimal (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Kusal Perera, Avishka Fernando, Dhananjaya de Silva, Charith Asalanka, Dasun Shanaka (c), Chamika Karunaratne, Wanindu Hasaranga, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana Namibia Probable XI Stephan Baard, Zane Green (wk), Craig Williams, Gerhard Erasmus (c), David Wiese, JJ Smit, Pikky Ya France, Jan Frylinck, Ben Shikongo, Bernard Scholtz, Michael van Lingen CE Fantasy XI Dinesh Chandimal, Kusal Perera, Craig Williams, Gerhard Erasmus, Avishka Fernando (c), David Wiese (vc), Wainindu Hasaranga, JJ Smit, Chamika Karunaratne, Dushmantha Chameera, Maheesh Theekshana
