Player Bio
David Jonathan Willey, a left-arm swing bowler who is also a useful batsman, became a regular in the England national team post the disappointing World Cup campaign of 2015. Willey’s ability to hit the ball down the order, apart from being a wicket-taker, cemented the allrounder in Eion Morgan’s masterplan to become the World Champions. However, the availability of Jofra Archer squeezed Willey out of the 2019 event, which the southpaw coins as "the worst thing that can happen to a player”.
The allrounder is the son of Former Test cricketer turned Umpire, Peter Willey, who made his debut for Northamptonshire in 2009 as a lower-order batsman who could swing the new ball. However, he didn't find his consistency until 2012, when he bagged 43 wickets for Northamptonshire to help the club clinch a T20 title.
The domestic success meant Willey found a place for him in the England Lions and was taunted to be part of England’s squad for the 2015 mega event but a stress fracture sidelined the Northampton-born from the selection. Although, ODI and T20I debuts weren’t too far.
Post the World Cup, Willey was welcomed in the national squad as an experimental plan, however, the allrounder emerged to be a perfect fit for England’s missing puzzle. He played a huge part in the World T20 of 2016 and the 2017 Champion Trophy, where England finished as finalists and semi-finalists, respectively.
Willey became a regular in England’s success but the joy was long-lasting. The allrounder was left out of the team on the eve of the 2019 World Cup and was replaced by the newly qualified Jofra Archer. He made a comeback after a span of 12 months to grab his maiden ODI fifer but hasn’t found his permanent spot since then.
Over the years, Willey has been providing his services in various franchise leagues such as IPL, BBL, T20 Blast, and Abu Dhabi T10 League. The latest addition to the list has been the Hundred as the allrounder was picked by Northern Superchargers for the inaugural season of the tournament.
