WI vs IRE | 3rd ODI: Ireland etch name in record books, clinch series 2-1
Ireland created history in Jamaica after beating West Indies in the third ODI to clinch the three-match series 2-1. Chasing 213, the visitors lost a wicket on the very first ball of the innings after William Porterfield was dismissed for a golden duck by Alzarri Joseph. But a fine piece of batting from Paul Stirling, Andy McBrine and Harry Tector got the Irish team back in the hunt. Stirling and McBrine first steadied the ship with a 73-run stand for the second wicket before Stirling was trapped in front of the stumps by Akeal Hosein for 44 off 38. McBrine was then joined by Tector in the middle and the two batters stitched a partnership of 79 runs for the third wicket. McBrine eventually departed for 59 off 100 deliveries and his dismissal certainly broke the shackles as Ireland began to lose wickets at regular intervals and were reduced to 197/6 with Tector also back in the hut. But Gareth Delany chipped in with 10 off 5 that helped the visiting team inch closer to target before Craig Young and Mark Adair took the team over the line without losing any further wickets. Ireland won the match by 2 wickets in the 45th over. Hosein and Roston Chase picked up three wickets each for the side. Earlier, West Indies were off to a flying start, courtesy an aggressive knock of 53 off 39 deliveries from Shai Hope. But Hope’s departure pushed the West Indies batting unit on back foot as they lost wickets quickly and were left tottering at 119/7. Jason Holder then took the onus on himself and added runs to the tally before he was run out for 44 off 60 leaving the Caribbean side at 182/8 in the 41st over. Apart from him, Hosein (23 off 36) and Odean Smith (20* off 10) also made some contributions that helped the side to go past the 200-run mark before getting bundled out for 212. McBrine scalped a four-wicket haul for Ireland while Young had three wickets to his name eventually. Stirling later expressed delight and noted that it was a good comeback from the side especially after losing the first game. “Delighted and very proud of the lads, To comeback from 0-1 was amazing. He (Balbirnie) will be absolutely chuffed for all us and he will be watching every ball and supporting us from the hotel. He (Tector) has been really consistent and he is really hungry to score runs, He (McBrine) epitomizes what an Irish cricket should be and the commitment and the passion he shows on the field is outstanding,” he said in the post-match presentation.
Gary Wilson, William Porterfield added to Ireland's coaching staff for World T20 2021
Ireland have added Gary Wilson and William Porterfield in the coaching staff for the upcoming World T20 2021 scheduled to take place in the UAE and Oman in October-November. The announcement was made in a statement from Cricket Ireland. “North West Warriors head coach Gary Wilson has joined the squad, while Wilson’s Warriors assistant coach and current international William Porterfield will join the squad today,” the statement read. “Ryan Eagleson, announced recently as the bowling coach for the T20 World Cup, has also today flown out to Dubai after successfully coaching the Ireland Under-19s Men’s side to world cup qualification on Sunday in Almeria, Spain,” it further added. All the members of the coaching staff will have to undergo a six-day mandatory hotel quarantine upon arrival in Dubai before the side’s preparation camp which is slated to start on October 1. Ireland will first play a warm-up match against Scotland on October 5, 2021 which will be followed by three T20Is against UAE on October 7, 8 and 10 respectively. The team’s World T20 warm-up matches will be played on October 12 against PNG and on October 14 against Bangladesh in Abu Dhabi. The Irish side will then face Netherlands in the first match of the World T20 round 1 on October 18 which will be followed by the encounter against Sri Lanka on October 20 in Abu Dhabi. The team will then fly to Sharjah to play Namibia on October 22. Recently, a 18-man preliminary squad was announced which will eventually be reduced to 15 for the tournament. The other three players will travel as reserves. Zimbabwe registered only their second win in the ICC World Cup Super League 2020-22 when they defeated Ireland by 38 runs in the first match of the three-match series at Civil Service Cricket Club in Belfast. All-rounder Sikandar Raza, who got into the team for the first time after missing the entire five-match T20I series proved to be a good asset with the bat while Sean Williams and Brendan Taylor, the other two senior members of the team also did well to merit their inclusion. Batting first, Zimbabwe put up a competitive total of 266-7 courtesy of a fighting inning by skipper Craig Ervine (64 off 96) and flourishing innings by Skandar Raza (59* off 44) and Brendan Taylor (49 off 45). Late order hitting by Luke Jongwe played an important role as well. For Ireland, each of the six bowlers tried, picked a wicket each while Jongwe was run out. In its attempt to chase down the total, the Irish had a decent enough start with the openers putting up a 64 run stand for the first wicket. While Stirling got out eventually unable to score quickly which is his ideal way to play, skipper Balbirnie followed him to the dressing room soon as well. Harry Tector then combined with William Porterfield and the two added 71 runs for the third wicket as Porterfield reached his 19th ODI fifty. But once Porterfield was dismissed by Jongwe, it became very difficult for Ireland to get going as spinners Williams, Wesley Madhevere, Raza and Wellington Masakadza. However, it was Blessing Muzarabani who took advantage of that pressure created by spinners as he ran through the Irish middle order picking up four wickets in his 9.4 overs. In the end, even after Porterfoeld’s and Tector’s fifties, Ireland folded out for 228 and thus lost the game by 45 runs. Raza was adjudged Man of the Match for his batting. The two teams will now clash in the second ODI on September 10 at the same venue.
Andrew Balbirnie to lead Ireland for ODI series against Netherlands in Utrecht
Ireland announced a 15 man squad which will be led by Andrew Balbirne for their tour to the Netherlands. The men in green would play three ODIs part of the Cricket World Cup Super League and try and add to their points for a chance of qualification to the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup 2023, to be held in India. The squad includes veterans like Kevin O’Brien, William Porterfield and Paul Stirling while young guns like Gareth Delany and Mark Adair have also found a place in it. “The squad selected, not only rewards form but provides a group of players that offer Graham Ford and Andrew Balbirnie options on any given match day,’ said Andrew White chief Selector of National Men’s team. “We have sought to provide continuity with the young players who continue to gain exposure at the international level, while still incorporating a number of experienced players whose value around such a squad goes far beyond just their performances on the field,” he added. The Irish team which sits on the 10th spot in the Cricket World Cup Super League table with just one win in five matches have a great opportunity to gain momentum ahead of the South Africa and Zimbabwe series at home. They face the Netherlands which tied two-match series against Scotland recently. The three-match series will be played in Utrecht, the Netherlands with the first one starting on June 2.
