Cricket South Africa has released the list of its contracted players for the 2022-23 season. Janneman Malan and Keegan Petersen have made it into the list for the very first time, Beuran Hendricks and Heinrich Klaasenhave missed out to find places in the 16-member list this time.
Janneman Malan named ICC Emerging Men's Cricketer of the Year
South Africa's Janneman Malan has been named as ICC Emerging Cricketer of the Year for 2021. In 17 international matches that he played, Malan notched up 715 runs at an average of 47.66 Average and 101.85 strike rate. This also included two tons and three fifties. He unleashed a brilliant show against Ireland in one of the games where he struck 177, a knock that comprised 16 fours and six maximums. "Malan's most memorable knock in 2021 has to be his unbeaten 177 against Ireland. He looked absolutely on song that day and played numerous exquisite shots around the ground. Whether it was a spinner or a pacer, he treated them with equal disdain," the ICC said in a statement. The batter expressed delight on being named the ICC Emerging Player of the year. "It's a privilege to be named as the ICC Emerging Player of the Year. It's an honour to be among all the nominees. I would like to thank my family, my support system, team for the opportunity," he said in a video posted by the ICC. Malan also talked about his favourite innings that came against Sri Lanka. "My favourite innings was against Sri Lanka where I had to 50 overs while I was cramping. It was a big innings for me personally," he added.

South Africa batter Janneman Malan has lavished praise on Quinton de Kock and said that the left-handed batsman made it pretty easy for him to score runs during the second ODI against India in Paarl. "Quinton made it easy for me at the start. I just tried to give him as much strike as possible because I just wanted to let him go do his thing. He played a couple of ridiculous shots, which are good signs," said Malan. The two batsmen struck a first-wicket stand of 132 runs with De Kock scoring 78 off 66 and Malan missing out on a hundred by just 9 run. "He is one of the best batters in the world when he gets going, so it was good to bat with him," the right-handed opener added. South Africa took an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series after winning the second game by 7 wickets while chasing down a target of 288 in just over 48 overs.
Babar, Shakib, Malan and Stirling battle to be crowned ICC Men's ODI Player of the Year
The International Cricket Council, after announcing nominees for the Men’s T20I Player of the Year 2021, also revealed the list of nominees for the Men’s Player of the Year ODIs. A format that was played very rarely this year. The list of four was shared by names, that do not find their mention on the lips of all cricket followers. The great all-rounder from Bangladesh Shakib Al Hasan shared the space with Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, Ireland’s hard-hitting batter Paul Stirling and a new batting sensation from South Africa Janneman Malan. Shakib was at the top of his form returning from his one year ban after the 2019 ODI World Cup. The left-hander started the year by grabbing the Player of the Series award against West Indies. In total, he scored 277 runs at an average of 39.57 with two fifties and also took 17 wickets at an average of 17.52 in only nine games. He won yet another Player of the Series against Zimbabwe. On the other hand, Pakistan skipper, also the number one ODI batter in the ICC rankings, Babar Azam presents a stiff challenge to Shakib. Even after having played just six games this year, the right-handed batter managed to score 405 at an average of 67.50 and also hit two centuries to go with it. His best showing was the knock of 158 against England when his team scored 331 but still lost the game. 158 is Babar’s highest score in ODIs. Challenging the two established names is South Africa’s up and coming batter Janneman Malan. The 25-year-old who announced his arrival on the big stage against Australia in 2020 in the three-match T20I series, was finally given a chance to show his skills in the longer format. He grabbed the opportunities with both hands and scored the second highest runs among all players in ODIs this year, amassing 509 runs in eight matches at an average of 84.83 with two centuries and two half-centuries. His two centuries, first a sensational knock of 177 against Ireland and then a 135-ball 121 against Sri Lanka came in tough situations. Against Ireland, it was a matter of series on the line while against Sri Lanka, the Proteas batter showed how with willpower and strength one can catch the game at any stage. Although last in the list in terms of names, Ireland’s Paul Stirling’s candidature for the annual award is not one bit less serious than the other three. The 31-year-old who started the year 2021 with a swashbuckling century against UAE, hit two more, both coming against Afghanistan before hitting two half-centuries, one each against Zimbabwe and Netherlands to become the highest run-getter in ODIs this year. The Dublin born has amassed 705 runs in 14 matches at an average of 79.66.
South Africa elevate Keshav Maharaj as captain, rest big players from Netherlands ODI series
After a grueling season where the players travelled across the world to play and prepare for the T20 World Cup, South Africa have rested their major players such as the skipper Temba Bavuma, senior batsmen such as Quinton de Kock and Aiden Markram and Rassie van der Dussen along with the pacer duo of Anrich Nortje and Kagiso Rabada for the upcoming home series against Netherlands. Keshav Maharaj has been elevated as the captain of the Proteas side in absence of Bavuma. The likes of Janneman Malan, David Miller along with Daryn Dupavillon, Reeza Hendricks, Sisanda Magala form the batting core of the Proteas. There could be opportunities for Zubayr Hamza and Ryan Rickelton in the absence of senior players in the side. The Proteas have also reintroduced Wayne Parnell, who left the country to play county cricket as part of Kolpak deal in 2017. Now, as the United Kingdom has left the European Union and subsequently the Kolpak deals are not available for them anymore, players are returning to play cricket in South Africa. The responsibility of pace department will hinge on the shoulders of Lungi Ngidi, whose career has hit a sort of roadblock after the emergence of Nortje and his able partnership with Rabada. The skipper Maharaj will form the spin bowling partnership with Tabraiz Shamsi. SL vs SA | 2nd ODI: Janneman Malan, Shamsi take series into decider after thumping win
South Africa made a fine comeback in the three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka after winning the second encounter by 67 runs (DLS Method) in a rain-curtailed game in Colombo. The match was initially reduced to 47 overs per side but had to get cut short once again handing the hosts a target of 265 runs in 41 overs eventually. The home side had a dismal start to the proceedings and were reduced to 19/3 to be left tottering at 61/4 before Charith Asalanka and Dasun Shanaka chipped in with a partnership of 64 runs for the fifth wicket. Shanaka was then sent back in the hut for 30 by Shamsi while Asalanka continued to score runs and notched up a half-century. Sri Lanka then lost a couple of more wickets and were 147/7 when Chamika Karunaratne and Dushmantha Chameera tried to provide some resistance to the team with a stand of 45 runs for the 8th wicket. But their efforts weren’t really enough to take the team over the line and the hosts were bowled out for 197 in 26.4 overs. Tabraiz Shamsi was the pick of the bowlers for the Proteas after he bagged a fifer. Earlier, South Africa rode on a brilliant ton from Janneman Malan, a fifty from Hendricks and a late surge from Klassen to post 283/6 in the allotted 47 overs. Klassen compiled 43 off 27. The visitors capitalised on the steady start that they got in the initial phase of the game to put a good total on the board. South Africa stand-in captain Keshav Maharaj lauded the team and hailed the bowling unit for their efforts after the match. “My job was made easier by the team. We bowled well up first and pushed the Lankans on the back foot. I think the boys put in more energy behind the ball today. We talked about it. You should also play to the conditions,” he said. The three-match series is levelled at 1-1 with the third and deciding match to take place on Tuesday at the same venue.
1st Test, Day 4: Joe Root hits splendid century to put India under pressure
England captain Joe Root scored a splendid hundred on the fourth day of the first Test against India to steer his team to a commanding position. He drove Shardul Thakur past mid-on to bring up his 21st century in the longest format of the game. He walked out to bat after the fall of Zak Crawley and batted with supreme confidence and fluency to put England in the lead. He was severe against anything pitched fuller to him by Indian pacers and smashed 14 fours n his way to the century. England had started the fourth day trailing behind India’s first total of 278 runs by 70 runs and they came under pressure after the departure of Rory Burns and Zak Crawley. However, Root stitched partnerships with Dom Sibley, Jonny Bairstow and Dan Lawrence to keep India at bay. Root has 21 century including the ongoing one against India and 50 fifties in a 106-match long Test career. He had made his Test debut against the same opponent in 2013 in Nagpur. It was his 10th century as the captain of the England Test side in 97 Test innings. England have exceeded their lead over India beyond the 160-run mark and India would need to bat really bat to get those runs to chase to go 1-0 up in the series.
Little, Adair and Tector of Ireland fined by ICC for breach of Code of Conduct vs South Africa
Three Ireland cricketers Josh Little, Mark Adair and Harry Tector were reprimanded by the International Cricket Council on the advice of the Match referee in the third and final ODI between South Africa and the hots. While Little was fined 15% of his match fees and given one demerit point for breaching Level 1 of ICC Code of Conduct rules, Tector and Adair were given one demerit point each. "Little was found to have breached Article 2.12 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to 'inappropriate physical contact with a Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other person (including a spectator) during an International Match'," an ICC release said. The 21-year-old left-arm quick, Little made inappropriate contact with Quinton de Kock in the 11th over of the match. Tector and Adair were fined under Article 2.3 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to the "use of an audible obscenity during an International Match." While Adair used abusive language against Janneman Malan during the 43rd over of South Africa's innings, Tector uttered foul words after he was denied a review after being given out as he was late to call it. As all three players accepted the charges levelled by ICC match referee Kevin Gallagher, there was no need for a formal hearing.
IRE vs SA: Simi Singh's record maiden hundred in vain as South Africa level series with 70 run win
Simi Singh struck a hundred, his maiden hundred in international cricket and it became the highest score by number eight batsman in the history of ODI cricket. In fact, the Ireland batsman became the first-ever player to score a hundred batting at number eight. However, that could not stop South Africa from registering an emphatic 70 run win in the third ODI to level the three-match series 1-1 after the first game was washed out by rain. Ireland didn’t have an ideal start to their chase and to be honest, Singh and his partner Curtis Campher were the saving grace of a sorry looking scorecard. The hosts lost the top six wickets at the score of 92 with last match heroes skipper Andrew Balbarnie, Gorge Dockrell and Harry Tector back in the hut. Singh then joined Capmher and the two added 104 for the seventh wicket in just 107 balls. Post the Capmher wicket, the 34-year-old Punjab born started teeing off. In fact, he scored his last 46 runs off just 30 balls. He added 47 for the last wicket with Craig Young, but in the end, it was too much to ask for from the tailenders as Anrich Nortrje removed Young to bowl Ireland out for 276. For the Proteas, Andile Phehlukwayo and Tabraiz Shamsi picked up three wickets each. Earlier in the day, having won the toss South Africa decided to bat first and made good use of the opportunity as both openers Quinton de Kock and Janneman Malan hit centuries and added 225 for the first wicket. Malan remained unbeaten at his career-best 177 to guide the Proteas to 346 in their 50 overs. Malan was adjudged Man of the Match for his efforts. Having drawn the ODI series, the two sides would now take on each other in the T20Is with the first of the three games being played at the same venue of The Village, Dublin, as the three ODIs.
