Had mental-health issues & have sought support to resolve them myself: Veda Krishnamurthy

India women’s team player Veda Krishnamurthy suffered a huge loss after her mother and sister succumbed to Covid-19. The Indian cricketer in a chat with ESPNCricinfo said that she was completely destroyed and all the other family members were broken. “I’m a big believer in what destiny holds for you, but I really hoped that my sister would come back home. When she didn’t, I was completely destroyed. All of us were broken to pieces,” Krishnamurthy told ESPNcricinfo’. “…I still had to put up a brave face for the rest of the family. What I had to do in those testing couple of weeks was learn to tune myself out of my grief. But it keeps coming back to haunt you,” she said. The middle-order batter revealed that she has herself struggled with mental health issues. Veda was also removed from the list of centrally contracted players for 2020-21. Besides Veda, who was in Grade C last year, Ekta Bisht (Grade B), Anuja Patil and D. Hemlatha (both Grade C) have also been excluded. “A lot of people who are playing cricket currently know what mental health is, but it is also important to accept that if the system is not doing anything to offer you mental-health assistance, you can and must find the support for yourself if you can afford it,” she said. “I’ve had mental-health issues and I’ve sought support to resolve them myself,” she added. Veda has played 48 ODIs and 76 T20Is for the team but unfortunately won’t be travelling to the UK with the team. India are slated o play a one-off Test against England and three ODIs and as many T20Is on the tour.

BCCI dismisses claims of non-payment to four Women cricketers

BCCI dismisses claims of non-payment to four Women cricketers

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed the reports suggesting that four Indian Women cricketers, previously on the central contracts list have not been paid for eight months, the period in which the entire team was without a retainer contract. "This is absolutely false. Every player is paid in accordance with the terms of the contract with the BCCI,” ANI quoted a board official on the conditions of anonymity. A report in United Kingdom’s daily The Telegraph claimed on May 25 that four Indian players i.e. Veda Krishnamurthy, Hemalatha Dayalan, Anuja Patil and Ekta Bisht, who have not been named in BCCI’s 2021-22 central contract list for India Women, would not be paid their salaries from October 2020 to May 2021. The basis for the claim was the fact that it was the same period in which the Indian Women’s contract had ended and BCCI renewed it only in May this year. Since the renewed contract didn’t feature these players’ name and neither were they part of the only series the team played during this period, hence they would receive no payment from BCCI. Refuting these claims, the BCCI official said, “The payments have been made for the contracted period. The claim made in the story essentially assumes that a contract existed for almost eight months for which they would not be paid. This is incorrect, and I can only conclude that this is on the back of incorrect advice.” "If a contract ended in September 2020 and the payments have been made in relation to that contract, it is wrong to imply otherwise," he added. The Indian Women are currently under quarantine in Mumbai preparing for their tour of England, for which they will leave with the Men’s team on June 2.

Dropped from central contract in May, 4 India players won't be paid salary for last 7 months

Dropped from central contract in May, 4 India players won't be paid salary for last 7 months

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), after being humiliated for not paying the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 prize money to the Indian Women finally asked the team members to send in their invoices for the prize money as well as to get the amount of the central contract for 2020-21. However, this has sprung yet another controversy. The UK Telegraph reported that the women cricketers who have not got retainer contracts this year, would not be paid the retainer fees from October to May, the period for which the central contract was not renewed till the time the new contracts came in place. “Four players who recently lost their central contracts will receive no payment for their work between October last year and May this year. This means that during a seven-and-a-half month period those four players — Ekta Bisht, Dayalan Hemalatha, Veda Krishnamurthy and Anuja Patil — were unable to seek alternative employment or income, and yet will be paid only match fees and tour allowances,” the report by Isabelle Westbury said. Krishnamurthy, who lost her mother and elder sister to Covid-19 in a span of just 15 days, was among the four players omitted from the BCCI’s central contracts which were announced earlier this month. The report further scrutinises the BCCI pay system in which the Indian players, domestic and international have to fill in an invoice for any prize money, match fees or daily allowances and the sum specified in their retainers which are paid quarterly. The BCCI has also been questioned on its stance for asking the Indian Women’s team members of the T20 World Cup to fill just over $25,500 in their invoice for the prize money. According to the math done for the total prize money won by an individual member of the team, each Women’s team member is entitled to nearly $37,000. “Not only should India’s women have received $500,000 for finishing runners-up, but they should also have received $15,000 per group stage win. This would have meant total winnings of $560,000 (Rs 4.08 crore), as India’s women won four group-stage matches. Split equally between the 15-woman squad which competed in that tournament, each player should therefore receive in excess of $37,000,” the report said. It now puts the focus on the fact as to where have more than $175,000 (Rs 1.27 Crores) unaccounted money gone? It is instances like these that are putting the board under the scanner The Indian Women’s team is currently quarantining in Mumbai from where they would leave for England on June 2 for a multi-format series beginning with the one-off Tests in Bristol from June 16.

Shafali Verma moves up, Richa Ghosh bags first deal as Veda Krishnamurthy is snubbed from BCCI central contracts

Richa Ghosh and Shafali Verma two of the youngest Indian Women’s team members made headlines as the Board of Control for Cricket in India announced the Annual Player Contracts. While 17-year-old Verma moved to Category B from her previous contract under Category C the lowest, Ghosh from Silligusri bagged her first-ever central contract by BCCI. Verma has recently been picked in India Women's squad in all formats for England tour. The Senior Women have been offered the central contract for the period from October 2020 to September 2021. The three all-format players in T20I skipper Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandana and Poonam Yadav retained their top category spots and remained the only three in Category A of the contract list. Apart from Verma, Rajeshwari Gayakwad and Punam Raut have climbed the ladder from Category C to B as well. Senior players like Mitali Raj and Jhulan Goswami have retained their Category B spots. Although the remuneration of each category remains the same at Rs 50 Lakh, 30 Lakh and 10 Lakh for A, B and C category, the number of contracted players has gone down from 22 to last year to just 19 this year. Key players to miss out on the contract are Veda Krishnamurthy, Ekta Bish, D Hemlatha and Anuja Patil. Veda lost her mother and elder sister to Covid-19 this year. Among those snubbed from the contracts, Ekta Bisht is the only one in Team India’s squad for England tour. While Manasi Joshi is the only player who is neither injured nor part of the Indian squad even after bagging a Category C contract. Grade A [INR 50 Lakh]: Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Poonam Yadav Grade B [INR 30 Lakh]: Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Deepti Sharma, Punam Raut, Rajeshwari Gayakwad, Shafali Verma, Radha Yadav, Shikha Pandey, Taniya Bhatia, Jemimah Rodrigues Grade C [INR 10 Lakh]: Mansi Joshi, Arundhati Reddy, Pooja Vastrakar, Harleen Deol, Priya Punia, Richa Ghosh

After Lisa Sthalekar’s criticism of BCCI, Veda Krishnamurthy tweets to thank Jay Shah and board

India Women’s player Veda Krishnamurthy thanked the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Honorary Secretary Jay Shah and the board for supporting her through torrid times in which she lost her mother and elder sister to Covid-19 within a span of 15 days. “Have been tough last month for me and family and I’d like to sincerely thank the @BCCI & Mr @jayshah sir for calling me few days back and extending support in these unprecedented times. Many thanks sir @BCCIWomen,” Veda tweeted on My 18. Earlier when the India team was announced for the England tour and Veda, 28, was not picked, former Australia cricketer Lisa Sthalekar tweeted a scathing criticism of the Indian board saying that it did not how to care for its contracted player in her times of grief. Veda, a batting all-rounder, who has played 48 ODIs and 76 T20is wasn’t picked for India Women’s tour of England when the team was announced on May 14. Her last appearance for India dates back to the team’s crushing defeat in the Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 Final against hosts Australia.

Lisa Sthalekar slams BCCI on giving cold shoulder to Veda Krishnamurthy

Former India spinner Ramesh Powar returned as the coach of the women’s team and his appointment was followed by the squad selection for England tour which saw a couple of players getting maiden India call-ups while some prominent names were omitted and among these was Veda Krishnamurthy. The decision certainly didn’t go really well with former Australia women’s cricketer Lisa Sthalekar and she took a dig at the BCCI on the cold shoulder given to Veda by the board. Sthalekar in a social media post said that as a BCCI contracted player, Veda should have at least received a communication from the BCCI. “Whilst not selecting Veda for the upcoming series maybe justified from their point of view, what angers me the most is that as a contracted player she has not received a communication from the BCCI, just to even check how she is coping,” she wrote on Twitter. The Indian cricketer is facing a tough time at the personal front as well. Two weeks after her mother’s demise due to Covid-19, Veda lost her sister due to complications related to the disease. India Women cricketer Veda Krishnamurthy loses mother, sister in a fortnight to Covid-19

After the death of her mother a fortnight ago, the Indian Women’s cricket team represent Veda Krishnamurthy lost her elder sister on Wednesday, May 5 to Covid-19. Veda’s sister Vatsala Shivakumar, 42, breathed her last in a hospital in Chikmagalur, around 245 kilometres from Bengaluru. She was believed to be suffering from a severe lung infection caused by Covid-19-induced pneumonia. While her 67-year-old mother Cheluvamaba Devi died in Kadur and sister in Chikmagalur, Veda has been away from the family in Bengaluru. "With the help of the hospital staff, Veda's sister had even begun FaceTiming with Veda and some of her other near and dear ones earlier this week. It is shocking to learn that after losing aunty, we couldn't save didi either,” Reena Malhotra, a former India player and a close aide of Krishnamurthy was quoted as saying to ESPNCricinfo. “I can only request everyone to give Veda and her family the time and privacy they need to bear this immense loss," Malhotra added. The 29-year-old Karnatak player has played 48 ODIs and 76 T20Is for India and was recently seen playing for Karnataka in the domestic tournament, Women’s ODI Cup. Veda, who has 1704 international runs and three wickets, last played for India during the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Final in Australia in March 2020.
