Player Bio

A profound batting all-rounder with a left-arm orthodox in his arsenal, Liam Dawson joined his first cricket club when he was 7 and moved to Chippenham Cricket Club in Wiltshire where he played his youth cricket.

During his stint with the Chippenham Club, he was spotted by Hampshire. Dawson soon started playing for Hampshire Second XI and Wiltshire. His impressive performances for Hampshire’s second XI earned him his debut cap for the England U-19 team for the tour of Malaysia in 2006-07. During the unofficial tour, he even bagged figures of 6/9 against Malaysia U-19 and was also made the captain for the U-19 team.

The Swindon-based cricketer made his first-class debut against Yorkshire in September 2007 and had a non-significant debut. His maiden century came in the following year against Nottinghamshire. It was in 2011 when he started focusing on batting in the County Championship.  However, he was quick to realise that bowling was his strong point. He picked up 26 wickets in the County Championships in the 2012 season. Getting better with time, Dawson scored heavily and crossed the 1000-run mark in a season for the first time in 2013 and also started focusing on the shortest format.

Dawson was first named in the national team for the ICC World T20 2016 held in India but didn’t get an opportunity to play. He made his T20I debut against Sri Lanka in July 2016 and scalped 3 crucial wickets on his debut. His ODI debut came soon after in September 2016 against Pakistan. The out of favour English international had a memorable 2016 making his Test debut in December against India on a rank-turner in Chennai. He made an instant impact scoring an unbeaten 66 in Chennai which was the highest Test score by an England debutant batting at No. 8.

An injury to the right wrist in 2018 hampered his selection in the national team and since then he has failed to make his presence felt. A regular for the Hampshire team, his hopes for making a return in the England jersey is slightly in doubt.
