World T20 2021 | Shakib Al Hasan highlights scope for improvement after desperate win over Oman

Re-establishing his all-around credentials and reclaiming his status as Bangladesh’ biggest match-winner, Shakib Al Hasan put his hands up just at the right time for his side in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Bangladesh have not been at their best in the ongoing T20 World Cup but just when they were on the verge of another shocking loss that could have ended their journey in the tournament inside the first round, Shakib Al Hasan shone bright both with the ball and bat to help them get over the line against the hosts Oman. They had suffered an embarrassing defeat against Scotland and found themselves under enormous pressure once again before Shakib forged an 80 run partnership with the opener Mohammad Naim. He later came back with the ball and took three wickets including the crucial wicket of Jatinder Singh, who was looking set on a 32-ball 40. He was awarded the Man of the Match award for his all-round contribution to Bangladesh’s win over Oman. He outlined the role played by the duo of Mohammad Saifuddin and Mahedi Hasan and said that their spells that yielded only 30 runs for the opposition brought them back in the game. He also said that the morale in the Bangladesh camp would be lighter after a much-needed win that keeps them going in the tournament. "I think the bowling of Saifuddin and Mahedi was the turning point as they probably had given less than 30 runs to bring us back in the game. I think the win is certainly relieving and I feel the atmosphere in the dressing room will be better after this win," Shakib said. However, he did not overlook the struggle of his side so far in the tournament and outlined their loss at the hands of Scotland and the hard work required for the win over Oman. He did not fall short of praise for the Scotts though and said that there are no favourites in the format and that any team who get two or three best performances on a particular day can defeat anyone. "I think the loss against Scotland was disappointing and we must credit them while even today we had to work hard to earn the win against Oman. Look, we must credit the associate countries as they play despite all the hurdles and they are playing good cricket so I feel they deserve all the credit. In the T20 format there is no favourite as everyone has to play well and as this is a short format only one or two players can change the momentum or have a huge impact behind a win,” Shakib added. Bangladesh have been found wanting in the tournament so far, especially in the batting department and Shakib conceded the scope of improvement for his fellow batsmen in the side. He said that the batsmen are underperforming both at the start and towards the end of an innings. He highlighted the target of 170 runs that would be sufficient for the bowlers to win them the game as a major goal going forward. "There is room for improvement in the batting as we have scored 150 runs and we can add 20 to 25 runs to it. If we can add 15 runs in the power play and 10 runs at the end it can be done and we are capable of it. If we can score 170 runs with the bowling attack we can fight against any team and we need this improvement,” Shakib concluded. Bangladesh are set to play their last game against Papua New Guinea and a win over them will ost certainly seal a place for them in the super 12 phase of the competition.

But more than the catch, it was Butt’s bowling action matching legendary Pakistan all-rounder Mudassar Nazar and his background as a former Pakistan U-19 player. Fayyaz Butt, born in the Sialkot town of Punjab province in Pakistan had dreams of representing his country at the highest level as he went on to play the Under-19 World Cup for the Men in Green in Australia. He was even instrumental in getting Pakistan to the Under -19 World Cup final, beating arch-rivals India in the quarter-final in which he was also Man of the Match for his efforts of 4-27 in that game, picking the wickets of the likes of KL Rahul. But come 2021 and the same man is playing a senior Men’s World Cup indeed, but only for Oman. Though he did fulfil his dream of playing in the World cup, but not for the country he was born in. Butt debuted for Oman in ODIs in 2019 against Namibia and he made his T20I debut in the same year against Ireland.

With Liton Das catching Scotland’s Michael Leask at the long-on boundary off the bowling of Shakib Al Hasan, the Bangladesh all-rounder became the leading wicket-taker in T20 internationals, overtaking Sri Lankan and T20 legend Lasith Malinga. Leask was the 108th dismissal in Shakib’s career, one more than Malinga’s record of 107 wickets. The 34-year-old Bangladesh player, who was playing only his 89th match is also the only international player to do the double of 1000 runs and 100 wickets in T20Is. As far as the game is concerned, Scotland, who are playing their first game of the T20 World Cup 2021 much like Bangladesh, have been reduced to 55-6 after being put to bat first by the Tigers’ skipper Mahmudullah who won the toss. BAN vs AUS | Australia finally get past Dhaka demons to register first win on tour

The Australian team was finally able to get one past Bangladesh on what has been a tormenting tour of the subcontinent nation so far. This win didn’t come easy at all. In fact, at one point in time at 65-6 with most important batter Mitchell Marsh getting out and still 40 runs needed to win, Kangaroos seemed like treading a similar path as to the last three games. However, Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar held on the fort with the latter accelerating and getting the team close to winning before perishing when only six more runs were needed for the win. Since only a few runs were needed, Turner and Andrew Tye made sure that the team crossed the line with three wickets remaining. Dan Christian played an important role in the chase as well when he hit Shakib Al Hasan for five sixes in an over to ease the pressure out. For Bangladesh, Mustafizur Rahman and Mahedi Hasan were once again the pick of the bowlers with fizz giving away only 9 runs in his quota of four overs and picked up the important wickets of Christian and Carey as well. Bangladesh script history, thrash listless Australia to win first ever series against them

Bangladesh defeated Australia by 10 runs in the third T20 international and registered their first-ever series win over Australia. Chasing a modest total of 128 runs, Australia needed 22 runs from the last over to keep the series alive after losing the first two games of the series. However, Mahedi Hasan held his nerves and denied the pair of Alex Carey and Dan Christian the chance to win the game. The bowling trio of Mustafizur Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan and Nasum Ahmed were the chief architects of Bangladesh’s historic series win. and Australia suffered from the lack of firepower and experience of playing on low and slow surfaces. They dropped Josh Phillipe, who has not had a good form with the bat and the stand-in skipper Matthew Wade promoted himself back to the top of the order. The move, however, did not yield fruitful results as he perished very early on and his partner Ben McDermott could not quite get into the momentum of scoring runs. Mitchell Marsh enhanced his reputation further with another slow and steady fifty run score. However, lack of support from the other end and his inability t break free against Mustafizur and spinners did not help Australia at all. Earlier, Bangladesh too suffered a collapse of their top order with openers Mohammad Naim and Soumya Sarkar failing to get going. Shakib played some delightful strokes to get Bangladesh going, but could not quite extend his 17-ball 26 cameo to something substantial. The hosts’ captain Mahmudullah scored a half-century but he battled to keep up the pace of his innings and it took a short cameo from Nurul Hasan that helped them post a respectable total. The debutant Nathan Ellis registered a phenomenal record to his name on his international debut when scalped out Mustafizur Rahman, Mahedi Hasan, and Shoriful Islam on three consecutive balls to claim a hattrick. However, the feat came very late in the piece for Australia to have any say on Bangladesh’s batting efforts. The series has gone to Bangladesh and Australia have been handed a harsh reality check about their preparations leading up to an all-important World T20 in the UAE later this year.

Shakib included in 15-man Bangladesh squad for first two ODIs against Sri Lanka

Shakib al Hasan would be making a comeback to the national side as the Bangladesh Cricket Board announced the squad for the first two ODIs of the Sri Lanka series beginning May 23. Having missed the last Test of the West Indies series at home and then the rest of the Bangladesh assignment including the New Zealand and Sri Lanka tours, this would be Hasan’s second major appearance after the end of his ICC imposed one-year ban post the ODI World Cup in 2019. Najmul Hossain Shanto the centurion from the first Hambantota Test on the Sri Lanka tour is a notable miss from the ODI squad that played in New Zealand in March this year. Tamim Iqbal remains the skipper of the side and youngsters Shoriful Islam and Mahedi Hasan have also retained their spots. Along with Shoriful, Taskin Ahmed, Mohammad Saifuddin and coming on the back of a successful IPL stint, Mustafizur Rahman is the four pacers in the squad while the sin department would have the likes of Miraz, Mahedi and Mosaddek Hossain sharing the ball with all-round options of Shakib, Afif Hossain and Mahmudullah. All three matches would be played at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka in empty stands due to Covid-19 second wave hit in the subcontinent.

NZ vs BAN | 2nd ODI: Ton-up Tom Latham plays captain's knock to help Blackcaps clinch series

A captain’s knock of 110 runs from Tom Latham and important contributions from Devon Conway and James Neesham in the middle order helped New Zealand clinch the ODI series against Bangladesh in Christchurch. Chasing a target of 272 runs set by Bangladesh on the back of a much-improved batting performance after a debacle in the first game, the hosts were in trouble early on. The openers Martin Guptill and Henry Nicholls started off on dominating note just like in the first game when they were chasing a low score. However, the target of 272 needed one of them to go big with the bat, and they failed to take New Zealand off to a brilliant start. An off-cutter that has been Mustafizur’s signature delivery over the years found Guptill playing a back of a length delivery early and the pacer had enough time in his hands to run back and carry out a caught and bowled. Off-spinner Mahedi Hasan has had an unpleasant start to his ODI career in the last game, but he was eager to make amends this time around. After enticing a false big shot from Nicholls that saw the left-hander losing his leg stump, he got the better of Will Young. The highly-promising batsman was trying to paddle the ball round the corner of an off-spinning delivery that turned ever so slightly and his stumps along with the Blackcaps’ chasing efforts were rattled. Young failed to cash in on the opening created by injury to Ross Taylor and the onus of resurrecting the Blackcaps fell on the shoulders of an ever so impressive youngster Devon Conway and stand-in captain Tom Latham. In between the wickets of Nicholls and Young, Conway made his intentions clear with two dismissive pull shots that went rapidly towards the ropes. As soon as there were two left handers in Conway and Tom Latham together at the crease, skipper Tamim Iqbal switched to the off-spinning twin of Mahedi Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz. The move paid dividends in the short run as the next four over yielded only 13 runs and the batsmen had to do something to keep the scoreboard going. Latham found a length to find a release shot towards the midwicket boundary in the fifth over of the partnership. But, the sluggishness continued for some more time before the skipper found another boundary with sublime timing once again against the turn. Iqbal brought back the pace of Taskin Ahmed and New Zealand kept on batting without panicking in search of boundaries. The duo added 113 runs in the middle overs and kept the runs coming for the Blackcaps at a decent run rate. The duo joined each other in just the 11th over of the chase when the Blackcaps were in need of more than 200 runs, and by the time Conway departed in the 34th over, the hosts were just around 100 runs away from the target and a series win that were to huge in the absence of Kane Williamson and Ros Taylor.
