ENG W vs IND W: With Mithali fit to go, Shikha Pandey backs fearless India to produce positive results

The Indian Women team would not be deprived of their skipper Mithali Raj in their attempt of attaining a consolation win in an already lost ODI series when they take the field in New Road Worcester. BCCI confirmed in a tweet that, Mithali, who did not take the field after injuring her shoulder while batting, is for the 3rd ODI which would also be her last game on the tour as the dynamic batter is not part of the T20I set-up. "Captain @M_Raj03 has recovered and is training with the girls as we prepare for the 3rd WODI tomorrow here at New Road, Worcester," the BCCI tweeted. The 38-year-old would also have another shot at becoming the highest run-scorer in international cricket by overtaking former England skipper Charlotte Edwards. Mithali, with 10,262 runs in all three formats combined is just 12 runs away from overtaking Edwards’ 10,273. The Indian team would be looking to go all out in the last game with nothing to lose scenario and fast bowler Shikha Pandey underscored the same point while speaking in the pre-match press conference. “We want to be going ahead and play a fearless brand of cricket, and we're working towards it. This is kind of a build-up to the World Cup next year, and in the games ahead we will have a positive attitude and we will look to score runs for the team to win,” said Pandey, who wicked two wickets in the second ODI and was one of the reasons as to why India fought deep in that game. People were expecting newcomer wicket-keeper Indrani Roy to get a game in the third ODI based on her batting abilities. But it seems that the team would prefer Taniya Bhatia’s wicket-keeping skills more. “Taniya standing up to the stumps made a huge difference. Taniya is doing a great job, and it is about responding to the situation on the field,” Shikha said about the Chandigarh born.

ENG W vs IND W | 3rd ODI: With nothing to lose, India Women look to be brave and fearless

ENG W vs IND W | 3rd ODI: With nothing to lose, India Women look to be brave and fearless

The Indian Women team did improve a bit in terms of their approach towards the ODI game in the second of the three-match series against England Women but still ended up losing the match, courtesy of some brilliant character shown by young Sophia Dunkley with the bat. She was the prime reason to rob away the Indian eves of a potential victory, mainly owed to them by their bowlers. While the bowling did improve a bit, it is the batting that is slacking and continued to do so in the second game as well. Necessary changes were made with Jemimah Rodriguez taking Punam Raut’s place at the top of the order and Sneh Rana coming in for Pooja Vatsrakar. However, what didn’t go well was another Indian collapse in the middle order after a relatively better top-order performance. Asking for too many changes could be a problem, but this Indian team could really afford to be a bit realistic in the sense that it has already lost the series. Punam Raut as a batter is way better and can be the real anchor. Whether or not she can drop anchor is a question that has not been answered yet. However, India can really do with her at number three instead of Jemimah because of two things mainly. First, she has an impressive record and was carrying form on this England tour. Secondly, Rodriguez, who was fitted into her place, really doesn’t solve the jigsaw puzzle in the sense that she is out of form and hence equally slow, if not more. The only way India seem to solve this problem is by either taking Raut to open with Shafali Verma and playing Smriti Mandhana at three to keep up the tempo or by involving young Indrani Roy as the wicket-keeper batter in the team and playing her at number three or opener and removing Raut altogether from the setup. Whether or not India tries that combination is a thing of deliberation. As far s the English unit is concerned, it is running like a well-oiled machine with somebody or the other raising its hand to deliver in the moment of crisis. Be it Tammy Beaumont and Nat Sciver in the first game or Dunkley and Katharine Brunt in the second. However, now since the series is won, England could really afford to give the reserve players a chance. England Women vs India Women: Match Details Match Number- 3rd ODI Date and Time: 03 July 2021, 03:00 pm IST, 09:30 am GMT, 10:30 am Local Venue: New Road, Worcester Broadcast and Live Stream in India: Sony Sports Network and Sony LIV Pitch Report As of now, only five Women ODIs have been played on this ground, the latest of which was played in 2019. In those five games, the team batting first have won four games, giving a fair bit of idea about the nature of the wicket. The home ground of Worcester county is known to9 slow down as the game progresses. The average first inning score of 203 also suggests that it is tough to score runs on this ground. The average second innings score is just 175. Weather Forecast and Toss The weather forecast of Worcester might not be pleasing news for cricket lovers as there are forecasts of thunderstorms and the chances of rain are between 35-51% from 10 am to 5 pm, mostly the entire duration of the game. The day would remain cloudy and chilly with temperatures ranging between 14-15 degrees celsius. In such conditions, any team winning the toss would choose to field first. Team News England Women The likes of Brunt and Anya Shrubsole could take time off to prepare for the upcoming T20I series and so can the batters like Beaumont and Sciver who have got a good hit so far. The team can go as far as resting Dunbkley as well if they feel like it. With all these changes, those who have been part of the team but haven’t got an opportunity can get a go as well. Freya Davies, Mady Villiers and Emily Arlott can take the places of Brunt, Shrubsole and Sophie Ecclestone while the likes of Fran Wilson can be tries in the middle order. Probable XI Lauren Winfield Hill, Fran Wilson, Heather Knight (c), Natalie Sciver, Amy Ellen Jones (wk), Sophia Dunkley, Emily Arlott, Sarah Glenn, Mady Villiers, Freya Davies, Kate Cross India Women The Indian team could really do with the change in the wicketkeeper. Not because of the wicket-keeping skills because Taniya Bhatia is probably the best behind the stumps. However, her batting is doing no favours to the team at all and Indrani, sitting in the room in probably the form of her life is going no good at all for her or the team. Thus she must be tried in this game where is losing doesn’t even matter. The rest of the team can remain unchanged if it wishes to. However, Mithali carried an injury in the last game and didn’t take the field. But with two days’ rest, most hopefully she would have recovered. And if not, Raut could take her place as easily as possible. Probable XI Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Mithali Raj (c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Indrani Roy(wk), Shikha Pandey, Jhulan Goswami, Poonam Yadav Dream XI and Fantasy XI team Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Mithali Raj (c), Heather Knight, Natalie Sciver, Amy Ellen Jones (wk), Sophia Dunkley (vc), Sneh Rana, Kate Cross, Jhulan Goswami, Poonam Yadav

ENG W vs IND W | 1st ODI: After Test success, India Women begin preparatory journey to World Cup 2022

The Indian Women’s team comeback draw in one-off Tests at Bristol last week was dreamy and unbelievable in a way that it pumped the entire unit. The fact that heroes of that comeback were previously unheard of made it even more surreal. Sneh Rana and Taniya Bhatia shone in the one-off Tests to frustrate the English side. The two teams would meet in Bristol once again but with a change in the format of the game. With the first of the three ODIs being played on Sunday, June 27. Both the teams, Finalists from the last ODI World Cup in 2017, would look to strengthen their teams by testing all sorts of combinations in the penultimate year for the 2022 World Cup in New Zealand. This test of the bench strength and finding of the right combinations forms the basis of the series as two equally poised opponents take on each other. The head to head record of the teams are even as well with English Women winning 37 and India Women 30 out of the 67 completed games while two games ended in no results. As far as recent results are concerned, India lead 4-2 in the last six completed ODI games. But those games were played in India, the Indian team whoever would be looking to avenge their narrow 9 runs ODI World Cup Final loss in Lord’s in 2017 when the two teams last met in an ODI in England. England Women vs India Women: Match Details Date and Time: June 27, 2021, 03:00 pm IST, 09: am GMT, 10:30 am Local Venue: County Ground, Bristol Live Stream and Broadcast: SONY LIV and Sony Sports Network Pitch Report As was evident in the Tets match, the Bristol ground does offer some swing early on and if pitched in the right areas and given a lot of revolutions, the bowl would turn as well, later on in the day. Run scoring is not a problem on the ground if time is spent in the middle as was shown by the batters of both sides. Weather and Toss Light rain showers and moderate breeze have been forecasted for Sunday in Bristol with the percentage of rainfall increasing as the day progresses. In such conditions, any team winning the toss would look to bowl first for two obvious reasons. Firstly to utilise the swing on offer and secondly to keep the Duckworth Lewis and Stern system in their favour. Team News England Women The England Women squad remained almost the same as the one that played the One-off Test with the inclusion of Sarah Glenn and Freya Davies. Most hopefully, Glenn alongside Sophia Dunkley would make it in the XI. For Dunkley, if she plays, it would be her maiden ODI outing. Probable XI Tammy Beaumont, Lauren Winfield-Hill, Heather Knight (c), Nat Sciver (vice-captain), Sophia Dunkley, Amy Jones (wk), Sarah Glenn, Katherine Brunt, Anya Shrubsole, Freya Davies, Sophie Ecclestone India Women The Indian side’s problem of the opening stand has now been solved with Shafali Verma showcasing her potential in the one-off Test. With the number three, four and five spots retained the experienced trio of Punam Raut, Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur, it would be impossible for Jemimah Rodriguez and Priya Punia to find a place in the side. To keep Sneh would be impossible after her heroics and hence only one among Punam Yadav and Ekta Bisht would be able to make it to the squad as a proper spinner if India would go with three spinner and two pacers squad. But in case it decides to continue the three pacers attack, then the same team that played in the Test might be seen playing here. With chances of rain and the weather being breezy, it is more likely that India would prefer a three pacers attack and the team that played in the Test would play in the ODI too. Probable XI Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Punam Raut, Mithali Raj (c), Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, Sneh Rana, Taniya Bhatia (wk), Pooja Vastrakar, Shikha Pandey, Jhulan Goswami Dream XI / Fantasy XI Team Shafali Verma, Smriti Mandhana, Heather Knight, Mithali Raj, Sophia Dunkley, Deepti Sharma, Amy Jones (wk), Sneh Rana, Anya Shrubsole, Jhulan Goswami, Sophie Ecclestone

Indian Women's team go out for fun outing in Bristol ahead of white ball leg against England

The Indian Women’s cricket team who are currently in Bristol preparing for the white-ball leg of their England tour had a fun outing in Bristol on Friday before they go back to the field to fight it out in a three-match ODI series and as many T20I’s. The team which will be led by flamboyant batter Harmanpreet Kaur stepped out of their hotel to have a nice outing across Bristol. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) took to their social media handles and shared pictures of the girls enjoying each other’s company. They went on a shopping spree and also ate together. "#TeamIndia’s day out in Bristol. The girls stepped out for a team outing after the Test to recharge before the white-ball leg of the Tour begins. Plenty of fun and some cool dance moves along the way," the BCCI posted on Twitter. The Women in Blue will face hosts England in a three-match ODI and T20I series starting from June 27. The final match of the series will be played on 15th July. Bristol, Taunton, Worcester, Northampton, Hove and Chelmsford will host the six white-ball games. Starting off the tour with a one-off Test, India managed to eke out a draw after being asked to follow on. Shafali Verma was the star of the match as he scored 96 in the first innings and followed it up with another half-century in the second essay. India couldn’t quite capitalise on the terrific partnership between Shafali and Smriti Mandhana in the first innings and was bowled out for 231. After being asked to follow on. India looked dead and buried after losing 8 wickets but an exemplary performance from Sneh Rana and Taniya Bhatia ensured India managed to draw the Test match in the end. The duo shared an unbeaten 104 runs stand to help India salvage a draw.

ENG W vs IND W | One-off Test: Determined Sneh Rana, sturdy Taniya Bhatia pull India out of the jaws of defeat

The fall of Shikha Pandey’s wicket in the 90th over of the India Women innings while following on was thought to be the demolition of the last bridge between draw an English victory. More than 41 overs were to be bowled, India were 240-8 and had a slight lead of just 75 runs with two women in the middle who failed miserably in the first innings. It was more than enough for the fans and even to an extent for players to lose belief. But there was something about the white bandana, hair falling sideways and a Dhoni-like helmet that Sneh Rana was spotting. They were the distractions for people who weren’t able to see the determination in her eyes and the poise on her face, slightly hidden in that occasional nonchalant smile that was on display throughout her innings. Joining her was the wicketkeeper batter in Taniya Bhatia, batting at number 10, probably for the first time in her international career. After getting out for a duck in the first innings, she got the flak from the media and her team, so much so that bowlers like Pooja Vastrakar and Shikha were sent ahead of her. There was a point to prove and she knew very well that the only way she could do it was by saving the game, which looked like a difficult probability by all means. Rana at that point was batting at 27 and she had not had a good game with the bat either, falling for just 2 in her debut Test innings. When they started to settle down, it was taken to be a small halt in English victory till the new ball arrived. Well, the new ball did arrive and Katherine Brunt, Anya Shrubsole, Natalie Sciver and Sophie Ecclestone, all tried their level best, but couldn’t break the partnership between Rana and Bhatia. After the first 25 overs of resistance, when the Indian lead crossed the 100 run mark and the 27-year-old Rana, who dedicated her four-wicket haul in the first innings to her deceased father, notched up her maiden fifty in the debut Test, Bhatia started to open up as well. The two ladies played exquisite drives, mostly punching off the backfoot. Both of them started searching for the individual milestone as, before the amicable end of the play was reached by the two teams mutually, Bhatia was just six runs short of becoming the fourth Indian woman to hit a half-century on Test debut in this game. Prior to her, Rana, Shafali Verma and Deepti Sharma achieved the feat. The thumping four by Rana, which she hit by stepping out of her crease and lifting the bowl towards the square leg boundary with a ferocious jab, was in a way, a stamp of authority of her attitude in the entire second innings. With Inda at 344-8, players shook hands as umpires called it a day on the fourth and last day of the only Test of the tour. India managed to draw the game and also find two unlikely heroes in Rana and the 23-year-old Bhatia. The two of them added 104 runs unbeaten for the ninth wicket, which was only three short of being the highest ninth-wicket partnership in Women's Test history. Earlier in the day, the guests started cautiously at their overnight score of 83-1 with Verma and Deepti at the crease. However, having added just 16 runs to the team and nine-run to her individual total, the 17-year-old Verma repeated the same mistake as the one she had committed in the first innings. She hit a juicy full toss over mid-on and Brunt took a brilliant catch running in from long-on to dismiss her of the bowling of Ecclestone. Deepti took charge after Verma and with Punam Raut as her partner, almost saw off the entire first session without any damage but for the fifth ball of the last over before lunch. In a moment of brain fade, instead of negotiating the last two balls to lunch, she went for a mad slog sweep and missed it, which in turn hit the woodwork behind her. She was also removed by Ecclestone, but not before picking up her maiden Test fifty in only her debut Test match. Post lunch, India’s wickets started falling at a regular interval with experienced campaigners like skipper Mitahli Raj and vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur getting out cheaply. Raut followed them as well. It was then that Rana started building small partnerships, first with Pooja Vastrakar, then with Shikha and eventually Bhatia to salvage a draw for her team. Reacting to the win and talking about her brilliant performance, Rana said, “It was important to put up a partnership, that's what happened with Shikha and Taniya. It feels great to contribute to the team.” “An emotional moment for me, being picked for the national team after 5 years, I'm very happy. I have never played here before, this knock will give me plenty of confidence going into the white-ball games,” she added. Shafali Verma, for her brilliant performance with the bat, in which she aggregated 159 runs in the entire game, was adjudged Man of the Match. The two teams would now engage in a three-match ODI series beginning with the first ODI on June 27 at the same ground in Bristol.
