CPL 2021 | SLK vs TKR: Butchered by Tallwahs, St. Lucia Kings look to bounce back against Knight Riders

It is not going to be an easy task for any team to come back after being defeated in the manner that St. Lucia Kings were by the Jamaica Tallwahs in their opening encounter. They were hammered all around the park while bowling and while batting it was just not their day as they got bowled out 120 runs short of the target. It was not even close to what they would have expected their season opener to be with new captain Faf du Plessis in command. On the other hand are Trinbago Knight Riders, who, after going down narrowly against Guyana Amazon Warriors in their season opener, came back strong against Barbados Royals and went on to register their first win of the season in a comfortable manner by six wickets and with plenty of balls to spare. So two teams with contrasting last match results will now go head to head with one trying to come back from a disaster and another trying to build on the momentum. It won’t be easy for Kings to come back, but sometimes you need early lessons to rise up to the occasion. Also, they need to bowl Cornwall too if they are playing him in the XI. St Lucia Kings vs Trinbago Knight Riders: Match Details Match Number: 07 Date and Time: August 29, 2021, 07:30 pm IST, 10:00 am Local, 02:00 pm GMT Venue: Warner Park, Basseterre Broadcast: Star Sports Live Stream: Fancode Pitch Report The pitch hasn’t really had one face so far as it has been slow at times and at other times the ball has just come on to bat nicely. Thus to say that it would be a belter of a wicket would be a bit too hasty for an assumption. But no doubt, it wouldn’t be dead bat and totals around 160 will be competitive. Weather Forecast and Toss The weather at Warner Park will remain hot and humid with humidity being as high as 72%. The temperatures would remain in the lower thirties with the moderate wind blowing from the northeast and thus helping the bowlers early on in the morning. A captain winning the toss would look to bowl first without any doubt. CPL 2021 | TKR vs BR: Isuru Udana, Kieron Pollard get Trinbago back on track

Trinbago Knight Riders’ captain Kieron Pollard blew a flying kiss after he smacked one out of the park for a maximum off Thisara Perera in the 17th over to complete his fifty against Barbados Royals in St Lucia on Saturday. The right-hander struck a boundary on the very next delivery to complete a comprehensive win for TKR by 6 wickets as they chased down a target of 123 runs with more than three overs to spare. Trinbago needed to get the momentum back after they suffered a defeat in the first match of the competition and Pollard along with Denesh Ramdin showed their skills against the Royals to get the side back on track. The Knight Riders had some early hiccups after they were reduced to 18/3 and were left tottering at 38/4 in 8th over when skipper Pollard and wicket-keeper batsman Ramdin joined hands and steadied the ship for the side. The two batsmen made sure that there were no further dismissals and put up an unbeaten stand of 87 runs for the fifth wicket to see the side home. But the game totally changed in the 15th over when Jason Holder took the ball in his hands. He had only given 8 runs in the first three overs that he had bowled but what unleashed next was simply disappointing for his side and left Holder in disarray. He was hit for three sixes in his final over and ended up giving away 22 runs in total which also included a couple of no-balls to eventually return with figures of 0/30 in 4 overs. Pollard (58*) and Ramdin (29*) then took less than two overs to go over the line and hand the side its first win of the season. Mohammad Amir was the pick of the bowlers for Barbados after he scalped a three-for at the cost of 21 runs in 4 overs while Oshane Thomas too had an impressive day at the office as he returned with figures of 1/14 in 4 overs. Earlier in the day, it was Isuru Udana show who ripped through the Barbados batting line up and bagged a five-wicket haul during the course. The Royals had a decent start to the proceedings as the openers Glenn Philips and Charles put up 29 runs for the first wicket. But Charles’ departure broke the shackles and Barbados kept losing wickets at regular intervals to get bundled out for 122 in the final over. However, Charles' wicket was a controversial one as the replays showed that it came off the shoulder and not the bat while the batter went for a hook on a short delivery from the bowler. But he was eventually given out and had to walk back into the hut. Udana’s fifer included the wickets of Philips, Charles, captain Holder, Azam Khan and Thisara Perera. Azam top-scored for Barbados with a 21-ball 30 that included a couple of sixes and as many boundaries but the middle-order failed to fire and the side was pushed on the backfoot. Apart from Udana, Ravi Rampaul picked up two wickets while Hosein and Narine took one wicket apiece. Barbados captain Holder expressed his disappointment and said that the players need to take up the responsibility. “We didn't give ourself a fair chance (with that kind of a score). Guys need to take responsibility. We have had two tough games so far. It's a tricky situation, trying to defend 120 is difficult,” he said after the match. TKR skipper Pollard admitted that the side didn’t really have a good start to the competition but lauded the efforts made by Ramdin and Udana to eventually give them the first win. “Wasn't a great start for us yesterday. Even today it wasn't a great start, but these things happen,” he said. “We were in a spot of bother today, but Ramdin played well. Shows the experience we have in this TKR line-up. I think Udana's come here to make a statement. He got those early wickets and we were able to support him at the backend,” Pollard added. The Royals will now face Jamaica Tallawahs while TKR will be up against Saint Lucia Kings on Sunday.

CPL 2021 | TKR vs GAW: Guyana hold nerves to start campaign on positive note

Guyana Amazon Warriors began the CPL 2021 campaign on a positive note after defeating Trinbago Knight Riders by 9 runs in St Kitts on Thursday. Chasing 148, the TKR side had a disappointing start to the chase after they lost Lendl Simmons early. The Knight Riders kept losing wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 90/7 with the likes of Kieron Pollard and Darren Bravo back in the hut. Later, Denesh Ramdin tried to steady the ship for the side and stitched a stand of 21 runs with Akeal Hosein for the 8th wicket before departing for 28 off 25, courtesy a good catch on the boundary line by Romario Shepherd off Shoaib Malik. TKR needed 32 runs off the last over and Naveen-ul-Haq was handed over the ball who was smashed for a maximum on the very first delivery of the over which was also a no-ball. The equation came down to 25 needed off the last six balls. But the fast bowler made a good return and gave away just three runs in the next three deliveries to get Warriors back in control and then scalped Ravi Rampaul’s wicket on the fourth ball. He was hit for a couple of sixes on the trot on the final two deliveries of the innings by Hosein but that didn’t really create much of a problem for Guyana as TKR fell short of the target eventually. Shepherd was the pick of the bowlers for Guyana after he scalped a three-for while Imran Tahir and Odean Smith picked up a couple of wickets each. Earlier, the Amazon Warriors rode on a fine half-century from Shimron Hetmyer to score a decent total of 142/7 in 20 overs. The Warriors also lost an early wicket after Brandon King was sent back in the hut for 9 by Hosein. The Guyana team kept losing wickets regularly but Hetmyer held the fort from one end. Sunil Narine and Hosein had a brilliant day on the field with the ball. Both the bowlers returned with figures of 2/17 in 4 overs. TKR captain Pollard said that dropping catches and giving away runs created some pressure on them. “I thought we gave them too many runs in the backend. We dropped a few catches. Those 10-15 runs mattered. We only have ourselves to blame for not getting over the line,” he said after the match. Pooran hailed the team’s efforts after the win but also expressed disappointment on the way the last over went. ”TKR are a very good team but we were very positive. But we fought and fought till the end. We thought if we could save our batters a bit and let Odean know what he can do in the powerplay. The bowlers did well on this track. A little disappointed as to how the last over went,” he said. TKR will now play Barbados while Guyana will be up against St Kitts and Nevis Patriots on Saturday.
