BBL 11 | Strikers clinch thriller against Thunder, continue their fairy tale run towards final
Adelaide Strikers, which won five of its last six games to make it to the finals of the Big Bash League 2021-22 and continued that run with a win in the Eliminator against Hobart Hurricanes have moved one step and continued their fairy tale run by defeating Sydney Thunder in the Knockout to advance to the Challenger, just one step short of a place in the title decider. The Strikers clinched a thriller at the Melbourne Cricket Ground as they defended 14 runs in the last over even as Thunder had more than five of their wickets intact. Chasing a target of 185, the Sydney team tried its best to get as close as possible even as it lost two of its best batters in Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja in the first seven overs itself. But not losing the plot, Jason Sangha and Alex Ross continued to follow the target at a good rate and reached within the striking distance with a 90 run stand for the third wicket. With 39 required from 23 balls, it was 60-40 in favour of the Thunder when Sangha was dismissed by skipper and Strikers legend Peter Sidlle. That wicket of Sangha became the turning point in the game as just after that wicket, the newcomer Sams too was removed and the Thunder needed 35 from the last two overs, still very much gettable. However, the 19th over totally shifted the momentum in Strikers’ favours as even in the 18th, 12 runs came and 23 was needed from the last two. In the 19th over, Siddle gave away only nine runs and forced Thunder to get 14 from the last. The last over was bowled brilliantly by Harry Conway who even after going for four on the second ball, bowled three dot deliveries on a trot, two of which also fetched him crucial wickets of Ross and Ben Cutting, the two men entrusted with the duties to win the game for their team. Earlier in the evening, after winning the toss and deciding to bat first, the Strikers got off to a flyer, hitting 40 runs in the first four overs only. Even as Alex Carey got out, Matthew Short, the other opener continued his attacking play and added 50 in 37 balls with Ian Cockbain before getting out for 39. Though Short got out, Cockbain continued his onslaught and it was his innings of 65 off 38 balls that propelled the Strikers to reach 184-6 in their 20 overs. The Strikers would now face yet another team from Sydney as they play the Sixers in the Challenger on January 26, which will determine the team that will face Perth Scorchers in the final on January 28.
BBL 2021-22: Adelaide Strikers register Knockout berth, beat Hobart Hurricanes in Eliminator
Adelaide Strikers made a place for themselves in the knockout of the BBL 2021-22 after beating Hobart Hurricanes in the Eliminator match by 22 runs in Melbourne on Friday. The Strikers rode on a riveting bowling performance especially from Peter Siddle who bagged four wickets for 32 runs in 3.4 overs as the Hurricanes were bundled out for 166 while chasing 189 in 20 overs. The Hobart side didn't really have a great start to the proceedings and they lost wickets at regular intervals to get reduced to 67/3 in the 10th over. But D Arcy Short then took the onus on himself and held the fort at one end as he notched up a 34-ball 56. But Short's departure pushed the Hurricanes on the back foot once again as they lost wickets at regular intervals to eventually get bowled out. Earlier, in the day, openers Alex Carey and Matthew Short provided the side with a brilliant stand of 145 runs for the first wicket. While Carey scored 67 in 45 balls, Short smashed 89 in 48 deliveries. But Adelaide then lost a few wickets after the departure of both the openers and were restricted to 188/6 in 20 overs.
BBL 2021-22: Siddle, Short anchor Adelaide Strikers to dominating win over Hobart Hurricanes
Adelaide Strikers thumped Hobart Hurricanes by 7 wickets in Adelaide on Wednesday after chasing down a target of 127 runs in the 16th over. The Strikers rode on an emphatic batting display from opener Matthew Short who struck 72 off 44 deliveries which included five maximums and four fours. The Adelaide openers Short and Henry Hunt put up 38 runs for the first wicket before Hunt was sent back for 18 off 14. Short was then joined by Matt Renshaw and the two batters then stitched a partnership of 68 runs for the second. But Renshaw was undone for 19 off 21 by Sandeep Lamichhane. The Adelaide team then lost the wicket of Jonathan Wells after a 19-run partnership between him and Short but that didn’t really affect the side’s runs chase as they went over the line quite comfortably. Lamichhane picked up a couple of wickets for 22 runs in 4 overs for his team. Earlier, in the day, the Hobart Hurricanes were off to a struggling start as they lost wickets at regular intervals and were left tottering at 88/5 before getting bundled out for 126 in the final over. Captain Peter Siddle was the pick of the bowlers for his side after he returned with a fifer at the cost of just 23 runs in 3.5 overs. Short talked about his knock after the match and how he stitched the innings. “I just kept things simple. Seeing the ball and just trying to hit them clean. The go-to shot that I have is coming off well for them. Trying to use my height and leverage to my advantage. We just played our natural game and it was nice to put pressure on their bowlers. Siddle has been bowling really well in the last few games, credit to him,” he said after the match.
New BBL rule to allow bowlers free hit at stumps, Siddle dreads becoming 1st bowler to miss
Although in force since the start of the Women’s Big Bash League, but the new rule which allows bowlers a free hit at the stumps if the batter doesn't make to the crease in the 75 seconds time limit from the dismissal or removal (by retirement) of the last batter at the strike, might have been used in the very first game of the BBL 11. Melbourne Stars’ Syed Faridoun had to sprint his way to the wicket at number 11 and he just beat the clock by a few seconds otherwise the Sydney Sixers bowler Steve O'Keefe would have been given a free shot at the stumps. "We all know how much batters love having a hit and not missing out, so I can't imagine there'd be too many guys taking it slow this season,” he added. According to the rule At the fall of a wicket or retirement of a batter, the incoming batter must be ready to face the next delivery within 75 seconds. If the batter fails to arrive in time, then they must stand to the side of the pitch for the first delivery of their innings and allow the bowler a free ball at the stumps. If the ball strikes the wicket the batter is out bowled. If the ball misses the wicket it is counted as a dot ball and a ball faced. If the bowler delivers a no-ball, the next delivery is a free hit. And if the new batter is the non-striker (the batters crossed while the ball was in the air, the wicket fell at the end of the over or there was a run out at the bowler's end), then the same process is followed when they get on strike to face their first delivery.
